Android will officially support new interface category for foldable phones

Not that it comes as a huge surprise, but after being forced to work around notches, now Google's Android will have to incorporate support for another category that used to be a pipe dream - "Foldables."

Yep, if we needed another confirmation that the bendy phones are coming, Google's VP of engineering Dave Burke just provided it. Google, he said, wil be "enhancing Android to take advantage of this new form factor with as little work as necessary."

Does that mean that there will be no drastic changes in the Android UI brought along by foldable phones. It seems so, at least for now, as Google is just providing developer guidelines how to design for Gumby handsets, rather than a full dev kit with a completely new navigational paradigm.

Samsung and Google are said to have worked in collaboration on making Android work on foldable phones, hence the new category, and the expected deluge of such new phones from Samsung itself, but also eventually from Xiaomi, Huawei and others.
