"AT&T is obviously keeping a watchful eye to make sure their offerings are surely regarded as still fresh. However, the Samsung Focus, HTC Surround, and LG Quantum are starting to show their age, so it’s probably a good idea to finally freshen up their lineup."

If you look at these handsets and the HD7S side by side, there is almost no difference among them except screen size (4.3 for HD7S is the biggest), and some form factor differences. If W7 handsets haven't been selling gangbusters anyways, will an update REALLY make them that much more competitive against Droid, new and (hopefully) improved offerings from RIM and HP, and the still huge selling iPhone? What exactly "freshens" up these handsets? Even if you are a huge W7 fan, why not pick one of the older devices for less money and just install the update yourself, as there is no advantage to the newer, more expensive offering? This is a strange gameplan from Microsoft ......

But what I understand is that Microsoft is very specific on the requirements on these W7 handsets, from UI requirements to physical lay out, even the processor size. Have I got that wrong?

no... they keep the limitations in order to reduce fragmentation... and i believe they will bring out more chassis with mango... and then more with apollo... but it is not their fault more phones have not been produced
