Sony Ericsson W980 Review
Sony Ericsson W980 does not work as fast as some of the Symbian smart-phones, but we are happy that there are no annoying delays when browsing the menus.
The sound quality when talking disappointed us. The voice we hear is very unrealistic, robotized and monotonous, accompanied by unpleasant crackling all the time. As a whole, you will have problems with the understanding and you will have to ask to have things repeated even several times. The opposite situation is much better. The sound is monotonous and quite sharp, but is realistic and strong. We are disappointed because understanding what you hear with great difficulties while you are being heard well makes no sense at all.
The battery is Li-Polymer with a capacity of 930 mAh. According to the manufacturer it is designed to stand 9 hours of conversations, 300 in standby and only 16 of listening to music. In comparison, the W890 provides 9.5/360/20 hours.
Our first experience with W980 impressed us in an unexpected way maybe because most of the time we used headphones while listening to the music. The next day revealed the naked truth. The Walkman is a high class phone but it somehow does not match up with its price. Its materials give the ‘cheap’ feel and the single-hand opening could turn into a real struggle. In addition, the calling could be described as an unpleasant experience and the speakers are even worse than the ones you’d find in a low-end music phone.
These drawbacks are not insignificant so the perfect sound through the headphones and the built-in 8GB memory cannot compensate them. After all, W980 should not only be a music player but a mobile phone as well. It must be useful every single day… However, W960 should be mentioned as a good alternative - it is not more compact but has Wi-Fi and features the Symbian UIQ OS which makes it smart. You may find cheaper and more satisfying solutions such as the W890 or Nokia 5310 XpressMusic. They are compact and sound really nice during a call or when listening to the music. Well, they are not equipped with such a huge amount of built-in memory but compensate with card slots.
- Excellent sound quality when listening to music with earpieces
- Convenient control in closed position
- 8 GB internal memory
- FM transmitter
- Unsatisfactory sound quality while talking
- Inconvenient to handle and carry in a pocket
- The camera is not up to the mark
- There is no memory card slot

I don't know why you gave this phone such a low score. A friend of mine has it and she's more than satisfied with it! She hasn't got any issues with the sound quality. Also, I can't believe you gave the design of the phone such a low score!!

I don't understand either. This has been said by many as one of Sony Ericsson's best phones. Mobile-Review, generally critical with Sony Ericsson, has praised it on and on. GSMArena were left with "positive impressions." Something's definitely wrong here. I can understand the cons, where camera is not up to mark and there is no M2 slot, but awkward to handle? Other than the poor tactile feedback of the sidekeys, I don't see how it makes the phone awkward. And you even said it was convenient when closed. Looking at PAppeal, Christian Dior's ratings should be much higher. The phone's an incredible beauty, reminiscent of Japanese Flip Phone + Retro design.

I can't believe you gave the phone only 6 points for the design. It has a original design.
I too find this review odd. You have given some really crap phones a higher score than 6 yet this phone not? Your site is usually right but this time I am afraid you are wrong.
phone arena i think is bias between brands.. nokia are more praise worthy than sonyericson on thier reviews.
This is total BS. If im not mistaken, this phone won best European music phone at the 2008 annual European Imaging and Sound Association awards... and to give it a 6 for sound quality???! I'll never rely on reviews from this website EVER.

Strange Review are you sure you were looking at the right phone????? Think this phone is awesome... waited for a long time for sony Ericsson/O2 to bring out such a slim flip phone like this Sound quality A1 Design A1 Why would you need extra memory when you are given 8gb ????

100% biased review on this phone... TOTAL BULLSHITE I have had this phone for three months now: there is no better phone to me. 6 for design? I suggest you put some glasses on... Sound quality = 6 for a phone which has won multiple awards in that category? Who on Earth would need more than 8GB storage? Also, you can't exactly expect much from the camera of a multimedia-dedicated phone...
