Samsung Galaxy S4 Review

0. phoneArena 23 Mar 2013, 11:12 posted on

Another year, another Galaxy S phone! Since the very first Galaxy S, which came out in 2010, Samsung has been regularly refining and improving its formula for success in the mobile industry. It is mainly thanks to this series of handsets that the manufacturer is now enjoying lush revenue streams and having a profound influence over the whole Android ecosystem...

Can we stop complaining about the score please. The s4 deserves this score. HTC would have easily tied it or got higher ratings if the battery was better, maybe included a sd card even though I feel 64 gb is plenty and maybe added a few more software features. Still, I know that I want the ONE and anybody else can tell me different

The main problem with the HTC One is that it is way bigger than other 4.7 inch phones like the Nexus 4, One X, and Optimus G. That and the buttons are just bad. Reaching to the right to hit home is just not fluid.

C'mon bro, let's stop this nonsense. The s4 is an amazing device. I am personally going to but the ONE, but your statement is just invalid

I know this is gonna hurt a lotta butts in here, but the fact is that S4 is a massive disappointment. Its just a pack of useless features, most of which are not even explored by people using the phones.
HTC One is a better phone than the S4..!
Samsung fans, admit it..!

hey bro, just think about it. We all expected a lot to come from the s4 but when it launched, it was just a 5'' F-HD S3 with many features, software gimiks...
we are gonna pay a lot for the s4, and seriously, its gonna be for those features???? and also for the octo-core processor (which can only power 4 cores at once and for me its just a quad core), and the STUPID quality of the materials used to make it feel cheap and ugly..!
Just think about it, from now own many developers are gonna work on the software front and gonna bring similar or may be even advanced features like those in the s4, and its gonna be easy to have them in any phone with a processor and gpu to handle them..! (HTC One is gonna e in it, and even other phones with the S4 Pro chipset).
When I pay a huge amount for a phone, I want amazing performance, superb built quality and that amazing premium feel..! Which all will turn to the HTC One..!
Admit it my friend, the HTC One is a better phone here. And I'm not an HTC fan or a Samsung hater, but its the truth.
Even I was waiting for the launch of the S4 but it was a hurt in my butt too...
btw, I'm a Nexus 4 user..!

Mediocre sound on recording videos, speaker crackles at loud volumes, call quality acceptable, made with plastic. It seemed to me that in the article they kept saying phrases like this way too many times for it to get a score of 9.3. This score seems unjustified.

Samsung: Because Sir 50 million people would buy this phone. :)

Why all the hypocrosy and hate ? Every CONSCIOUS person knows that the Samsung GS4 is the best phone on the market presently. The HTC ONE is good ,also the Sony Xperia but the S4 is still above them.

I read something strange here.... I present my case: In the review: "but also to the nice glossy plastic material that's been used for the casing." // In the Cons: "Thin, plastic casing".

My point: "WTF????" As I read the review of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8, and you mentioned how nice the polycarbonate was and its hyperglaze, I knew you would place it as a con in the review of the Galaxy S 4, dear Ray S.

Please make up your mind. Either you like it or not.

Aside from that, there are some software features missing (i.e.):

- SwiftKey
- TravelMate
- Eye-tracking

And the Samsung version of Airview a la Flipboard.

For those who purchasing the Xperia Z you'll go back to the store and exchange it for the S4 because of all the numerous problems those phones have. Buy a phone for its features and not it's design.

I dont get the brightness knocks. My Note 2 is set at about % 30 brightness and I have never had a problem. Not bright enough , but then it is too bright?

IMHO, i would have preferred more of a refresh in design. I am waiting for the Note 3 anyway...

The HTC One doesn't have any notification toggles or looping home screen scrolling. Unless you root which is not always ideal since roms are buggier than the stock UI. Sure you can add widgets or a,custom launcher but that just clutters the home screen or add more bloat to go along with blinkfeed and the stock sense 5 launcher....

As for the "AMAZING Camera features, they were copied from LG ( Dual shot), HTC (dual photo & video button, drama shot; eraser, filters), Nokia ( Cinema photo), the only innovative feature in the S4 is sound & shot, and maybe "beauty face"

Take a look at this crap these guys dont even knwo how to properly rate. Apple iPhone 4 Verizon Gets a solid 9 where as Apple iPhone 4s Gets a rating of 8.5 and the fu ...king list goes on and on. Apple iPhone 5 has non removeable battery and sd card and gets a 9 rating What the hell is going on with PHONEARENA? As far as i can see HTC One should have Given 9.5 at least with better sound and screen faster processor so much more cuz it looks like non removeable battery and sd card cant prevent apple from getting rating a of 9. SO what is the personal issue you guys have with HTC cuz i dont see one reason HTC cannot get at least 9.5 and above.

Larger display and yet both thinner and easier to hold than the previous model, much higher screen resolution thanks to the 1080p display that isn't pixelated or grainey. Bigger battery despite how much more thin it is and still removable with micro sd card slot. Improved camera and up to date android version(other than the Nexus series, no other phone is) Improved touchwiz that is even faster and smoother than even before.

The lists of improvements go on and on.

cheap feeling plastic in the hand that you would be a fool not to have a case on at all times (therefore making the thinness irrelevant) because of it's thinner size and larger display with no structural reinforcement over the SIII which didn't fare well at all in the drop tests itself. 1080p is nice but still a very minor improvement much like what can be said about the S4 as a whole. yeah, bigger battery is a plus but the extra 500mAh is going to be completely eaten by the 1080p display and the higher clocked CPU's & GPU's so i wouldn't expect better battery life than the SIII. microSD card slot is a plus, improved camera is a plus but when it comes to it having the most up-to-date version of Android it really doesn't matter. the S4 only has one of the major enhancements of 4.2 and that's the pull down toggles which is just cluttered up by Samsung. there's no lock screen widgets, none of Google's camera enhancements and the keyboard has taken a downgrade from Samsung's 4.1 keyboard it looks like. 4.2 from Samsung is nothing to celebrate over. they just want to shoehorn any Android aspects with their own features. TW as a UI has only received minimal touch-ups and most of the new features are quite gimmicky.

i'd get the One over the S4 pretty easily. Samsung can keep their "Tock" update.

thumbing me down clearly shows me there's people that either don't like me or like what i have to say but it doesn't show me i'm wrong so all i see are the 5 thumbs of butthurt Samsung fanboys.

well naturally the idea for Google to add that to Android natively came from OEMs like Samsung that already had it. Samsung pretty much just felt they should add onto it in their 4.2 build but they just threw in more toggles that most people are probably not even going to use and they took away the G+ link. it's not really bad per say but like i said it seems cluttered and i think they should've just done something completely different with that pane.

how is that so different than what you do with the One? trust me, that's just how i feel about the S4, i don't like it and i've had Samsung products. oh so to you if someone has a problem with something Samsung does then that someone is bias and unintelligent? such a fanboy...

explain to me why someone should see this as stupid and biased. just try not to give me the stupid and biased version. :P

Well, a lot of your cons are pretty subjective. For example, the toggles that you say are cluttered compared to stock 4.2 seem pretty brilliant to me. You can minimize it, hide it away from the home screen, heck you can ignore it. open it if you need more toggles, and the best part is that it seems designed so that you rarely ever have to dig into the settings for anything. To me the way they handled toggles is pure win and a major strength.

That is only the first area I disagree with. i pretty much disagree with your entire post and in my eyes. all you are doing is reaching really hard to find things that you can use to discredit the GS4 with. To me that screams bias and a lack of objectivity which can appear to others as a lack of intelligence in constructing proper arguments.

I don't think the plastic is cheap feeling as it is cheap looking. I've heard a couple reviewers at the event saying that even though the GS4 is made of the same materials as the GS3, it has a more solid build to it. The only thing I don't like is the gloss, and the removable back which makes a weak point that can fly off when dropped. The GS4 does look cheap in comparison to HTC and Apple's metal, Sony's glass, and Motorola's Kevlar, but on its own it's just fine minus the gloss. But that's the problem, the GS4 isn't by itself; competition is tough this year.

As for 4.2 on the S4, Samsung didn't really put any elegance into it. They just slapped on the features and called it a day. Also, I'm pretty sure the GS4 does have lock screen widgets; you can see in PA's cold boot video they did at the GS4 event, once the phone booted up you can see the screen giving indication to swipe the edges of the screen for the widgets. I will definitely replace the keyboard with Swiftkey though. I was kind of looking forward to a nice re-design to Touchwiz, nothing major, just something new.

I probably will choose the One over the GS4, but I'll at least give it a chance and have my own hands on with it, it's only fair. I mean, you can't NOT at least try the new flagship Galaxy S device. The only real problems I have with my S2 is the old Touchwiz, the build quality, and the slight lag in web browsing.

Regardless, whichever I choose I'm going to sell it later in the year for the Motorola flagship or the Nexus 5. Trying to get a cycle going where I get 2 new devices a year; the HTC or Samsung flagship the first half, then sell that for the Nexus or Motorola flagship the second half.
