23% of Apple iPhone screens are cracked, according to a survey

A poll taken by an insurance company that insures mobile handsets, found that 23% of the the 2,471 Apple iPhone owners responding to a survey were sporting an iPhone with cracked glass; some didn't have the time to get the repair made, while for some it was a matter of money if they did not carry insurance for the device...

My friend recently dropped her iPhone and the screen shattered, but she said she still love apple forever. I've dropped my S3 (which according to drop tests isn't very durable) a couple times on sidewalk/driveway/parking lot concrete and there are dents on the side, but no screen damage whatsoever. And I have no screen protector on my phone.

I have a few cousins who were apple-crazy last year. At one of the family gatherings I took my Lumia 900 out of its thin silicone case and intentionally dropped it and tossed it across tables to my wife and siblings. End of the night there was zero damage. They were dumbfounded that I could be so confidently "careless" when they had been through probably three ipods/phones each due to damage. Their dad (my uncle) said next time they broke them he'd be replacing them with Lumias (if they earn the right to get replacements of course).

A woman at work had an OG Droid with a really cracked screen. She used it for like a year that way. When my wife upgraded her Droid 2 to a Droid 4, I gave the coworker the Droid 2. I couldn't stand seeing that spiderwebbed screen any more. She surprised me with a $50 gift card to Guitar Center a couple of weeks later.

I've dropped my OG Droid at least 6 times onto concrete, nothing, I wonder how she managed to break hers...

It was in her purse, and she accidentally smacked the purse into the corner of a table. It must have been in just the wrong place.

Go on Craigslist and view all the notes, S3's, iPhones and all others with cracked screens. There's not a phone out there that's indestructible. And if it isn't, then don't brag cuz one bad drop is all it takes.

True, none is indestructible, but there are ones more damage-resistant. That said, if apple used the same screen glass as Nokia or the military-spec phones it could hold up better, especially with its small screen. Or, inversely, if something like a Galaxy Note used the same glass as an iphone/pod there'd be seemingly constant reports of damage due to the larger size and higher potential for damage.

I wish we could find the total sales of return and replacement iPhails and whether or not apple counts them with its sales figures. If this many are cracked (and many replaced or repaired) their figures would be inflated quite significantly

With all the drops my phones have been through, none has had a cracked screen. I even used my Nokia 3590 as an impromptu hammer once in an emergency. No noticeable damage and it worked great afterwards. Still have it, actually.

Smart choice. U can't go wrong with an iPhone. Very good device, not perfect but excellent. And when u decide to sell it and upgrade, the resale value will b very high due to it being the most coveted phone on the market. Put it n a case, and it won't lose value.

Correction: Every phone....can....or....might.....crack when dropped. Not all do. Some you have to drop repeatedly, some crack on first drop. Some crack from higer heights, some from lower. It also depends on how the phone lands. Every screen can crack or break. That said.....6 months I had my Droid X1 and it barely had a scratch. 6 months with my kids mother....and it has a huge crack in the corner and the bottom of the phone covering the mic is missing...lol. Droid 1, maybe 3 lil scratches. RAZR, scratches like my Droid 1, Maxx HD..scratch. G Nex, didnt have it long enough. Rezound....in my possession no scratches or breaks. Kids mother gets hold of it.....spider web cracks... :( Every phone I had has done face plants on tiled floors, concrete, in the street and never a really bad crack or break. I must have been extremely lucky cuz I dont do cases or screen protectors. I need to find out what my kids mother does with my phones...lol.

No cases anymore. No screen protectors anymore. I dont really resell my phones. I keep them as back ups. And I'm not too good putting the screen protectors on. And , at least when I got my last protector...it took away from the responsiveness of the screen. Last case and screen protector I got was in Mar 2010 for my Droid 1.

IPhone 4s, 32gigs..this article was somewhat unlucky for me.. After commenting here, I dropped my phone on stairs.. It bounced for 7times. My stairs has carpet.. No damage anywhere(it was in a case).. But wifi stopped working after that..

working in a cell phone store one of the biggest reasons for customer upgrading an iphone was the cracked glass on the front or the back of the iphone 4/4s. I don't think 23% have a crack but it may be in the 5-10% range sounds realistic. I think that the fact that the 4/4s not having any lip around the edges plays a big role in its crackability.

The most common/recent issue we have become aware of is down to ladies keeping the phone in the back pocket of their jeans and not remembering when they visit the loo....until they hear the splash and the penny drops! insure-your-mobile.co.uk
