Samsung still had the 5th best selling phone according to them and also had another S7 in the top10, they are selling high end devices, not as much as Apple but still more than anyone else out there.

And I honestly think being king of Android, in which there are so many fierce competitors in the race, is a bigger feat/achievement than being king of iOS, in which a single person is running the race alone. If you're alone in a race, you'll always finish first, regardless of however slow you may run.

stupid analogy. Apple is competing against Samsung and other manufacturers for customers just as Samsung and other manufacturers compete against apple... The difference is, Google gave all manufacturers a free car to modify, and race with... apple was not a freeloader and instead made their own car - and no matter what Samsung and others do to their free android "car" - apple is winning races left and right with their own design!!! how is that for analogy... Your analogy will only work if those that are looking to buy a device had no choice but apple - reality though kicks in, and you realize that when it comes to buying a new phone - EVERY CONSUMER has a choice to walk into any store, any carrier and buy ANY device - they choose either iPhone 7 or Samsung S7 and guess what, more choose iPhone 7 over Samsung S7 - that is a fact!

According to your logic, Blackberry should also be on the top of the list too because they were also (quoting your lines) "a single person running the race alone." but they failed. So your point is invalid. The truth is Apple knows how to do business any people love their products.

"The other spots in the top 10 are mainly occupied by Samsung. The best selling South Korean model is the Galaxy S7 edge which sits on number 5 with about 25 million units shipped. The smaller S7 version is placed at number 9, while Oppo's A53, a popular device in China and India, is the only non-Apple or Samsung handset that is present on the chart." What does one call a duopoly (Android and iOS) inside another duopoly (Apple and Samsung)?

Im more interested in units sold not in units shipped.

Doesn't the S7/edge typically sell in larger numbers than the Note? If so, even if you added typical sales of the Note, it still wouldn't be close. This just proves from a flagship point that Apple is killing it. It's only when you add in the cheap Sammy devices that their numbers(market share) look great compared to Apple.

Also, let's not forget that the iPhone SE is not on the list.

Its was number one selling phone until the 7 dropped, not sure why its not on this list.

it was #1 selling because that was part of the year that Apple is slow with sales - most are waiting for new device in September instead, and Samsung had their debut.. Once an new iPhone is announced it crushes any device sold for that year in just months or even weeks... for the past 10 years it's been a predictable cycle and works like clockwork... Not putting down what you said... just my observations... basically what Samsung sold before iPhone 7 debut wasn't enough to take the spot for 2016...

The point is dumb, because you only want to count all the pbone Apple.sells, bit you dont want to count all the phone Samsung sells. Thats where you guys show bias. Apple chose to sell one phome per year. Almost no one else does. Just because Apple sells a single modwl doesn't make if fair to compare only single models sells. But it doesn't matter. The fact is Apple did nkt sell the most handsets in 2016. They sold 215M of all available selling models and Samsung sold 320M all all available selling models. The rest just doesnt matter...i donr care what modela you want to hit or miss.

I don't think it makes Samsung look good when they have to release 20 phones to sell as much as Apples 2 or 3

145. AlikMalix unregistered

Techie it's a stupid argument. Basically what you're saying is that if a person has money to spend on a flagship device - they would more likely buy an iPhone than s7/edge/note. and that the only way Samsung accumulates their market share is with a huge help of their cheap models.

"and that the only way Samsung accumulates their market share is with a huge help of their cheap models." That's because the majority of consumers can't afford flagships, so Samsung produces devices for each segment so as to carter to the purchase ability all of it's buyers. That doesn't downgrade the significance of Samsung' s market share.

160. AlikMalix unregistered

Absolutely nothing wrong with any of your points... totally agree. I didn't meant to sound that it downgrades Samsung market share - just stating that it helps build Samsung's marketshare. AND I cannot disagree with any of your points... Apple does not care to cater to that market - even if they release in 3rd world countries - they aim for high dollar (or official currency) in that country as well. My argument was that from those that have the money to spend on a flagship - spend it on an iPhone more than Samsung - that says something...

This is quite impressive. I imagine the S-sheeps will come chiming in about how in total, Samsung devices sold more...but we're talking about single device sales here, not multiple device sales combined. Nearly 60 million of a single device sold is quite the feat. Congrats, Apple. Also, it's great to see two of my favorite companies absolutely killing it when it comes to smartphone sales. Samsung and Apple are fantastic companies that produce fantastic, solid devices. They deserve it 100%.

Galaxy phones are a single device, made up of several models. Apple iPhone sales for the year are also made up of many models. I fail to see any difference? That is not what his title says. His claim was, Appel sold more handsets in 2016. The facts say they did not. Samsung did. As far as your Samsung fans will chime in because Samsung sold more phones. Its because they sold more phones. iPhone is made up of all selling models, which all came out in different years based on his graphic. Apple released one phone in 2016. Also the S7 and S7 are not 2 phones, they are one phone in to styles. Just like the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus are the same phone in 2 styles. There is no pint in separating them. Galaxy - One phone multiple models. iPhone, one phone multiple models. I don't see any difference here. YOU and the ,lame duck writer are trying to make a distinction that doesn't exist. TYPICAL APPLE FANBOYS HATE LOSING!

I said Samsung sheep will chime in...not Samsung fans. And I was right! Here you are, right on cue. "Galaxy, One phone multiple models, iPhone, one phone multiple models" The entire point of this article is to show the sales of those MULTIPLE models, not just all sales combined. This isn't that hard of a concept to grasp, but yet here you are reaching away at all straws. Also, how cute of you to resort to calling me an Apple fanboy, despite my very much obvious preference for Samsung. ;) But hey...that's how ya'll work. Any slight negativity towards one company and you're automatically a sheep for the other. Doesn't really bother me though...because at the end of the day, I can sleep well knowing I don't shit my pants with rage whenever someone even remotely says something negative about Samsung.

II'm not a Samsung sheep. I dont care about sales. I only care about numbers being cprrect. When you post an article saying one thing, you dont get to discredit that article because another article says different. We have "oficial" numbers from DJ Koh where he stated, Samsung sold because of the Note 7 issue, 57M S7's in 2016. Before the Note 7 issue, they had already sold 40M S7's. The Note 7 issue lead to more sales as the S7 especially the edge replaced 90% of the recalled Note 7. I am not counting any 2017 sales. The above article states Samsung only sold 34M S7's and it wrong. That is the only thing I point out. I don't care who sells the most and I didnt claim Samsung sold more phones on any single model. I simply stated PA is unfair comparing numbers that are officially wrong. I care about fairness an accuracy. I know people like you could care less. Sales numbers don't affect my buying. I dont care who loses or wins. I dont care about numbers unless they are inaccurate. I pointed out that the article is claiming Samsung only sold 34M S7's and its wrong. They sold 57M as of Q4 2016. Which PA already reported just a few days ago.

Lmao. The literal f**king title: Apple iPhones were the best selling handsets for 2016 Take your illiterate ass back to 3rd grade... "Galaxy phones are a single device, made up of several models" When you head back to class...look up the meaning of "single" for me. I'm sure you understand the relationship aspect/usecase for the word (you know...because you're lonely), but it appears you lack understanding when it comes to numerical value.

Lmao...I expect this level of incompetence from him. Once he told me he graduated Valedictorian from his highschool with a 3.0 GPA. All I could do was laugh. That has to be the s**ttiest highschool in existence if the student who graduated top of the class had that low a GPA. Either that are he was lying his ass off again. In either case, I can't help but feel sorry for him. His Note is his life...and Samsung is a father to him. It must be devastating to see that his illusionary projections didn't come to pass. I genuinely feel a little sorry for him. Or at least I did, until he called me a douche, then I went right back to ridiculing him.
