Apple's video streaming service could launch by the end of April

Citing sources familiar with the matter, it’s revealed that Apple recently began contacting partnering entertainment companies “whose offerings will be available through the service” requesting that all content be finished and ready for streaming by mid-April.

The service will reportedly roll out formally “within several weeks” of this date as part of a big update to Apple’s TV app, which comes pre-installed on iPhone, iPad and Apple TV devices. Owners of these should be able to access some of Apple’s original content, which will include a number of original TV shows and movies, for free. The rest will be available as an optional subscription.

According to the report, other video services will be available to users under a subscription model too. At the moment, though, it’s unclear if the likes of Netflix and HBO will be supported.

Over the years, Apple has continued to invest into its own original content with the production of over two dozen TV shows and multiple movies. In recent times, the Cupertino giant has also hired a number of well-known producers for future content.

Going by today’s report, it seems as though Apple’s original content service and updated TV app will launch together towards the end of April. If this is indeed the case, the company could unveil its plans in late March at its annual Spring event. At this event, Apple may also announce an updated iPad, a new iPad Mini, next-gen AirPods, the AirPower’s launch and a 7th-gen iPod Touch.
