A 4.7 inch Apple iPhone 6 is compared size-wise with a current batch of heavyweight Android models

0. phoneArena posted on 24 Apr 2014, 15:14

With speculation that Apple will be launching one, and possibly two, larger screened iPhone models this year, how would these phones stack up against today's top Andorid handsets? First, some background. Apple is expected to offer a 4.7 inch version of the Apple iPhone 6 with a 16:9 aspect ratio. And while there is a rumor about a 5.5 inch phablet sized iPhone, this device apparently is being delayed to 2015...

Between that and the G2, with the S5 a close third.

There's no way Apple will just make the iPhone 5S bigger to account for the screen. They're going to alter the design in some way. My guess is the bottom bezel will be slightly shortened (can't be that much because of the home button) and the top bezel will be minimized enough so that it looks good and so that it can hold the speaker, sensors, and camera. Apple will do everything it can hardware-wise to maintain the "one handed use."

But as FinalFlash said they're gonna need to make some software tweaks, something they may be reluctant to do right after such a major redesign.

Apple has some patent somewhere that basically makes any arbitrary part of the phone able to identify fingerprints, so no home button is needed for fingerprint recognition anymore. Sapphire is needed to make this possible, which is why the home button on the 5S is coated with sapphire.

As you've likely read, Apple has invested $1B+ in sapphire manufacturing. The reason may not be to replace Gorilla glass per se, but rather, to make fingerprint sensing possible for the whole screen or perhaps just the top and bottom.

You can imagine how well Apple could market a phone that all you have to do is pick it up and it knows it is you.

And it would be very easy for Apple to go to a capacative dynamic home button. They would lose the nice mechanics of a physical button, but they would pick up a lot of UI flexibility and the ability to make a very cool looking phone as the design would be very sleek without the physical home button.

There are tons of very cool designs that Apple (or anyone else) could implement, but don't because they basically have no imagination.

Apple has the patent but not necessarily a working prototype (in fact I'm willing to bet that they don't). And it may take them a while to get that far, I'd count on it not being there in the iPhone 6 for that reason, maybe in a couple years.

That's one ugly, long, big bezel phone... Too skinny, it needs to eat more Apps, lightweight.

Let em hate, apple has a successful formula and should continue to evolve it. Those who hate on apple, won't ever be buying their stuff anyway, so they don't really matter to apples bottom line. I wonder what's the point of attacking every single apple article with the same crap. What's the point, what's their goal other than attention, and green thumbs of course.

Apple knows what it's doing, their success and position prove that. All this hatred, and when apple knocks it out the park, there'll be more hatred. It never stops. Bring on fall, so I can purchase 3, and enjoy mine. The usual haters will post their usual responses. Batter up...

I'm getting the iPhone 6 and Note 4. I could care less what people say. People came up to me and asked how the hell I'm always switching phones and think I'm crazy for doing so. I know how to do business which is why I got my S5 for $100 off contract.

And to reply to your comment from the last Samsung article, yes that's me in the picture. You're not the only one who likes taking selfies lol.

Lol, glad to finally see your face bro. You and I will carry the same phones this fall. Kudos to grabbing an s5 for so little. My wife, and son have already let it be known they want new iPhones. Glad At&t has next now, it'll be cheaper to get em. +1 bro.

Isn't this the truth - always and forever will it be 'this idea sucks, that idea won't work, Apple are doomed, this won't work etc.' Then when the idea takes off and sells millions all over the world we will all be labelled 'the wooly baa-ing animal' again as the rest of the manufacturers follow suit. I lol everytime :)

Those are some huge phones. Motorola and LG have the right idea. As compact as possible with as big a screen as possible.

Since this is the flag ship of Apple it should be compared to the flag ship of HTC (One M8)and Samsung (S5).

lol, you are clueless about phone design. the last thing any design need to do is make wider phones - they are much harder to grip. taller phone instead of wider is always better.

It doesn't matter if apple is late. They will sell sh*t tons anyway. I think the phone looks alright but curved back is the best feature. Apple needs to change the UI quite a bit and I think they will do so. Teach android OEMs how to make a big phone! I like android but many OEMs needs to sort things out. HTC, LG and Oppo have the right idea with gestures on lockscreen. Still the UI on the actual phone needs big improvements just like iOS. But I think Apple will sort this out and other OEMs will copy.

Will other OEMs will copy? Sure if it is worth copying. Will customers buy products from other OEMs after making their copied versions a lot better than the iphone? Ofcos they will. In fact, they will sell tones of millions of their products. Does Apple copy good stuffs from other OEMs? Hail yeah!
Who doesn't copy?
