Apple's 1-year warranty practice found "unacceptable" in the EU

0. phoneArena posted on 01 Oct 2012, 09:14

Oops, it looks like EU officials don't really like the game Apple's playing with its warranty messages. The company has been advertising and selling its products with only 1-year warranty, when the laws in the EU provision a mandatory 2-year warranty for such goods...

No. Ive said that Apple focuses on product, not profit.
You can see that you have to pay "just" $29 for lightning adapter, and do not have to care about "cheap quality chiness micro USB cable" like other phones. Apple "only" cares about user's experience, like their fancy 5th row, fancy map and fancy build quality.

apple is always breaking rules in EU.. example, the standard micro usb . all smartphone must have micro usb standard connector. but apple charging them £15 / €19 ($25) which should be free because of the rule in EU

Apple should provide 2 years warranty as standard. When you consider how expensive iPhones can be (£550 out of contract) it's the least a consumer deserves for such an expensive purchase.

Apple = iDeceptiVe.

Hooray for the EU! Now they should investigate that little timer that Apple installs on all its' logic boards; you know, the one that, somehow, after the first year (3 if you have Apple MiSCare) is programmed to kill the iDevice, leaving the owner with no other alternative but to go out and buy a brand new replacement.

I believe that this is common practice for every maker.
Well, not exactly after warranty expires, but after a random number of days/months...

Another reason to never ever buy "the iPhone".

Glad they're being investigated. Especially considering how expensive the insurance is for iPhones.

I loathe apple as much as the next intelligent, informed consumer, but come on now. apple care is a good service and the cheapest option for insuring a smart phone. Apple cannot innovate, build, or design a quality product for sh*t, but they do have great customer service.
Let's be fair.

dont know why there is a picture of a cracked screen, you wont get that repaired under the 1 year warranty let alone two! (although apple have been known to be "generous" on occasion)

True, physical/liquid damage and lost/stolen devices don't fall under warranty claims, and in fact can void warranties

And in fact Apple has falsely used liquid damage as an excuse not to repair my iPod Touch. I haven't purchased an Apple product since nor will I buy one in the future.

But now that the iP5 has such an easily repairable screen, you can get an iP5 and be secure in the knowledge that screen damage doesn't require swapping the whole device.

Finally someone is going to bring Apple to court, and for good reason too. These folks at Apple are always trying to stiff the people on something, seriously have you ever seen how many people walk around with a cracked screen on their iphone its a sad sight especially because they know that theyd want it replaced but why shell out the cash especially when the next model is probably out in no time (not that they are actually taking the time to produce an item that is more durable or anything like that)

It's not normal to have 2 years of warranty in the EU? Or the 1 year warranty is only for the iphone? Because i have an Ipad and I got 2 years warranty :S

In the E.U. EVERY consummer product is obliged to come with a 2-year warranty offered by the manufacturer/reseller.

ok, so if someone breaks their screen then the manufacturer should just fix it? I do not believe any company will simply just repair the screen, unless you are going to pay. And, as for liquid damage, lost/stolen - well, you are just s*&t out of luck as the replacement is solely on you, the consumer, nit any manufacturer.

None of those things were mentioned in the article...so, what exactly are you talking about? They just pointed out that apple is selling applecare to people that by law should still be under the warranty.
