Apple asks for a ban on Samsung's Galaxy line in Japan, seeks $1.3 million in damages

i agree on that. Touchwiz DOES look like iOS a bit, but that's why i use CM7 :) oh and the HAVE gone after HTC and MOTOROLA, so there goes your theory, apple is just suing because they don't have anything better to battle the androids with

That's why I said "more agressively". Apple went after piddly interface patents like the proximity sensor. They didn't seek to BAN phones from the market like they have the Galaxy Tabs in Europe. I think one claim of Apple fans - the fragmentation, the constant one-upmanship of Android vendors - is going to come back around to bite Apple. They have to make the iPhone 5 compete not just with the SGS2, but with the next wave of Android phones as well. The market is changing, and that's fueling the lawsuit panic.

lol OH YES THEY DID WANT TO BAN THE GALAXY LINE, it's the headline of the article :) second, it can all be fixed with a simple S/W update :) all i can hope is that all iPhone fans see the light.. and not the flash on their iPhones.. where you have to pay for using your LED flash as a torchlight ;)

I know they want to ban the Galaxy line, I'm saying that's waaaaaaay more than they tried to do with their piddly patent war against HTC et al last year. Part of this is just a PR war, and it's a lot easier to say "We would like to bar all Samsung Galaxy Tabs from the European market" than "We would like to bar the following 118 Android phones from being sold by the following 7 manufacturers". iPhone fans aren't going to abandon the product, because it still serves their needs. What remains to be seen is how the PR war shakes out... will this tarnish Apple's reputation and make them seem petty? Will Samsung get sympathy points?

I get people complaining all day because of the hassel with Android. People wont buy the Xoom or Android phones because they have to be kept up constantly. And without it, they die as fast as you take it out of your pocket. iPhone and WP7 are great alternatives.

theres a patent for that.

This is sad but I think this has more to do with Samsung refusing to supply the screen for the iPhone than Apple being scared because they have a following that will buy anything with an Apple on it no matter how DUMB of a "smartphone" it is.!

At this point, government needs to step in on this, and start punishing Apple for every frivolous lawsuit they file. The ITC needs to step in and come down on them for their monopolistic practices. As a side note, I find it funny that in 1996, Steve Jobs said in an interview, "We have always been shameless about stealing great ideas." Then, when the first HTC lawsuit was filed, he said, "We can sit by and watch our competitors steal our patented inventions, or we can do something about it. We decided to do something about it. We think competition is healthy, but competitors should create their own original technology, not steal ours." Are you effin kidding me? So, it's perfectly fine when you go over and steal code and systems for your products, but the second a company releases something that does kind of the same thing your product does, they stole your intellectual property? Get off your high horse and realize your moment in the sun is over. Your stupid little sheep are still going to buy your lackluster products regardless anything else out. If you release the iPhone 5 next month and decide in November to release the iPhone 6, and the only change is the camera is on the opposite side of the backplate, these morons are still going to buy them in the millions. Stop crying and let Samsung have their niche. More importantly, stop going after hardware manufacturers. Let's go after big daddy Google. Oh, wait, I forgot, they write a lot of code for your apps. You wouldn't want to bite the hand that feeds do you? On second thought, nevermind, you already did with Samsung. I hope they pull production on your precious processors.

I love that you notice this, i thought i was the only one, when i argue with people about this i tell them to watch silicone valley, apple built themselves by stealing the competitions ideas, so how can they sit here and sue everyone for "stealing thier ideas" it shocks all the little isheep when i tell them this, because they honestly think they were the first, no sorry, bill gates and co were established long before jobs and his cronies, the problem is, billy wasnt even original, he robbed ibm, what isheep need to realize is that if apple is allowed to sue whenever something better than thiers comes out, there will not be any advancement....they may be happy this the crap they are fed every two years or so, but the rest of us enjoy progress

Ya know something just hit me like a brick. The Galaxy S2 looks more like the iDiotPhone 3 than the 4. Maybe this is the biggest spoiler of them all. Spoiled by Apple themselves the iDiotPhone5 will have an old school look to it's design.

You break a patent, you pay for it. Simple as that. And for a company to make that much, and not pay, it caught them in the long run. Should've done it like Microsoft and went from the ground up. :)

Yeah, but with Apple is it really coming from a drive to protect their IP, or is it just greed? They act like they own the very concept of a tablet. The Galaxy Tab copies the iPod just as much as a Commodore 128 copied the Apple II, but did Apple sue then? Did they sue to keep MS from marketing Windows 95? Apple has been raking in astronomical profits from the iPhone and now the iPad, but Android successfully challenged the iPhone and now threatens their iPad windfall. I think they have a credible complaint against the Galaxy SII and Touchwiz, but their claim to the entire tablet space reeks of arrogance.

Well if we didn't have the iPhone, we wouldn't have Android. So people need to stop ripping on that, because that's just dumb. It's all from the same source. Anyways, Android took an idea from Apple, and it caught up to them. I mean, its really that simple. If someone stole one of my ideas, I'd be on their ass like white on rice no matter what it took. And I do realize Apple kind of took the idea of the drop down notification, but they added to it. You can have stocks, weather, even write notes (Cydia). So I don't think they technically took all of it. But I think this will keep going on until everything is overdone and both companies realize it. It is an OS war, and will always be an OS war. No matter what level of degree, it will be between Android, Apple, and WP7 (depending on how far they go). And people bitching about Apple, HTC is now suing Apple. So there is no more "Apple did that, Android did that." Its going way out of proportion and PhoneArena is funding it.

you forget that apple was built on stolen ideas...just ask bill gates......i have no respect for apple when they cry wolf...because the only reason that company even EXISTS is because jobs ripped off gates...plain and simple

Just imagine if this was the softdrink industry. Coke suing Pepsi for a similar looking product then going after RC and then the generics. The bottles look different but the insides are essentially the same. Doesn't matter if it tastes different or smells different, but it looks similar... So what did they all do instead? They actually stand behind their products and push out sweet slogans and market the hell out of their respectable brands. People will ultimately choose what they like. That's why there are return policies. (Erm, on phones that is..) Maybe this is just Apple's new take on marketing, lord knows that they are getting all sorts of free advertising from all the coverage of the suits.

I bet you'd feel different if it was your company and someone was using your idea to make money at your expense

It's called competition. Everyone vying for a spot in the limelight. Companies don't choose their customers, customers choose the companies. You just have to keep coming out with bigger and better, more appealing, products. Now, if something is EXACTLY the same as your product but undercutting your profits then I can see law suits forthcoming. But in the end it is as they say, imitation is the best form of flattery. But just looking like something doesn't mean it works the same. If someone makes a similar product to what you have that works better, it is your own decision to sue rather than make your product even better. Who wins in that case?

Why fandroids are you okay on yesterday's article with HTC suing Apple, but it's not okay the other way around? Why are you all not outraged that Microsoft sued HTC and is making a fortune on their android phones? You're all hypocrites. You hate everything Apple regardless of what Apple does.

why do u have the same arguements no matter how many times they are shot down as invalid?? do you ever listen or learn? lol Apple is suing samsung for being "similar" with icon design, which isnt an actual crime.. but they are trying to make it one. Apple is being sued for patent infringement in pretty much every case against Apple.. that IS an actual crime. That is the difference. That and when you sue the world over n over again with no validity its only expected that the world comes back at you to teach you a lesson.

What about Apple suing HTC over patent infringiment? You're not okay with that either. That is over a patent Apple owns. Also you're okay with android using pinch to zoom which Apple has a patent on, but you're not okay with Apple having the pull down notification like androids.

Yes I do have something to add. The only thing Apple has won so far are injunctions against the sale of devices pending a decision by the courts. As for some of the other lawsuits Apple has filed winning 2 of 10 doesn't really constitute a great winning percentage. If Apple wanted to be paid for Samsung or HTC use of it's 'so called' (not proven yet) IP then ok get your money they continue in business andeveryone goes back to playing nice I'm cool with that. Trying to stop your competition from putting a competitive product on the market not cool. That's what I'm saying.

I actually agree with him. Your comments over Apple is beyond immature. Calling people names over a phone or tablet is showing how much of an adult you are. HTC is suing Apple, and Apple is suing Android manufacturers. Nobody is innocent in this court bulls**t. You buy a Nokia if you want to be proud of your device or a flip phone from an Asian market to not be involved. Who gives a rats ass. Its all about the product anyways.

Pot, meet kettle. Apple fanboys disparage everything Android, even when something comes out that's a real quality product. Everyone's just pumping up their pet phone/company/software so they feel better about their $200 purchase. I'm trying to look at this impartially. Maybe Apple has a legit complaint against Samsung. Maybe HTC has a legit complaint against Apple. That's for the lawyers to decide, not the fanboys. But talking about it here is like dealing with the US Congress. Nobody wants to have a real discussion, they just want their party to win.

Dear Apple, Please quit to whole I invent the f*cking world and need to eliminate the competition type of thing because honestly, if I lived in Japan, I would boycott Apple. What I fear the most is that I heard Apple is going to make TV's. The world is F*CKED.
