Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 vs Apple iPad 2
0. phoneArena posted on 15 Jun 2011, 06:48
Although they share many physical characteristics with their designs, both the Apple iPad 2 and Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 are seemingly regarded as the cream of the crop in the tablet market right now. Surprisingly priced evenly at the starting cost of $500, the ultimate question comes down to which one is the better of the two...

The whole point of a review is to simply breakdown a devices features and provide examples. A product review or comparisson should never be written to influence the readers buying decision, merely educate them so when its time to walk into a store for a hands on feel they know what to look for and what to ask the sales associate.

Having both of these tablets I have to mention there are some subtle but annoying differences between the two. In the typing of text, iOS seems to be superior in autocorrection, Honeycomb ignores apostrophes in contractions like in "weren't", doesn't auto cap I etc. Also when making corrections or selecting text Honeycomb puts markers below the text which is hidden by your finger making cursor positioning harder. iOS uses a magnified circle with I beam cursor which is easy to see as you adjust it's location.
Scrolling seems to be smoother on iOS. So for camera, Flash and browser superiority choose Samsung. For app selection, touch features choose iPad. iPad apps also seem way more polished in look and feel. Android apps are functional but not elegant.

Someone drank the Apple-flavored cool aid.
Dyed-in-the-wool Apple fans will never like the Android operating system, (regardless of how wonderful the device is that it is installed on).
Apple users are all "ditto-heads" marching in lock-step with their leader, (Stephen Jobs), remember the Orwellian commercials, they were really Apple users. Performance, (does not matter), quality, (does not matter), no-signal, drops calls, no flash, (non of this matters), as long as it has that cute little apple on the back.
Go ahead, listen to the serpent, take a byte, (pun intended).

Here's an idea:
Step 1. Go to Best Buy
Step 2. Spend time toying with the iPAD 2
Step 3. Spend time toying with the Galaxy Tab 10.1
Step 4. Make a Decision.
Step 5. Buy the item of YOUR choice
Step 6. Go home.
No different then car buying, give it a test drive. The store has WiFi so you can test the devices out.

Any device will let you down in some way or another. I have 20 year as a software engineer and no OS, Device, Hardware or Software have ever totally come up with the goods. I just like to say something from the people who make these thing. We a young industry. People take about the automotive industry as young and it has 80 years on us. Every step is evolution, competition is great. I love the fact that people get so intense about about this subject. I heard someone respond to a rant about how great Apple was once (don't take this a an opinion one way or the other, their just tools not AI). They said you own an IPhone you didn't invent it. Haters are hates, fanboys are fanboys. @BrightIdea has the right idea (probably a software engineer). If you really want help make better products, buy them and say what you like about it and what you don't, constructively, like grown ups do. Love to the geeks.

Well Apple now has competition. The Galaxy Tab is a solid devices with a solid OS. Its to bad tech reviewers always go towards the Apple devices with their comments. Samsung has done a great job with the Galaxy Tab and its going to be a huge contender for the ipad2. Apple sueing Samsung is a complete joke, the device don't look the same at all. The Tab does not have a physical home button, the dimensions are very different front and back. But what sets these two apart are the OS that drives them. I have sold my ipad2 and have moved onto the Galaxy Tab and enjoying every minute of it. Android has come along way and keeps getting better everyday. Apple is starting to look like Andriod with pull down notifacations. So who is coping who here.

Hey everyone is arguing about silly things... chocolate or vanilla is more important than this discussion.... I have owned the xoom, the iconia, and the ipad 2, and the nook color...
for a reader I still have my nook but tend to use the ipad app for nook instead, now I will say this at the moment linux ... sry 'android' has the potential to be so much more than they are but that right now there are only a handful of tablet applications for the android platform where there are dozens of apple ipad apps. I happen to enjoy the experience of my IPad2 more and the variety of apps and functions that being said issues like the camera and use of flash are easily addressed with applications there are a few good browsers that support flash videos (though not flash games) and with the cameras there are many apps that maximize the camera to compensate for the baseline setting of the hardware ..... the android/linux platform just needs a little time to grow and mature then yes it may well be superior but at this point I enjoy my IPad the most out of available tablets...
though has anyone seen the iconia dual screen tablet .. bad ass right :)

Ah, as usual everyone is getting all pissy about phones. I think that phonearena seems to have a bias towards heavier devices. They mention in many phone reviews that the heaviness of a phone "gives it a feeling of quality" which I think doesn't make sense. It just pulls my fukin pants down. Out of these two, I agree that Samsung has the edge but it's not like the Apple is a piece of crap. Live with it... they don't compare two devices unless they are pretty similar, get it? Almost every comparison will end up saying that it depends on the preference of the user. No sh!t. I think Samsung won this round, but I'm glad manufacturers are pushing each other to improve.

On paper the Galaxy Tab is better, but what really matter for me us the apps/games. Apple has already 100.000 apps for iPad, I don't know how many the Android market has, but for sure they are less. And the games on the iPad have practically desktop quality. So, for now, at least, iPad 2 is the better option.

You know, i havent used either of the tabs in question, but it was clear to me that the writer of this review had a bias towards the ipad2 or apple in general. I'd say if it hurts so much to lose to the samsung galaxy tab, then i'd go for it cos clearly it seems to make the writer feel bad.
Dear writer, you can always get yourself the samsung galaxy, i wont tell, especially not your ipad friends.

I have an ipad2 and just bought a samsung 10.1 because I was frustrated not having flash. After having a week I definitely prefer the samsung over the ipad2 which I gave to my fiancé. Yes the samsung does not have the same amount of apps as the iPad but they do not charge for a lot of apps like apple. You can get a lot for free that apple charges you for. So if you just want to play games and look cool at Starbucks buy the iPad. If you want a great web experience and multitasking buy he samsung. Just my two cents.

I was going to buy the tab from amazon but it wouldn't ship to Australia. I was really pissed until I realized that iOS 5 was going to be phenomenal!!! All the things that pissed me off with iOS have been more or less corrected!
The camera is better on the tab but who's going to go wandering around with a tablet to take high def pictures? The screen resolution is higher on the tab but is assume it is very slight and not noticeable. It is slightly thinner and lighter which makes the tablet more comfortable to use. I must admit, the tab wins with the hardware.
Look at the software now. iOS is way more mature and stable than Android 3.1. It also wins 1000 to 1 with the tablet optimized apps (for the moment). Android also is also going to suffer more and more from malware because of it's open nature. It does offer more customisation and I love the widgets, but I they aren't essential.
Honestly, I believe that both tablets are equally good, but take a look at an iOS 5 video. You may be, as I was, completely astonished! I love my Android phone and still believe that Android is a better OS for smartphones, but not for tablets yet (maybe in a few years time).

There is one thing that I can not fully understand. This article is supposed to be a quite detailed comparison between the hardware - and the user experience – of the Galaxy and iPad electronic devices. How can you "forget" to mention than with iPad you CAN NOT NAVIGATE to any Flash based website (or see any flash at all) because the war that exists between Adobe and Apple and on the conclusion stating that "it’s a coin toss between the two". With iPad you are just excluded from a huge chunk of internet (if you use "legal software" of course), and I am flabbergasted to learn that this point it doesn't seem important for you... Is this made on purpose?

Yes Apple didn't like the fact that the Galaxy Tab was thinner lighter faster and brighter, no one is allowed to sell a product better than Apple, and when they do they get sued and have injunctions to stop their sales filed for all their hard work.

The reason why I use apple is because they have the headstart. Why? Who invented the first smart phone? What is everone's favorite gaming device? Why does ios have the most apps? Other "competitors" better stop going for apple's table scraps and start being inventive themselves. I'd rather have better apps than a better camera.

I bought the Samsung galaxy tab 10.1. The sliding between screens are not as smooth as the i pad 2. But, the galaxy tab has a sharper screen compared to the i pad 2. The Galaxy Tab's speaker are also not as good as the ones on the I Pad. The internet is faster on the galaxy compared to the i pad because of the dual core processor.
So the advantages of the i pad is that it has clearer speakers, more user friendly, and has more apps. While the galaxy tab has HD screen, faster internet speed, faster processing. So that's the difference between the I Pad 2 and Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1.
I would highly recommend the Samsung Galaxy 10.1

Also, flash is a addon with samsung 10.1..which for me is very important until html 5 completely takes over. I like the stereo sounds..internet really runs rigrously on this..i tried wi-fi, hot-spot using iph4 & samsung galaxy mobile - its awesome, bluetooth internet will help you with browsing, not much with downloads n uplods. 3g internet is awesome too. Entire google suits is very useful for me, i like it. Overall m happy :)

I happen to like Android, owning and liking Samsung Galaxy smartphone and Apple ipod and computer. I'm in the market for a tablet and found phonearena's comparison review exactly what I was looking for. Have to factor in the recent announcement that iPad2 will be supporting flash. My purpose for needing a tablet is business-sales presentations, and writing online newspaper articles with supporting pics/video when away from home computer, but will be doing lots of emailing and surfing since I'm a resource/info junkie. Am I reading this correctly that the Samsung may have an edge for my needs? I'm also interested in an comparison for the upcoming Amazon tablet which got my attention with the words 'no data usage cost'.

There is no doubt about the fact that Apple makes great products...WAIT! Apple "designs" great products and Apple accomplished on of the most epic events in electronics history. And that is creating a massive heard of sheep who are bound to Apple because they 98.7% of them cannot or do not know how to change their ways of living.
A true Apple head can admit that without a doubt Android is coming, scratch that HERE! and the amount of support that Android is receiving clearly shows that the majority of people with some sort of grain cells left are NOT sheep.
Apple has started a war with it's suppliers (Samsung) and although they may have more money than God currently they cannot make it without hardware suppliers.
Apple has 5 years in the game in less than 5 years they will be below what Android is today, unless they will allow more freedom of choice for their users and be willing to accept defeat in some areas.
Not easy to do for a sheep!
Android devices will without a doubt reign King!

I went for a SGT instead of a IP. Reason... all that crap Apple is doing to get the monopole in Europe.
If the IP was better than the S. then why would Apple want to secure their monopoly?
Further, to me, it looks like SGP is much better quality and stable.
Plus, the price for the IP is well over what I think it is worth.
For 200 Euro I would buy one ... not more ...
anyway, that is my opinion, maybe not somebody else's.

I have samsung g tab 10.1 and as for hw it is a great device. But... The scrolling within browser is not as smooth as on ipad2 (son has that one), lack of usefull apps is truly a pain, minimum accesories is the other minus. I use it mostly for browsing, email, twiter etc. What I would love to have in it is support for gsm and voip calls. In combination with headset that would be great.
As for the apps android seems to be more tools and gadgets oriented. Usefull apps are not many.

We all know the only reason why you people talk s**t about the others device is to convince or lie to yourself that what you bought is better. Neither one is perfect, Android is laggy, while iOS is limited by the os itself which no one really likes, we paid for it that means it's ours and we can do whatever we want with it.

OK, stop fighting like little kids. If you like the samsung, then get it. If you like the iPad, then get it. No need to keep rambling on about RAM, apps, SD, 4G, 3G, LTE, HSPA+, GSM, CDMA DPI, PPI, I/O, NAND memory, IPS, OLED, AMOLED, and all the nonsense with numbers and acronyms. Just get the one which you enjoy using and which suits your needs. For me, iPad all the way because in my country people don't even know what 4G is, internet is horribly slow, I don't want my home screen to reflect my internet speed, I want apps apps apps, contrary to beliefs, the iPad actually outperforms the galaxy by a huge margin. Android just needs lots of ram but still fails to impress. People just assume by numbers, but a geek bench proved conclusively that the iPad 2 is the fastest.

Make way for the new era -- just as the name suggest --Apple ipad -- of the past like Adam n Eve --- for the "Galaxy" Tablet like futuristic and space travel !!!
Hand's down Galaxy Tablet 10.1 is the winner. Can you imagine browsing through content on the web and being constantly being told you need 'Flash'. Happens more then 50% of the time with the ipad. Even YouTube play list's don't work. I mean the same video will work on Ipad while browsing YouTube but will not work when in a playlist.
Talking of giving credit where it is due the only feature that Apple can brag about is the "mirroring" or "Airplay". However, playlist's will play through Apple TV through it's clunky remove but not in the ipad. So much for mirroring !!!
I was frustrated playing media and content on ipad and then Samsung Galaxy 10.1 came as the savor.
Market place has ton's of apps and the number of apps are growing by the minute.
Kudos to Samsung and hope they continue to enforce the same quality as they have done in their Galaxy Tablet product !!!

I bought Galaxy tab 10.1, because I love the freedom you get with Google and I hate the arrogance of Apple.
I am happy with the fact that
-It is really Slim and light
-I can attach to it USB flash key, or SD card
-I can connect it with HDMI output
-I can connect it to a good keyboard
-I will be able to put ROMs on it
-Battery not bad
-Camera not bad "although not very impressed with it"
-Flash works out of the box
Not so happy with
-no smoothness while moving between the screens or while working on applications
-Speakers not so good
- Playing movies on it is really bad and lagging
-hangs some times and need to reboot it
-applications are very poor compared with ipad 2
-applications are sometimes crashing
-although the screen resolution is supposed to be better than ipad 2 , I feel ipad 2 is better and more real
- the user experience on the tab is not as good as on the ipad 2, it looks that the tab honeycomb is not yet ready for tabs, with ipad 2 gestures I feel the user experience is amazing
Over all do I regret to bought the tab 10.1!!??
Yes I do regret, ipad2 till now is better than it,
I wish that there will be a ROM or some SW that makes it better, "I hope"

The IPad compared to the galaxy tab in the above comparison had IOS4, IOS5 kills honeycomb and IOS4, IOS5 provides way more subtle notifications, notification centre, iMessages and ICLOUD!!!!!, Theres no way you can even compare the galaxy tab with IPad 2. The reason for the 0.7 mp rear camera is because it has a 0.7mp display!!!, IOS5 also uses the IPad 2s 3 axis gyro to digitally stabilize HD video recording. If you uses HDR on the IPad, not only will your pictures turn out better than the galaxy tab's but they will have next to no digital noise. My only con about the IPad is that it has a 0.3 mp front camera but since you only that for video calling, you never notice the low quality. Even thought the IPad 2 does not have adobe flash, it does have quicktime player.

I don't see why one should get offensive and abusive just because someone has an opinion. Everyone has the right to buy what one wants and share one's user experience.
As for my experience, I bought an iPad2 16GB Wifi edition in November 2011. My decision was influnced purely by the Apple brand name. Nothing else mattered. I was proud to own an Apple product but in a week the pride waned when I began to wonder if I had bought it in haste. I happened to play with my friend's Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, and found that I was missing quite a lot on the user experience.
No doubt the iPad2 worked well on some fronts such as internet browsing and email, but I began to feel if that was worth the money. The iPad2 comes with the s**ttiest camera, and a boring looking music player, has no flash and apple store will not accept PayPal.
By the end of a month, I began to feel cheated. When you get to spend a day without the iPad and don't miss it, then it's time for it to go. And it did go. I managed to get almost 70% back on a trade-in for a Galaxy Tab 10.1 last week. I am glued to it.
My wife is now complaining that I am not hitting the bed early enough, something that never, never happened when that sanitary napkin from a fruit company was around.
