Reports that Apple will nix the notch in iPhone 11 are the ultimate copycat irony

Apple is said to nix the notch in future iPhone 11 and XI, or whatever it names next year's crop. If Finisar and other TrueDepth camera sensor suppliers have managed to make the whole setup even smaller, it would explain why Apple may have decided to improve the screen-to-body ratio further, as the current state of its "all-screen" efforts clashes with its minimalist design heritage pretty obviously...

This is a click bait article. Because Apple would not be forcing it's developers to add support for the notch. I still hate any notch. It's more of a gimmick than anything else.

They’re not forcing them to add support for the notch but rather the 18:9 scaling

Wrong! Clearly you never read their developer guidelines. Apple has mandated that by this April. Developers have to embrace and support the iPhone X notch. Plus all apps have to be coded for iOS 11. It's not just the aspects ratio of the display.

Well, it is big compared to other phones. I'll apologize if you can prove that I am wrong.

Samsung will implement the notch , the right way. Nothing wrong with notch if it's hidden like whole, top, black bezel with few icons(by my choice) on it. And If we NEVER see the notch. Apple did it wrong, and fugly, just to brag with ''bigger'' display.

I'm not sure what Apple has to brag about: Samsung S8/S9's screen/body ratio is still higher.

Apple once again copying Samsung because their notch doesn't sell. Funny thing is they need to consult with Samsung to help them eliminate the notch.

I would agree. However I just Sold My Pixel and picked up the iPhone X on Monday. it is nice having a high-end small device with a dual camera. Now I just have dumb down to the device. (not a knock on iOS, but Android is more complex, so I have to get used to simplified approach)

Apple is probably afraid that the slow iPhone X sales are because of the notch, when in fact the real problems are the high price and the lack of fingerprint sensor. Nevertheless, a bezel-free, notchless phone is most welcome. I can't wait for the Android copycats on that :)

I can understand the notch if it contains the necessary hardware peripherals... instead of copying the notch copy that dot projector, flood illuminator, and infared camera

Or just use a fingerprint sensor. Job done.

Given the same time as fingerprint scanner to mature it would be better then FS. It’s just a first iteration give it time bro. First gen FS were also bad and slow.

or just note have a notch and have the top just all black and no screen. those tiny chunks of the screen are useless, my s8 looks great without notches and has a better screen-to-body ratio than the iPhone X still so

i find it hard to believe X has worse SB ratio than S8, i held the two side by side and X has a smaller dimensions. and the two should share same or very similar screen surface area.

Surface area is not the same as screen to body ratio. That match takes a big chunk out of the screen, more area than the S8's complete bezel.

It's not "worse than" which implies they're both bad. The X is just 'not as good'. "The iPhone X has a consistent border around the screen, which arguably makes the bezels seem smaller overall even though the screen-to-body ratio of the iPhone X is slightly lower than the Galaxy S9 — about 82.9% versus 83.5%. That's because of "the notch," as it's affectionately called."

The notch and the side borders are bigger than the S8. Go to the store and take a look again.

Larger Screen and NO bezels on the side. The side Bezels on the x are pretty thick. However, I'm finding that I like my X better than I anticipated (could be the honeymoon phase, I've only had it for 2-days)

Every second article on phonearena these days is talking about a fecking notch.

And in 2019 it still comes with a notch, because they couldn't figure it out. They can't even figure out a decent way of keeping their SoCs from killing the batteries after a year of use, I fear they lack the intelligence to pull this off.

Would 2019 make it the iPhone 12 as we'd expect the iPhone 11 this september in 2018?

Nice to ce Apple Performance under pressure, first time in 10 years. I think she will bring more innovation in years to come.

Boy, the notch has really turned into quite a social experiment, hasn't it? An ugly design choice, driven by the technical demands of the iPhone, has now turned into a status symbol that some Android manufacturers now feel compelled to emulate. Pathetic. Thank goodness Samsung didn't take the bait.

The irony is that copycats will be just fine but the iphone fanboys that bought the beta phone with an inferior design and payed +1000$ for it will be in an interesting position.

It's better to pay 1000$ for a "beta" phone than for a phone that explodes. Now that's what I call beta. Plus, the notch isn't ugly at all, it just became a trend on social media to hate on it, among unhappy android users. If it was that ugly, nobody would copy it.
