KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who is known for making accurate calls on Apple, says that every Apple iPhone and Apple iPad released in 2014, will come with Touch ID. That is the fingerprint scanner that is embedded in the home button on the Apple iPhone 5s. According to the analyst, 36 million iPhone 5s units with Touch ID shipped last year.
Touch ID is expected to appear on both the 4.7 inch and 5.5 inch versions of the Apple iPhone 6. Kuo also expects the feature to be on the sequel to the Apple iPad Air and the sequel to the Apple iPad mini with Retina display. The analyst did tell clients that Apple might look to make Touch ID more durable by using tin in the production of the scanner.
The analyst sees 120 million iOS units shipping this year with Touch ID, rising sharply to 233 million units next year. TSMC's foundry is involved in the production of the Touch ID module, which also uses sapphire to prevent the fingerprint scanner from receiving a scratch that could play havoc with its accuracy.
