With smartphone diagonals continuing to soar to ever greater heights, we may soon have to calibrate our understanding of what exactly classifies as a phablet, and what sets it apart from a smaller tablet...

don't forget tiny non-removable battery (for its gigantic size)...

The Z Ultra has an amazing display and very good viewing angles because of the Triluminous display. I've held it in real life.

Please do not judge the phablet just by looking at pictures or videos.

The N72 has a higher density display, more than 2X better battery life, instant OTA updates, and at 229$ it will be more than 3X cheaper. Sony as always market their products as premium(which they are) and charges premium. I'm sure the 30% or so faster CPU/GPU are not worth 500$, especially since the N7 CPU is more than adequate. If you are the bragging type I guess you can justify the price, but the average Joe will be happier with a Nexus 7+Nexus 4 combo for, you guessed, less money.

Incorrect on one thing. The Nexus does not have a more dense display.
Z Ultra: 1920x1080 on 6.44" = 342ppi
Nexus: 1920x1200 on 7" = 323ppi

Definitely in the same range, though.

Are you sure about the display and battery? because N72 7” display only have ~323ppi and 3950 mAh VS Z Ultra 6.4” display have ~344ppi
and 3050 mAh.

Powerful(S800), premium feel and look(Metal and durable glass body), thin(6.5mm), lightweight(212 g just compare it with plastic GM 6.3), the ability to use pencil or any pen as a stylus, dust and waterproof(IP58). That’s the reason why Z Ultra have premium price point.

They don't "charge premium" in smartphone.
The prices there are standard. A 2012 flagship will cost $500 no matter who is the manufacturer (as long as it's LG, Samsung, HTC or Sony.\)

The 500$ was the 729$-229$ difference, as this thing will cost 729-749$ unlocked in the US, or 750€ in the EU. I base that on the 20-30% difference in the prices in the available markets, versus the S4. Sony will charge premium as this is a all in one device, and because they are Sony. Sony overcharges on every consumer product they sell, from DSLRs and TVs to headphones and laptop chargers.

Yeah I see that now, the ZUltra does have a 19ppi advantage, however negligible it is still a fact. The 2X battery life is also incorrect, it is more like 50% better(9h vs. 6h video playback) but the point stays.
I agree that the manufacturing cost is higher, and that the materials and probably the build quality is better on the Sony, buy I doubt that it's proportional to the asking price. The Xperia Z is 25€ more expensive than the S4, despite being on the market longer and SE charged more for the Xperia T vs. the S3 a year ago despite it being a mid range speced phone.
The 500$ I mentioned is the

Sorry for the confusion, should've checked my sources twice.

Talk time: Up to 16
Standby time: Up to 820
Music listening time: Up
to 110 hours
Video playback time: Up
to 7 hours
That’s the official number of Xperia ZU battery life (in real life can be better/worst than those numbers) and i also agree on paper N72 is better when it comes to battery life.

Almost all manufacturers is asking premium price point and the problem with “price” is depend where you live, so to make “fair” comparison i’ll use online store like Negri Electronics.

Xperia T is around $335-$400.
S3 is around $400-480.
now i’ll compare mid range phone from Samsung with mid range and high end phone from Sony
S4 Mini $430-$450.
X SP $350-$360.
ZL $480-$560.

there is no doubt that N72 is the best small android tablet, but if you looking for the best premium android phablet ZU is the only option available at least for now.

Its not a phone, nor the phablet/palmtop..and that should be painfully obvious to everyone.
It is simply a mini tablet..Just look at it, doesnt even have a camera flash!

There's greater size disparity between Xperia Z Ultra and the Note 2, than between The Ultra and Nexus 7

im ok with a phone size up to 6.5 if the bezels are really small but im not ok with any bigger because that would replace mini tablets

howly cow.. just less in 12 hours PA update 3-4 news from sony which is old stories..
and just as usual, for sony haters, nexus 7 price cheaper in some countries not all. even all nexus in my country almost have the same price tag with others flagship.

the best thing from nexus 7 is update not price (remember not all part of the world get $300 price).

benchmark? z ultra currently no 1 --- read carefully .. current..
lag? seriously? even my xperia z as smooth as iphone 5 and wp 8 devices.
update? being haters never know that this sony mobile is not the same with 2012 sony. update faster, bug fix faster maybe not the best / fastest with update but it's totally different with their old style. they learn everyday.
stylus? when you can use pencils & pen, there's nothing to fear about lost / broken stylus.
multi task? browsing, notes, watch video while writing your email is easy in z ultra.

for PA, reading how proud PA about G2 snapdragon 800 topics it's clearly PA never like sony "Cool facts about G2 snapdragon 800" well, the z ultra is the first and official and already launch in some country but it's not big news for PA only when others using snapdragon will be worth to release news about it.

ps : from xperia z,iphone 3g & 4, ipad 2, n9, tab 8.9 owner.

damn sexy phone. galaxy note 3 will be popular though because well it's samsung. kind of like the stereotype apple haters always throw on apple's fans, is the same in samsung

Nope, the Note 3 will be popular because it is going to be nowhere near the size of the Galaxy Mega or Nexus 7 but the screen will be close to 6.3. I am guessing 5.9 but the same size as the Note 2. Probably bezels just as small as the G2 so that would ballpark it at the Note 2 size if it has a 5.9 inch screen.

This 6.4 business the Ultra has and 5.9 with boom sound speakers just won't fly. Way too big. the Note 2 is already pushing the niche.

Heck, the G2 is too big for a non phablet.

Nokia, LG, and HTC just don't seem to get it. There are reasons why Samsung is number 1 and it is not only because of the brand. They know their s**t and what people want. And no, people do not want a phone almost the size of a Nexus 7.

And no, they are not willing to go any bigger than the Note 2 just for boom sound(HTC) or they are not willing to have a hump on their phone for a fancier camera(Nokia) they are just going to use for facebook pics.

Samsung just knows the market better. Don't blame it on the brand. It is their smarts that make them popular.

Let's see... a bad quality screen, a phone that's bigger than the Galaxy Mega 6.3, but also has less screen real estate than it (thanks to the Xperia Z Ultra's capacitative buttons), a very small 3,000 mAh battery in that huge ass chassie.

Combine them all together and you get a big failure. I'll take a Nexus 7 over this abomination, if I had to.

Hahaha... you are so cluless about Z Ultra display.
it’s high quality display with wider colour gamut, great viewing angle, and high ppi.

Z Ultra maybe taller and wider than Mega 6.3, but Ultra is thin and lightweight Ultra 6.5mm and 212 g (with full metal and durable glass body) vs Mega 8mm and 199 g (with durable glass and plastic).

and how about battery? with 3050 mAh it seems to small for 6.4” Display. but since Z Ultra uses S800 the first mobile processor with HPM technology i think the battery life will be just fine.

after all the difference between Ultra and Mega, in terms of screen and battery isn’t too far.
Ultra 6.4 and 3050 mAh vs Mega 6.3 and 3200 mAh.

N72 is the best tablet there is no question about it.
Z Ultra is the best premium android phablet and until this day there is no competition yet

Unless your name starts with Greg and ends with Oden, there is no way this "phone" would look natural next to your face. Hope the Bluetooth connectivity is good for the pablet (take out the "h", even closer to a tablet).

If it's almost the same size of my N7, there's no way in hell that's a phone. Say what you want but this definitely passed the mark of being able to place it to your ear and make a call.
