Apple iPhone turns 6 today

Six years ago today, long lines and plenty of media attention greeted the Apple iPhone as it was launched; the original generation of the device carried specs that certainly wouldn't live up to today's models. The 3.5 inch screen offered resolution of 320 x 480, and a pixel density of 165ppi, a far cry from today's Retina display...

Except for being thinner, lighter, faster. It's like it's exactly the same, except not.

Happy Birthday. I'm glad the OG iphone innovated the way it did otherwise we wouldn't have these great devises! But that was the past and i am glad to own a Samsung Galaxy Note 2!

The phone that started it all! Also the reason why sites like PA have become prominent. Legendary indeed. Happy Bday iPhone!

If there was no iPhone then there would be no android as it is today, it might exist but probably quite different one than what we have now

The original iPhone was innovative. I think that a lot of us, 100% devoted Android followers will agree on that. The 3G innovated with the app store, and the 4 innovated with the retina display. Any other Apple product (Siri included as it was purchased by Apple) is just recycling. Over and over and over again. Well perhaps excluding the macbook with retina display, but that's a different thing altogether. Back in the day Apple used to take elements\technologies which existed but were rarely used in other products, integrate them into their products and then claim innovation. This was borderline bearable as these technologies\elements weren't really used much back then. Now, however, Apple shamelessly rips off huge chunks of *widely known* and *widely used* elements\pieces of tech, and claims it to be innovation as well. Not to mention suing everyone who used them *originally*. *That* is BS. And sooner or later even the most devoted hipster Apple fan will realize that. Make no mistake. Apple is in free-fall and no amount of neon on the iOS7 icons will change that.

I do agree that iPhone was ahead of it's time back in 2007 but today Android is way ahead. The only saving grace is that Apple has great designs but Android is just too much for them. Google has done a great job with the OS and you have so many hardware choices to fit your style. Don't like the plastic on the S4; get a HTC One. Want a Google experience phone; get a Nexus. What a phablet; get a Note device. What a smaller device; look at the upcoming HTC One mini or mini S4. And the choices will just keep increasing. To tell you the truth if Apple was aggressive in releasing more models with various screen sizes I would be using Apple products. But iOS is not built that way to accept multiple screen sizes without redesigning Apps; that's their huge flaw.

Apple's goal was never to make the most original phone, it was to make the best phone, and of course that's subjective, but if they're trying to make the best phone possible they're going to use any feature they can, including unpatented software features that they're completely within their right to use. As a consumer, why should I care about what's the newest? I just want what's best. That's why your claim is BS, there aren't as many of those devoted hipster Apple fans as you think they are. If there were they would have jumped ship a long time ago. But instead Apple's sales have continued to grow, and are still growing, despite the last several iOS versions having a lot of catch up features. If you think that's being in free-fall then you are delusional.

And Steve was always wrong..... 3.5'' is just the perfect size? Nobody wants a Stylus? LOL I just laugh at those people who are screaming like they've seen Jesus right before their very eyes everytime Steve takes the center stage

Happy Birthday to the original IPhone, a true gem at the time when the Nokia N95 8GB was its main rival, it was ahead of its time back then no doubt and left others truly behind despite missing several key features with no app store. The Jesus Phone it was back then with the largest screen and the closest competitor being the N95 and LG Chocolate, now no longer carrying either title. Proof that today's competition is a different and more dangerous animal of which now almost every phone is a Jesus Phone and the IPhone is just another phone!

The only iPhone I liked was iPhone 4. But because it came to Verizon super late it made absolutely no sense to get one. And then Android all of a sudden surpassed Apple in the OS department and the thought of owning a 4S and iPhone 5" became a distant memory. If Apple released the iPhone on all carriers at the same time in the beginning I would have been a Steve Jobs biotch .

IPhone has alwaysvbeen behind the curve. No 3g, then no HSPA + on the 4s, then no Google maps and quality control on the iPhone 5. Sad really how much crap they get away from the media and critiques really. Those things would mean the end to Sony or any other non Apple manufacturer. Not to mention the ridiculous pricing. Lol

If you've ever used an iPhone 4S on AT&T and even now on T-Mobile, you'd know how fast the data speeds are on the phone. So your theory of it not having HSPA+ is invalid.

a far cry from today's Retina display IT IS NOT A RETINA DISPLAY a inch is a inch no matter if ur eyes are a foot away or eye at the glass and retina display is proven to be 470/480ppi PER INCH not a foot away A lot of features were left out of that first model, including 3G connectivity, GPS, MMS and a flash for the camera. Speaking of the camera, that early snapper did not have autofocus coz it was rushed to market to beat android and to say android copied us where in reality ios copied android and no im not wishing thieves a happy birthday

I have an iphone5 and a S3 currently on Verizon. Both work great. Would love to see how they would work on AT&T, but poor reception.
