Sony Xperia Z2 vs Samsung Galaxy S5

Our reviews of both the Sony Xperia Z2 and Samsung Galaxy S5 were overwhelmingly positive, as both offer a truly robust and very much enticing package. But sooner or later, it was bound to come down to a choice: when mercilessly pitted against each other, which one comes on top?...

PA's usual hate on SAMOLED really disturbs me. You have to absolutely fall in love of the GS5's marvelous display.

The super amoled display is totally amazing, I can't really see anything to hate about it

I struggle at their call on this, especially with all the love that Displaymate gave the S5.
I'm sure that the Z2 has a nice screen, but the screen on the S5 is absolutely breathtaking.

I agree with you.. AMOLED OR OLED are the best looking displays

100% agree with you - the S5 screen is simply brilliant.
Having both devices in my hands, the Z2 I have seems only marginally better than the TFT screen of the Z1. This could be the result of which manufacturer actually supplied IPS screen for my handset - Sony uses a multitude of suppliers so the quality ends up being a "lucky dip", varying from rubbish to ok... Mine seems to be in the middle, not good, not bad.
At least the S5 screen is made inhouse and adhering to strict quality measures. Sony need to up their game and secure a single source for their displays so that the consistency is there, before I go around pronouncing to the world that Sony is the best lol.

screens panel S5 vs Z2 vs M8

Z2 camera has better colors and wider field but S5 has a tad more details.
53. pwnarena (Posts: 933; Member since: 15 Feb 2013)
not really. those are 8MP photos vs 16MP. naturally, you will see less in the smaller photo.
they need to show photos with similar resolutions if they want to judge details.
62. pwnarena (Posts: 933; Member since: 15 Feb 2013)
yes. not even superior auto 8 MP. they look like manual 8MP because of the 4:3 aspect ratio. i'm not sure though. superior auto has a 16:9 aspect ratio and does pixel binning to produce compress 20 MP details in a smaller photo.

Sony has finally made their z2 a worthy competitor to the s5. But whichever is better at the end of the day, the s5 will still sell more units

Also, Cigarettes sell more than marijuana

Jus wondering.. R u still in middle school??

worst comparison ever... do you know the word fallacy?
127. Heddy87 (Posts: 28; Member since: 19 May 2014)
Go for Z2 if you wanna be online all the day and night... Z2 will be there for 3 days far away from charger. Can't say it about S5.

After all the s5 still the king of android.. it's not the best phone out there.. but it does almost everything better than its competitors..
132. Heddy87 (Posts: 28; Member since: 19 May 2014)
Especially with the full lag Touch wizz, which is not a thing to complain within the competitors... :P
Screen important, I agree, but overall speed win goest to Xperia... again.
Almost naked Android runs dozen times smoother than S5's. And all will occur after 3 months when you put you favorite apps, and configure the phone. Hundreds of contacts, messages.. xperia loads the screens and databases like they were empty, amazing speed.

S5 sells more because it's a total package. Android is mostly for power users, customizers and geeks. It seems only samsung understands that. People buy android for lots of features out of the box that IOS doesn't offer. This is the reason people buy samsung. Touchwiz may stutter here and there yet it still offers a huge user experience than other OEM skins. That's why sammy sells. It's not just about marketing. Why would I want an android phone which is trying to act like IOS.
10. ArtSim98 (Posts: 2956; Member since: 21 Dec 2012)
lol Android is for geeks? lolol. None of my friends who have Android (most of them do) are geeks... They're not even really interested in smartphones.

Physical home button and finger print scanner would like a word with you.
24. refillable (Posts: 641; Member since: 10 Mar 2014)
People buy Samsung because it is popular. And that popularity is only achievable by Samsung smart marketing. I believe 75% of the S-Series buyers doesn't even know what version of android he/she is running.
40. TechFreak123 (Posts: 85; Member since: 25 Feb 2014)
75% of all smartphone buyers doesn't know what version of android he/she is running.
Popularity isn't achievable only by marketing but by making devices that satisfied its costumers. People don't love to make their life harder, so if a device doesn't satisfy the costumer next time he will probably buy from a different company.
The reason Samsung is so popular as opposed to others android manufacturers is due to the satisfaction of S1-S3 owners who jumped from there to a Samsung device.
Not anything is about marketing. The only thing that marketing does is make people who would keep their older model for more time to replace it with the new phone sooner.

Well Samsung is reliable since back then. I won't really say that the S1-S3 does all the job of cranking up Samsung's name in reliability. But by no means I'm saying that they are not good. S1 was a no name back then, with not-so-special advertising. But, nevertheless the S1 was a good smartphone. In some way Samsung had predicted that this line is going to be a success. So, on the S2 they seem to put a very big amount of advertising and improvement on the phone itself, and got 50 million sales. That was the beginning of Samsung today. They continued that trend, surely, till now.

Samsung has the best specs possible but I dont know why so far they are ignoring sound department, they should pay focus to hifi sound as well... how much is it cost to put stereo speakers in the phone? how much it cost to put high quality dedicated sound chip in the phone for great earphone sound experience?
48. farhad_per (banned) (Posts: 128; Member since: 26 Mar 2014)
S5 all the way..! Best display.. best camera... best battery and the lighest and so on..! These are enough to be the best..! Great job sammy
66. refillable (Posts: 641; Member since: 10 Mar 2014)
Why did you say that as a reply to my post? Your post is unimportant to me. Also, I don't agree with 'best camera'.
138. Droiderr (Posts: 32; Member since: 05 Mar 2013)
I am pretty sure u are not going to agree with anyone who says samsung phones are good. Everyone has its own preference and u gotta respect that.
140. Heddy87 (Posts: 28; Member since: 19 May 2014)
In-door photos look horrible for samsung, and thats where We mostly take pictures, parties, family occasions, holidays. Sony makes great photos all conditions, without yellowish LED blur on the image. Great job!

''hey which cellphone you are going to buy this time? Sony? (Same with Nokia LG etc). Buy Samsung. It is best. Sony ( & others) not good''
this is mindset of majority people. Because Samsung sells millions of phones, making billions of profit, every one using it. Thats why it is best.
Sony n others? They are in loss. No one use, they are not good.
n except internet followers n tech people most of them dont even know what is inside? Just buy Samsung because...
Samsung is popular because of customer satisfaction? Really?
There are advantages and disadvantages in Samsung Sony HTC LG n Nokia all are same in this matter. But again only samsung is best because....
134. Heddy87 (Posts: 28; Member since: 19 May 2014)
Samsung is only samsung, and it profits suck against sony and apple.
Sony electronics profit of all for a year is bout 16-19% overall income (phones 6%, vaio 4%, PS4 9%). The 70-84% is banking and inssurance offer from Sony Bank and Insurance Taiwan. If you would make 80% profit from work and 20% from hobby it would be great but still just a hobby not a mainstream.
168. alaw.14 (Posts: 143; Member since: 10 Sep 2013)
actually samsung makes more revenue than anybody and makes way more profit than sony, but makes just barely less profit than apple.
133. Heddy87 (Posts: 28; Member since: 19 May 2014)
They probably don't know which S they're owning either, cause every S looks as it's predecessor (+1 for S5 and different back panel).
Samsung is still a power to affordable price winner. Maybe cause of used plastic materials and focusing on screens and usability functions on board. apple runs on apple logo, but soon there'll be no more to offer from apple than just a chrome logo on the back. Played a lot time with 4s and 5... none catched my heart really, small screen, apps like every other phones apps, users must be obsessed with logo to pay that much for 4,6" screen.
137. refillable (Posts: 641; Member since: 10 Mar 2014)
It's 4", not 4.6"... They know what they're running. They're not total noboos like the owners of the fruit company phones.

Want to agree with you so bad, but the general public don't know anything about any Android phones. Samsung's marketing and the early success is what carrying them today. They do make great phones, but what it comes down to is their popularity in the general public's eyes. To you, me , and everyone on PA, we do compare phones before we buy them. In the other hand, the general public goes with what is "safe" which is what is the most popular out there. That goes for iPhone as well.
13. E34V8 (Posts: 59; Member since: 16 Dec 2011)
PA, does Samsung pay you to write that bs in the design section? One is a stylish premium build phone and the other is a plastic toy. And you still try to make it sound otherwise.
35. StraightEdgeNexus (Posts: 3418; Member since: 14 Feb 2014)
You fanboys have become so delusional that whatever PA writes positive about samsung has become paid or biased. Seriously Crispy has written such a unbiased article. The s5 is no toy, Its solid, slim and light, though i dont like the cheap faux metal rim or the pimples on the back, but its not ugly.
43. refillable (Posts: 641; Member since: 10 Mar 2014)
Ugly is a matter of taste. But probably 4/5 of the tech geeks here says it's ugly. I think the right word is 'not-premium', not ugly.
68. E34V8 (Posts: 59; Member since: 16 Dec 2011)
I think you have me confused with some young fanboy. That is not the case. In fact I am a Samsung fan. I had SGS, SG Nexus and SGS 3 and I really love the OLED screens Samsung make. But cheap is cheap and that is the feeling you are left with when handling an S5. And I'm only talking about material choice and design. Other than that, it's a great phone with maybe the best screen. But it lacks the premium feel of HTC One, iPhone 5/5s, SXZ2 ...
89. Jason2k13 (Posts: 648; Member since: 28 Mar 2013)
the S5 doesnt feel cheap though? yes to the S4 and S3, but S5 feels totally different.
135. Heddy87 (Posts: 28; Member since: 19 May 2014)
S5 is tottaly different, I agree on that, the back gives some comfy silicone feeling, which is a huge advantage, but the sides still should be a solid metal. To many videos out there when Galaxy S4, or note is thrown accidently to the ground and the plastic breaks to pieces leaving user with a terrible hole in the corner. I would tottaly like more a little scratched alu then a broken plastic frame. Water resistance is not the issue, never washed my phone when it wasn't safe or waterproof, mainly the phone accidently is droped to the solid ground, by friend or cat, and that's where sony wins with a solid frame. A protective films for glass panels, and you are ready to go no matter where, samsung is always an egg type, be carefull, don't throw it, put it somwhere safe... ridiculus.
16. pwnarena (Posts: 933; Member since: 15 Feb 2013)
i thought s5 has the best color accuracy as the displaymate findings were reported here. so what happened to that displaymate report?
19. TechFreak123 (Posts: 85; Member since: 25 Feb 2014)
Phonearena keep insists not to test other display mode that are accurate (such as cinema and professional photo).
52. pwnarena (Posts: 933; Member since: 15 Feb 2013)
will that finally get rid of the green whites?
i've seen comparisons of the s5 and other handset displays. s5 is capable of showing whites as whites. i just don't know what's happening here.
my conclusions are different from phonearena's.
i think s5 wins in the display and z2 enjoys a comfortable win in the camera side.
69. tedkord (Posts: 4942; Member since: 17 Jun 2009)
They've also refused to test max brightness in auto, even though they know the S5 has higher brightness in auto than you can set in manual.
136. Heddy87 (Posts: 28; Member since: 19 May 2014)
Amoleds have the worst color accuracy, that's known from the beginning. The greens and blues are tottaly over saturated. But still amoled wins when it comes to vivid colors.. they are bright and juicy. IPS is more natural, some say even boring. Depends on user taste really, my eye doesn't like the amoleds, still S5 is a great well made piece of electronics. Going for Z2 was a hard decision to make, lots of hours playing with both before decision was made. Not regreting it, there will always be better phones, and after the best phones they'll make even better it is something we need to understand, waiting for a perfect device doesn't make any sense, like waiting for a perfect car to be made.
