Apple announces that it will unveil the 2018 iPhone models and more on September 12th

Back on August 2nd, we predicted that Wednesday, September 12th would be the most likely date for the unwrapping of the 2018 iPhone models. This morning, Apple made it official by sending out invitations to the media. The festivities get underway on that date at 10am PDT (1pm EDT) from the Steve Jobs Theater on Apple's Cupertino campus.

Apple is expected to introduce three new iOS powered handsets. One, a 5.8-inch model, is considered the sequel to the iPhone X. A monster-sized 6.5-inch "Plus" model is also said to make an appearance, along with the 6.1-inch "affordable" unit. The latter will sport an LCD screen and a single camera on back, while the first two devices should carry OLED panels and a dual-camera setup on the rear. All three handsets will be equipped with the TrueDepth Camera, and use Face ID to verify the identity of the user.

Earlier reports suggested that at the event we could see two new Apple iPad Pro tablets introduced. One model could come with a 12.9-inch display, and the other will sport close to an 11-inch screen. Both slates will reportedly use gesture controls for navigation, include the TrueDepth Camera, and feature Face ID. In addition, on September 12th Apple could also show off a larger sized edge-to-edge display on the next generation of the Apple Watch.

Unlike previous years when Apple fans watched the event live-streaming via Apple's website, there is talk that this year's new product announcements will be streamed over Twitter. And for those who scrutinize Apple's invitations for clues about the upcoming devices, the invites this year feature a round circle with the words "Gather Round" underneath. No, this has nothing to do with a new round dial for the Apple Watch. The image relates to the circular design of the Steve Jobs Theater, where the event will be held.
