Sony Ericsson W8 Walkman Review

Interface and Functionality:

As we mentioned earlier, the Sony Ericsson W8 runs the aging Android 2.1 Eclair. This is very disappointing to see on a smartphone launching in a time when 2.2 Froyo is dominating and 2.3 Gingerbread is already catching up. On top of the Android platform we see an optimized version of the UX interface, which is actually quite intuitive and easy to use. Every home screen on the W8 can have only one widget on it, but the limitation is probably imposed due to the screen's relatively small size. The four corners of the home screen can be personalized with a shortcut of your choice, which is really a neat feature to have.

The list of software that comes preinstalled on the Xperia W8 Walkman includes Timescape, which acts like a social hub putting notifications from Facebook and Twitter together, It also keeps track of your call logs and text messages. Of course, it is not as functional as a dedicated client, but it gets the job done if you need to take a quick peak at what is going on with your buddies. You also get a perfectly working YouTube player, Google Maps, and a trial version of Wisepilot for navigation. The GPS module on the W8 worked pretty well taking only about 20 seconds to find our location from a cold start and about a couple of seconds from then onwards.

Browsing the web on the Sony Ericsson W8 would have been a better experience if the built-in browser did support pinch-to-zoom and Adobe Flash. Nevertheless, heavy web pages, including our own phonearena.com, scrolled smoothly once the page loaded completely. You can connect to the internet either over Wi-Fi, or by using the smartphone's 3G radio, which theoretically could handle speeds of up to 7.2 Mbps on the downlink and 2.0 Mbps on the uplink.

The Xperia W8 may be made for listening to music, but as a digital camera, it really leaves a lot to be desired. The 3.2-megapixel shooter takes average-looking photos with little detail, even under well-lit conditions. Due to the absence of autofocus, close-ups look somewhat blurry, and since there is no flash of any kind, using the camera at night is pointless. The W8 Walkman can shoot videos in VGA resolution at 30 frames per second, and for a low-end smartphone, they look satisfying.

Sony Ericsson W8 Walkman Sample Video:

Viewing videos on the W8 is not something that you might be doing on a daily basis, but if the relatively small display does not bother you, the smartphone can easily handle MPEG-4 videos up to 800x480 in resolution. Other formats do not seem to be playable through the built-in video player.

The Sony Ericsson W8 Walkman comes with two components, which are essential for a music-oriented phone – a 2-gigabyte microSD card preinstalled and a pair of premium earphones that also double as a hands-free headset. You also get media and volume control buttons right on the earphones' cord for a fast and easy access to your tunes. Nevertheless, if you feel like using a pair of headphones of your own, there is a 3.5-millimeter headphone jack at your disposal.

So, how did it sound like? Well, after a couple of days of listening to a variety of music genres, we concluded that the Xperia W8 Walkman sounds better than most smartphones in the low- to mid-end category, but that is only because of the headphones that it comes with. Contrary to popular belief, Walkman phones do not have a special high performance audio chip in them. The earphones sit tightly inside your ear canal and isolate some of the background noise with their rubber tips, which is why the music sounds clear with a good amount of bass. The sound that they produce is just as loud as it should be, which some people who like cranking it up too much might find annoying. Overall, listening to music on the Sony Ericsson W8 is a pleasant experience.

In terms of software, the built-in audio player seems to be quite basic for a Walkman-branded phone, and you might be better off downloading a different one from the Android Market. You can sort your music by title or artist name, as well as to create playlists of your own, but the ability to browse audio by albums is surprisingly missing. It is also strange to see no equalizer presets and that the Mega Bass feature is not present. Overall, the default audio player is rather underwhelming and should have definitely been improved on. One useful feature, though, is the player's ability to search the web and recommend music similar to the one you are currently listening to, kind of like Apple's Genius, and it can even play it back through the phone's YouTube client.

A WALKMAN BRAND PHONE SANS EQUALIZER IS A DISAPPOINTMENT. YENDO WHICH COMES HALF THE PRICE TOO HAS EQS. SE SHOULD HAVE ADDED CUSTOM EQUALIZERS AND ALSO MEGABASS FOR IT TO QUALIFY AS WALKMAN.
WHY CALL IT WALKMAN THEN. WHAT A SHAME IF YOU HAVE TO DOWNLOAD AN APP LIKE MIXING OR SOMETHING FROM THE ANDROID MARKET ON A WALKMAN DEVICE FOR EQUALIZERS AND POWER BASS.

not a good choice, memory is full all the time due to andriod 2.1. Can't install anything to SD and andriod market app2sd can't be install on it. Call up Sony Ericsson hotlines and they are not sure when the updates will be. Useless and not recommended anyone to buy it.

What is the whole idea of Walkman W8 over the Xperia X8? I see there is no advantages of the hardware side, is the same with the X8 and yet the price is so much different with just a Walkman branded, Sony make no sense loaded the Walkman features on Android and the Walkman is poor. Why should pay more $60 for this? Since Sony loaded Android OS on its mobile we can actually find a better music player in Android market with just less than $2.00 on pay version with support and updates. The cheaper X8 can be upgrade to Android v2.1 or later. SO WHAT IS THE WHOLE POINT...SONY??

I have the X8 its not a bad phone consdering you can get it for £60 these days, and this W8 is only one with a diffterent coloured back and a walkman brand stuck on it and a slightly different UI...Hardware wise its IS a X8 so there would be little to no differences in them, for sound. they are the same in terms of hardware

Thx for all comments, i thought that this new brand of SE is as good as is rumors before it comes. But, by all of those comments, i realize that many of weak points on it. Dear Sony Ericsson teams, you have many of homeworks to give your customer satisfaction of your Walkman series. This is a bad issues of your newbie android walkman series phone. Please improve!! Especially on its sound quality!!

Hi there
I have recently bought a new sony ericsson w8 walkman phone.
I wanna clear that its not actually a walkman phone. Its only the advanced version of xperia X8 (with walkman software).
The performance is great, no hang up, works great with HD live wallpapers.
For mega bass, you can download any equalizer from android market from the following link.

Hi,I bought this phone last week. Screen clearity and Sound quality is better. But there is no option for Equaliser and no use of Walkman UI or SW. Battery is poor. Old version of OS 2.1. no Multi touch. Outdated technology. better go for Samsung pop or Ace with same rate range. if you are sony lover then for new x10 mini or Arc. W8 is worst

Hi I was going to buy Sony ericsson W8 because I am a big fan of music and games specially of walkman series as I have W550 till now , but after reading comments on the net I am confused and some question rised in my mind to ask the experts who have greater knowledge of this profession. Please answer my below questions:

1.) As I came to know sony is not planning to add MegaBass feature to W8 till now but suppose if in near future they planned to do so then will I be able to upgrade my existing W8 to one with MegaBass feature? Will that upgrade be software based (which can be implemented to my existing W8 set) or hardware based (which can’t be implemented to my existing W8 set)?

2.) Same question about Multitouch. Whether I will be able to upgrade my existing W8 to multitouch without any hardware change, if in future any related upgrade comes from company?

3.) Can I change Android 2.1 to 2.2 or higher (officially or unofficially) so I can install large number of games and application in my W8 by using memory card of the phone?

I will be very thankful to you all.

Hey guys i just purchased sony ericsson W8 phone two days back. What i felt at first time when listening to songs is this phone is useless in sound quality and even searched for equaliser as well, but later on i thougt that this phone doesn't require equaliser because whenever u think of sony first thing that need to peep in your mind is just check whether does the song we are listening really contain bass or woofer effect .If not just load some song which has bass effect then put your earchords on and listen to song you will really feel the difference and will come to know the power of sony sound system.
Guys what i want to say finally is Sony xperia-W8 has good sound quality it doesnt require any other download like equaliser or some other. just upload music having good bass quality(eg., balu movie in telugu songs) and put your ear chords corectly and just listen to this songs and come to conclusion.u will also defintely say wow............

Don't buy sony ericsson w8.There is lots of drawbacks in Sony Ericsson W8.

1) BATTERY
Stand-by Up to 35 h (2G) (with minimum brightness)
Talk time Up to 2 h
Music play Up to 6 h
2) can't move the applications from phone memory to card memory.
3) can't played the GPU games like angry birds, Cricket etc.,
4) Zoom option is not there for camera.
5) processor performance is too poor ( if u maintain 80mb free space in phone memory.)
6) can't you remove unwanted apps.
7) some times it gets hanging..that time you have to switch off & on then only it works.

my finally conclusion is W8 is worst ( don't buy in Mobile stores, bangalore. Those guys are Big cheaters)

Hi! I bought this phone last Christmas and I really like this phone. It's simple to use and it runs fine. All the necessary apps like Angry Birds, Talking Cat, Webster's Dictionary, First Aid Guide, Opera Mini, ES File Explorer, PDF viewer that I've installed in this phone runs well and there are no problems whatsoever until this time. Battery can last up to almost 3 days, if you know the trick. Browsing the web is fine but Facebook with its latest version is such a crap that I have to open my Facebook account through the web browser. But overall I really like this phone. Its just too bad that Sony Ericsson now Sony do not provide a newer Android version even Android 2.2 (Froyo) version to the least.
