Completely agree with what you said but I've got an awkward feeling that this is the device that'll be coming in my pocket (if this 5" behemoth fits in. Haha)....

I just don't get it, everybody bash this phone just because camera sucks and tend to ignore the build quality of the handset... this phone is water resistance and dust resistance and hence it create hype... you pay higher price because of this... Everybody want this mostly because build quality... im not going to be spec slave and I'm gonna get this for sure

For some reason I have a feeling that the water/ dust proofing had an affect on the camera as not many mil-spec phones have excellent call or photo quality.

It could also be software related. I'm sure we'll find out in the future.

What if all flagship this years are water and dust resistant?

phonearena did not do a very good review. look at the gsmarena review. phonearena did not even do benchmark tests. the XZ totally owns the gs3, note 2 and other phones in the tests even though it has to process 1080p res. they even point out that sony managed to squeeze out more juice from s4 chipset than any other phone manufacturer. optimization at its peak i say.

Xperia Z benches higher than a Droid DNA and Nexus 4. The s4 pro is far from outdatted the snapdragon 800 is only 40% faster with a better GPU. If you get this phone you will be good to go for 1-2 years and be able to enjoy any games android has to offer. People always forget that optimization matters, phones like the S2 might be old but they can still play all the newer games smoothly.

gsmarena says screen was not grt and camera is not yet tested .... xperia z is late and dissappointment.. DNA is better and M7 the one will crush it into pieces..

What are you talking about ....DROID DNA has better benchmarks.
My DNA has
21 - 22 k antutu
8.1 k quadrant
31 fps glbenchmark
and javascript performance of xperia z is too laggy to compare.
it looks gsm arena was afraid of dna and did not put its benchmark next to xperia z.

who says that xperia z javascript performance is too laggy to compare? and the benchmarks of both devices are almost equal except in antutu where xperia z wins by a large margin and quadrant where the droid dna has a higher score. and these are just benchmarks, when you start to compare them as devices, did you forget that droid dna has ONLY 11 GB non-expandable user accessible storage. i dont know about you but i think its totally stupid coz that 1080p screen can only be bragged about if you use a lot of media and games, which can easily take upto 1 gb of space each. you are going to run out of space in no time. and while the xperia z camera is not all that it was hyped up to be, its way better than the droid DNA's. the water and dust resistance is another plus for this device. winner: xperia z

The benchmarks doesn't even matter. If the phone is already running smoothly on JellyBean, then any amount of quad core or more powerful processor won't even be distinguishable. It's about software features and that's what Xperia Z is lacking. Why on Earth does Note II sells more units than Optimus G and DNA combined when in fact both phones are technically superior than Note II in terms of specs and screen? It's because of the features. Multiwindows, Touchwiz UI and so on

Agreee... Note has more feature than any other phone but DNA has much better GPU

I say, javascript is too laggy to compare.
javascript lower is better... and xperia z had 1.9k vs just one 1.2 k of dna..
1.You have no idea.... The Antutu benchmark of DNA is 21- 22k... for antutu v 3.x, what you see in old reviews is antutu version 2.x.. where all phones had lower score I can post a video anytime to keep your mouth shut.
2.SD.. Agreed.. but you dont know that international DNA\butterfly has SD card..so you fail again.
3. Camera of xperia better than DNA... dream on.. i can see pathetic pics and videos of xperia every where..

Screen is not good either even by gsmarena..
So DNA is still best on the market.. XPERIA is a let down

I have to agree with some of the comments above. The hardware specs themselves aren't that important as long as the phone works like it should - it's lag free and runs apps and games without hiccups. And I think the score is justified, for a top of the line, newest, flagship phone, it doesn't really blow the competition away. 8.5 is all it deserves. If the newcomers from samsung and others don't offer anything better, they should have a lower score than this.

When you think about it, there wasn't much competition at CES 2013.

What about the Ascend D2 or Lenovo K900?

Also, the first 5" flagship is the Oppo Find 5 but hey, I like your balanced no-nonsense review.

Well, there weren't very many flagship phones at CES to begin with... SO saying it's the best from CES isn't saying much.

When hype vs. reality fights, reality usually wins. :)

It's still a very nice phone, and my issues are less about the review point. I don't like bad viewing angles, Android buttons takes space off the 5" screen (especially if rivals could place it under without increase of size) plus all these covers over ports. In the end, as good an advertisement feature as water resistance is, if you find your phone underwater you're doing something terribly wrong

It's a well-rounded device as other reviews pointed out, but not perfect, you choose this, the DNA or the Find 5, and you'll be happy. But right now, as I've been saying for a while, it is worth waiting to see what Samsung and Motorola has to offer.
