Sony Xperia Z2 vs Samsung Galaxy S5

Our reviews of both the Sony Xperia Z2 and Samsung Galaxy S5 were overwhelmingly positive, as both offer a truly robust and very much enticing package. But sooner or later, it was bound to come down to a choice: when mercilessly pitted against each other, which one comes on top?...

Why do you keep testing the Amoled screens with default auto settings in some places, but not in others ? I mean, if you choose movie or photo for screen colors, its one of the best and accurate displays out there. More over, if you set the screen brightness to auto, you also get one of, if not the best, bright screens out there. It is a pain to keep reading about the over saturated amoleds, when you can change it, so colors are VERY natural. So on the bottomline, either you are not objective in your reviews, or you shouldnt do reviews.

I think PA just cant understand S5 adapt display...? If you want that f... real color choose cinema mode on S5...! PA says this stupid thing over and over again..! Do you think you are suprior than Display mate or GSMArena....?

Unprofessional on the display testing... I can tell that very easily.
But, the camera testings seems good enough. The Z2 beats the S5 here. Not sure why the conclusion says differently. Loss of edge sharpness on the Z2 is rather caused by the lens, not the sensor itself.

Unprofessional in camera comparison as well

The testing method seems good, but the conclusion is not what I think it should be. As an amateur photographer it's easy to conclude what's better by looking at the test photos rather than seeing their flawed conclusion.

"We generally found that 16MP camera of the S5 is superior than 20.7MP unit on the Z2"
LOLOLOLOLOLOL at phonearena.
Actually from what I found everywhere else on the internet is this:
In daylight: S5 and Z2 is considered equal. S5 has marginally more detail thanks to its overly heavy sharpening which in turn also makes objects look odd and unnatural, the colur accuracy goes to the Z2
Indoors, Z2 wins because S5 has big drop on quality and noise reduction starts to show its ugly head
In lowlight and night shots, S5 is no match for Z2. S5 really struggles. Exposure isn't spot on, lots of noise, plus there are heavy noise reduction artifacts plus heavy sharpening that make images even uglier.
4k video in daylight: Z2 has the edge in terms of stabilization and colour accuracy, but there is an autofocus issue. S5 has a weeny bit more details, but the colours are oversaturated to the point where yellow objects come out green, also its videos are shaky as it like a major earthquake is hapenning. Surely most people will choose a video that has focus issue rather than shaky video.
4k video in lowlight: Z2 wins again because the S5 has a lot of noise and major drop in detail.
And suddenly at phonearena, S5's low light shots are very much praised, LOL
Don't believe me? Here is a comparison with DSLR as a reference

Calm down bro..! You are burning... that is real !accept.. dont trust each youtube upload by any anti sammy..! I dont say because of PA says its better ! Its obvious..! Wait for gsmarena if you belive in that....?
57. FaisalWibowo11 (Posts: 116; Member since: 12 Aug 2013)
Lol, techcloud and btekt are one of the most reliable tech reviews on youtube.. And in those videos, they have a DSLR as a reference for goodness' sake!
Gsmarena are quite reliable if you ask me, but their camera comparisons are not quite as detailed as dpreview.com or dxomark.com or even techcloud, and btekt for that matter. However, in terms of reviewing smartphones, gsmarena is the best ever

So you trust what you like...? I dont know what gsmarena gone say because they havent review Z2 yet but I trust them so I say , wait for comparison then we will see..!
65. FaisalWibowo11 (Posts: 116; Member since: 12 Aug 2013)
I trust what is reliable and truthful.
gsmarena is reliable. However.. Phonearena is NOT!
I like phonearena for its user personalizations, user reviews for smartphones, and fast news. For reviews, however, phonearena is inconsistent, unprofessional, and biased.

Some how I agree with you..! Actually every one calls iphone arena and its right...!
67. pwnarena (Posts: 880; Member since: 15 Feb 2013)
now, i can tell you gsmarena will conclude that s5 has the better camera. the z2 photos are already on their comparison tool and they don't look great. still, i believe z2 has the better camera. i've been seeing a lot of samples and z2's camera does the better job,.
73. FaisalWibowo11 (Posts: 116; Member since: 12 Aug 2013)
I have also seen the comparison tools. You are right, for some reasons I wonder why 20MP shot of Z2 looks bad and 20MP shot of Z1 looks noticeably better. But 8MP shot of Z2 is excellent.
But in ISO 12233 chart, The Z2 and Z1 is noticeably better than S5 in terms of resolving natural detail. In the vertical & horizontal bars, Z2 and Z1 scored 2000 lph vertically and 1800 lph horizontally. S5 scored 1800 lph both horizontally and vertically.

facepalm. paid pitiful fanboy. no proof only delusions and lies
61. refillable (Posts: 631; Member since: 10 Mar 2014)
He has some points. Those youtube links, and even these Phonearena test shots are the proof.
74. sar44 (Posts: 198; Member since: 14 Apr 2014)
It about photo, and not about 4k. Phonearena test is proof in favor of me
79. pwnarena (Posts: 880; Member since: 15 Feb 2013)
i disagree. even the photos here favor the Z2. bear in mind that they are comparing 8mp vs 16mp photos here. z2 has the better colors.
81. sar44 (Posts: 198; Member since: 14 Apr 2014)
Why? Is nonsense. Compare with real life, not with other bsi sensors
76. sar44 (Posts: 198; Member since: 14 Apr 2014)
there night shots

I like know what do you think about my last post.
I can't see burned/ruined Sony photos in 1:1 zoom...
49. pwnarena (Posts: 880; Member since: 15 Feb 2013)
gsmarena already has photos of the z2 on their comparison chart. the superior auto 8MP version looks excellent and easily beats the s5's photo. the 20MP version however is horrendous.
71. pwnarena (Posts: 880; Member since: 15 Feb 2013)
i'm wrong. the SA z2 photo does not beat the s5 considering those z2 photos on the gsmarena tool. they look blurry.
i don't understand why gsmarena is unable to take crisp photos with any sony phone.
sony, you need to do something with your phones or somebody has to check on gsmarena's shooting methods. no sony phone has ever achieved sharpness on their tests.
78. FaisalWibowo11 (Posts: 116; Member since: 12 Aug 2013)
But T2 ultra is great. It is on par with Galaxy Note 3.
But you have a point, most of sony phones don't do great in gsmarena comparison tool, even the Z1 and Z2.
However, there is a huge difference of story here, you can tell that even the Z1 is better than S5

The s5 has no fm radio is a joke. Samsung, u break my heart
97. Somark (Posts: 10; Member since: 12 May 2014)
PhoneArena really needs to get a little better at judging photography.
The Samsung camera has a noticeably narrower dynamic range, making things more contrasty, but losing detail in bright and dark areas.
Samsung also smooths images way too much, wiping detail in the process. You can clearly see it in the Anandtech tangential test (see post 78 above):

S5 has strong (but clever) noise reduction + overly heavy sharpening. The result? Low contrast details such as foliage gets smudged but fine detail elements such as building texture, bricks, look very detailed but unnatural at the same time (you can see oversharpening halos in edges)

bad review, but still anything like this they did not write
102. FaisalWibowo11 (Posts: 116; Member since: 12 Aug 2013)
Bad review? It is you who just don't understand anything about image quality.
I bet you don't know how to read the vertical bars do you?

Z2 rules...i don't understand how PA run this comparison.
S5 is pathetic..
just compare Z2 with HTC M8.
PA told S5 isocell camera is superior than Z2? Lmao... kidding rite?
but its ok..matter of choice is about taste.

A great review article. Two awesome phones... I really expect A LOT better from Sony's camera department.
That would tip the scale in favor of the Z2.
Although I am intrigued by both these great devices, chances are I will pass on them. I still think my Lumia 925 can go toe to toe with these beasts (and win.) Especially if a user was looking for a smaller, more manageable device (size-wise.)
I on the other hand am looking for a larger device. G3 or Lumia 1520 successor on Tmobile!!!

Got the Xperia Z1s not that long and love it. Now waiting on the Z2 and S5 Prime to decide which one to upgrade to.

Just received the S5 through the post, been playing now for an hour and absolutely loving it. Hands down is a mile better than the iPhone 5. (Albeit an older phone :) )
Got a stonking deal from comparephonemarket.co.uk as well. New phone, saving money and more mins / data / texts. Insane

Let's cut through the chase. M8 for me. Had the S5 for some time, like the HTC much better.

Another benchmark comparrision.. Well, samsung maybe a winner due to overclocked 801, but more speed needs more power, and smoothness of apps and games depands on RAM not of CPU speed.
There are no such apps on market that would lag a 4-core device, plenty of power is still not used even on snapdargon 800, so batterylife is more to care about than if the brand new games will run on my device. Smartphone is still a phone and I want it to be reliable and long lasting than making it a portable game system. To play in a train I'll take my PSP.
Anyway Sony wins, cause 801 is an overclocked 800 and in samsung it's overclocked even more, but sony has a larger accu and bigger amount of RAM. I won't benchmark my friends with their S5's, it's a childish game of who's is better in colorful diagrams.

I love my GS4, but without a doubt when choosing between the Z2 and S5 - The Z2 would be my clear winner. It's like an Iphone on Android. With an FM radio - old feature but saves your life when internet reception is poor. Really miss it on my Galaxy.

S5 or Z2
S5 has great features, but no RADIO!
Z2 good as well, but i want the multi-tasking of s5

Hello everyone. I'm a little disappointed from Sony. I like more Xperia esthetics, more then gummy Samsung. I've a S3 GT-I9305 LTE (2GB), and for me the photos are really important. Like the battery life. Sony pictures seems washed to me, and every time that new models come out, the pictures seem more detailed on Samsung.
Despite have been reduced to 8(from 20.7) megapixels, I find the pictures of the Sony still "ruined".
I'm not a great expert in photography, but the problem seems obvious to me. With earlier models, they seemed even burnt, perhaps to excessive exposure ... especially when the subjects were as green as trees and plants.
How can you tell that Sony camera is superior?
This is a photo comparison from here, and put side to side in 1:1:
