Apple files patent applications related to using the Digital Crown on the iPhone and iPad

The Digital Crown is the innovative tool that Apple created so that Apple Watch users could zoom in and out on the watch screen in place of the multi-touch "pinch and zoom." The latter obviously was not a workable solution for users of the timepiece. Zooming all the way in will launch the app. Pressing the crown after launching an app will take you back to the home screen...

Yep. 100% on the money. Apple are doomed. zero thought, zero innovation, zero ideas of their own anymore. They have become the patent troll of the universe.

@tedkord you're right. This is Apple's strategy to fool everyone so that people will believe Apple invented such. BTW, I have to disagree with your "if Steve Jobs were still alive". I'm tired hearing those words.

They might be teaming up with blackberry to make another phone.

They've gone full retard now. Honestly, it's debatable on the watch, but down right stupid on tablets. It's just Jony I've and his addiction with putting wheels on everything. That's probably why they wanted to make a car in the first place. Now he's going to put a dial on iPads and iPhones too.

While I am among those screaming WHY,and doing it with a LOUD VOICE, I do believe that when it is executed it will be done in a way that adds functionality and it will be implemented well... Though I suppose it will solve a problem that NO PERSON is truly concerned about. It could be a ploy to lock of the technology so that others don't use "their" digital crown before they find a real use.

Well without Steve Jobs, they seem to be following his "innovate, make people realise they needed something" strategy just a little......sideways. Creating situations that.....simply aren't a solution to a problem that exist.

We're thinking in the same path. I call it "their" digital crown...But yes the rest of world has known this as a jog dial since way back. Hello Blackberry and a ton other PDA and Windows phones from back in the day. Whoops. Apple invented this tech

Watch crowns have been around for over a century. How is Apple using it "innovative"?

Nobody is following the stupid digital crown, especially now that Samsung had demonstrated a better way with the rotating bezel.

Pathetic patent troll. How is that Apple can base their patents on a digital crown that has been around for decades.

So I looked at the application. So Apple wants to use the dial to manipulate objects on the display. But aren't we doing this already with our fingers? So what can this dial do, that finders can't do already? Also, my does that second photo look so much like a jacked up Etch-A-Sketch?! Sales of the iPhone are dropping. The best Apple could come up with was rushing half-baked force touch, which was basically still in beta. The iPad sales are falling and the best they could do, was make it bigger. With the 9.7" model, all they did was add to speakers and raised the cost $100 but didn't add anything. Mac sales have never been good. The best they could do is sell X86 hardware, at almost double the cost of a Windows PC with the exact same features. I just bought a 2017 Envy for $1600. Apple's base MacBook Pro starts at $1999. Yet its specs were LESS than what my Envy had. I would have to buy the $2399 model to get most of the same things. Yet I have more port options. optical drive, 4K display and 32GB of DDR4 RAM and a better speaker system and free software and for far less...$800 less! Apple is stupid now. They make good products, but the cost for what you get is insane. I refuse to pay $650 for a $400 phone. Apple lost there way years ago. They kissed MS' @$$ to stay relevant, they got lucky with the iPod, to get people to run out an buy a music player, that did less than other music players on the market already from names like Sony and Creative. They got suckers to buy the iPhone t, from day one it did less than what other phones were already doing. Explain how Apple makes a new Mac, yet, leaves off every USB port in the world and you can't even charge up your latest model phone, without buying some stupid cable? The best thing they could do for the iPhone was take a button that had no issue and make it no move, because it is cheaper than sealing it up against water and same for the headphone jack. Plus making fools run out an pay $160 for wireless headphone that sound as weak as the inbox ones. Apple is smart enough to get fools to buy their gimped BS. Some smart people buy them too. For the most part, Apple sells products to suckers!

I've found that autocorrect causes more misspellings than it fixes.

I do not think anybody wants to copy it ... If I had to copy someone it would be Samsung S2/3 but then... with a touch sensitive bezel It is my patent do not copy it :).

Looked at the Apple Watch at Best Buy. Might be the best selling smart watch but really all I need is the time and date. My cheap Casio will last 5 years on a charge. Guess that's pretty good? You think?
