Apple Watch Series 3 requires an iPhone 6 or later for setup; battery gets 1 hour of talk time

0. phoneArena posted on 13 Sep 2017, 12:39

Apple announced yesterday that unlike previous versions of the Apple Watch, the new Series 3 model does not need to be paired to a nearby iPhone for internet access, or to make/take phone calls. But it still requires an iPhone to configure the timepiece. And while the Series 1 Apple Watch can still use the Apple iPhone 5s and up to communicate with and to set up the device, the new Series 3 watch requires an Apple iPhone 6 or higher...

Can you use an iPad instead?

This is where the Gear S3 shines and I will continue to use it over the apple watch any day. I connect to LTE with it and it last a whole 2 days with taking calls and sending texts...

I don't think I was clear about my question. It says here that you need iPhone 6 or newer device to set up the new A-Watch LTE. Can I use my new iPad if my iPhone is older?

PS I don't have either one - just hypothetical question.

Which watch face are you using that you are getting 2 days out of your S3? I have a S3 and the battery lasts a day on LTE and that isn't talking on it too much. Really like my S3 but wish the battery lasted a bit longer on LTE. I am pushing it to get a full day on LTE. Still getting more then a hour of talk time on lte though. Wonder how long the apple watch can stream apple music if you only get 1 hour talk time...

18 hours?? Like.. only on lte or..?? I cannot believe they released a 3rd. generation watch which doesn't last 1 day! Even my old LG, first generation of a smartwatch last 1.5 days on average usage!

maybe it's because you can't do shiit with your LG watch other than occasional notifications and changing watch face.

sure, that's why I said that my old LG. currently I'm enjoying 2.5 days average while using gps, wifi, bluetooth, always on screen, notifications, day and night tracking, on my new smartwatch, on a single charge. Obvious, feel free to buy a device which doesn't last a day and is restricted to certain devices!
IMO 18 hours on a average use for a smartwatch released in 2017 it's really poor battery performance.

bs, there is no way your watch can last 2.5 days with all those features turned on.

by the way, Lg watches look like shiit

I did not mention which brand is my newer smartwatch, is not about that. it's about the fact that currently are smartwatches with enough juice for all those things!

the way it looks Lg, sure, the 1st. now looks outdated for some people. I prefer round watches the way it looks is purely subjective. buy whatever you please. The 18 hours on average for 3rd. gen Apple watch is a fact.

I get two full days with those same radios on a year old watch. Anything less than 24 hrs in this years releases is embarrassing.

The Watch lasts a day. LTE TALK TIME lasts an hour.

"Watch will last 18 hours with mixed usage." not sure how long is your day, but mine still has 24 hours! Since nobody really test the battery, based on PA, Apple said it is 18 hours, therefore my comment.

You never sleep?
I try to for at least 6-7h.
I also poo everyday and I use my phone in there; I eat 3-5 times a day, I talk to my friends and family, I work out (no, I'm not listening to music, because I have a lot of friends to talk to at the gym).
I also do other stuff like work, drive, talk to clients, read.

Oh, and I don't have a electronic watch and I won't get one until it will be able to replace my phone.

sure I sleep, I should do it longer maybe. I prefer running therefore listening music while doing that and also running alone, helps me to concentrate on my peace, music and coaching also helps. while running I'm happy to receive my notifications, always good to keep an eye on business.
Enjoy your poo sessions!

Inventing then reinventing smartwatches....

reinventing it to do what? Did you actually read the article?

1 hour of talk time. The Gear S3 gets up to 5 days of talk time or 72 hours.

I don't think anyone is gonna use it for very many calls.

But the point is, Apple is limiting the usage with only 60 mins of talk time before it dies a horrible death.

Wait, so you can make a call that lasts 5 days on one charge?

Cnour doesn't read articles...he just praises Apple-related articles, and trolls articles if they're Android-related.

What is the precise reason for only 1 hours of talk time?

I don't know anyone who would use them to talk on the p[hone, due to privacy issues, in case you don't want others to be in your business because it uses a speaker-phone.

!8 hours sounds like 1.5 days on a single charge, assuming you don;t actually talk on it.

Just note, since PA doesn't give details, if connected to phone and you answer a call, less battery is used because the call is being handled by the phone, and you are only bluetoothing the audio to the speaker.

But when not connected, the watch is using the LTE for data and a modem for the call and that eats battery.

But getting only 60 mins of talk time is lames considering the cost.

Well the series 3 cost $350 so an iPhone 6 minimum isn't abad idea. Why would the smartwatch cost more that the smartphone?

They say the Apple Watch 1 lasts 18 hours.... it gets me 2 days, stop worrying people, they're adding more features for the same battery life.

You must only be using it to tell time. Otherwise there is no way.
