Samsung Galaxy S4 Review
0. phoneArena 23 Mar 2013, 11:12 posted on
Another year, another Galaxy S phone! Since the very first Galaxy S, which came out in 2010, Samsung has been regularly refining and improving its formula for success in the mobile industry. It is mainly thanks to this series of handsets that the manufacturer is now enjoying lush revenue streams and having a profound influence over the whole Android ecosystem...

I know these other phones look good and have a few new features but none match Samsung. I have the note 2 and no phone compares to what it does for everyday use. The features I find myself using more and they battery life is unmatched. The s4 will out perform these other phones just like the s3 did. Htc always has software issues along with being horrible with getting updates. Samsung beat apple for a reason and it continues to get better.

Rather than s4 I will get htc one or butterfly. don't want same design phone after using s3. u will not feel like u have bought a new phone because of same old plastic design.

The S4 seems like a nice unit. Processor, RAM, camera all are impressive. However, to me, the new features are really quite useless. In terms of display, I have disliked Sammy's over-saturated colors for some time. It seems that it is likely a selling point for the phone though. Think about it. The brighter colors show better in a fluorescent lighting environment, making them look better than the competition. For me, seeing the unnatural colors day after day is a turn-off. While I absolutely hate Touch Wiz, it really doesn't matter to me since there are a number of third party launchers available which can make the phone much more useful and stock-like.

can phonearena confirm it that, S4 is not having FM radio. in both the models???
samsung should not miss a FM radio in its nxt flagship S4....

For the record, if anyone is considering an Xperia Z, slap yourself for even wasting the brain space. Sony has made terrible phones since their Ericsson days. This is coming from a seasoned AT&T employee.

Android is attracting 80 % of Malware of the Smartphone Market. For every 1% market share growth, the Malware is increasing by 10%. People are getting duped to the tune of Hundreds of millions of dollars due to attacks, trojans etc.
Please read the story below from NBCNEWS:
"Since 2011, Android's share of the worldwide smartphone market has skyrocketed from 49.2 percent to 68.8 percent. That success has not been unqualified, though: a staggering 79 percent of all malware on mobile devices targets Android machines.
According to Research firm, F-Secure Response Labs, which monitors digital threats around the world and keeps wary consumers informed and protected. The report states that while threat levels on BlackBerry, Windows Phone and Apple's iOS are relatively stable, Android's potential hazards have been multiplying at an alarming rate.
The most prominent risk comes in the form of premium SMS scams. These rogue programs are simple and often quite insidious. By masquerading as legitimate apps (such as "Angry Birds" or Instagram), premium SMS malware often installs a working version of the program, but one that requests permissions well in excess of what is normally required.
Gaining access to a user's credit card information, these programs then subscribe to costly messaging or subscription services, putting money directly into scammers' pockets.
Other popular Android hacks include banking Trojans, and anyone using a banking app should be watchful for this kind of malware. To make online banking possible, banks provide users with an authentication number, which is then saved in the phone's cache.
When hackers get their hands on these numbers, conducting seemingly legal transfers of money into shady accounts is simplicity itself. Last year, one particularly invasive Trojan called Eurograbber robbed users of over $47 million.
Android's rise in market prominence and its malware woes are linked, but a 20 percent increase in market strength does not explain a 200 percent increase in harmful software. In this case, Android's greatest strength is also its Achilles heel.
The platform is considerably more open and developer-friendly than its iOS competitor. While this gives Android operators more freedom in installing apps and modifying a phone's user interface, it also makes the operating system a much easier target for hackers."
Please share this story with everyone.

I'm a Windows Phone fan, but I must admit Sony Xperia Z is the most beautiful Smartphone I've ever seen in my life. And I also believe that it's definitley better than the S4, simply because it's Sony.

I respect your statement but find your argument to be the dumbest statement anyone can put forward.
393. TMach (Posts: 439; Member since: 29 Dec 2011)
I choose the HTC One (bought today from Phones4U) and the Xperia Z which I have been using for a while. Here's the thing, as they say, you can put lipstick on a pig but it is still a pig. In the S4's case, the lipstick is the software with the pig bit represented by the less than premium hardware....basically a "not so" cheap bit of plastic excrement.
414. donfem (Posts: 591; Member since: 30 Mar 2011)
I guess you hate pigs but love bacon. In a world where performance is key, you are still talking about looks? Probably you can't tell what a good looking product is and ought to be.
394. Xavier1415 (Posts: 24; Member since: 26 Feb 2012)
Buying HTC one sorry thanks but no thanks Samsung starting to remind me of apple. Had respect for u until u made the galaxy camera smh a waste
413. donfem (Posts: 591; Member since: 30 Mar 2011)
And how has your respect affected the quality of the final product? Or affected the sale of the product? For everyone who goes with another product, many more will go the opposite way.

the final hardware unit has better call quality.. gsmarena has the final hardware unit :)
so it isnt one of the cons now..

I ensure 2600mAh battery is not enough to use for a full of day
401. johnriii (Posts: 236; Member since: 17 Oct 2011)
what is it with the "it looks like a toy" and "it's plastic" argument. do you really buy a phone based on the outside of it? HTC has always made good looking phones for the most part, but that comes at a price. personally, I don't care if it's made out of plastic, because I doubt that people from miles around are going to randomly ask to feel my phone to see what it's made of, then berate me because it's plastic, or fiberglass, or whatever. it's a pretty weak argument against samsung products.

All this blazing speed, an still, USA leads the world in having the SLOWEST internet. 1mbps down, ATT, Houston. Who needs a dual core processor with 2 gigs ram for dat?
446. soldier1969 (Posts: 17; Member since: 21 Apr 2013)
36MBs down 16 up in Nashville on 4G LTE speeds AT&T.
412. donfem (Posts: 591; Member since: 30 Mar 2011)
I guess personal opinion should be taken as fact on these boards and should be accepted as final decision? If you do not like Samsung S4, then dn't buy. I don't need anyone to tell me about their choice of phones on an article reviewing a Samsung product. It is stupid for people here to thumb down a genuinely written review which is based on the writer's perspective, and talk about "I am buying this and that". A lot of people need to grow up.

Please no-body buy smartphone above £500 (although £500 is quiet a-lot) these companies are taking advantages now. :@
431. sswain (Posts: 50; Member since: 10 Feb 2012)
Above £500 IS what it costs, if you do not have a LENGTHY Contract, for a top of the Line Phone.
Look at the cost for a small Tablet or a Laptop with equal Benchmark Scores (AND with a 1080P Screen and Cellular connectivity), a smaller (more miniaturized) Device costs a LOT more to make.
If you do not want to pay then simply ask your Cellular Provider for a FREE Phone, they have MANY to chose from and you (think) you pay nothing. The REST of us are willing to pay from £100 to £700 for either a shorter Contract or NO Contract unlocked Phone.
If no one paid anything then no one would make Phones. Why don't you simply open a competing Company and give out Phones for FREE along with FREE Cellular Service -- I GUARANTEE your Company will be Popular and have a LOT of Customers, you want to be 'The Wheel' then do that !
433. KashAli (Posts: 105; Member since: 01 Apr 2013)
Don't forget its a Mobile Phone. Not a private jet. In Future £1000 then ! No way. Do one :@

NoCashAli, did something in that Post lead you to believe someone thought otherwise? best have another look.

The Xperia Z and the HTC ONE is for people who have great taste. The galaxy s4 is for nerds and geeks who have no taste and wants features only.
429. DualVoiceCoil (Posts: 5; Member since: 08 Apr 2013)
For a flagship phone, it is interesting that it comes only with one speaker. Is there any information or further specifications on the type of speaker technology it utilizes? I searched the web but couldn't find any additional information about the speaker technology. I'm okay if it were a dual voice coil speaker.
I currently have the Samsung Note I, and will upgrade to this great device! I'm glad it comes with 64GB of on-board storage -- which is a major plus!!! -- PLUS(!) expansion memory slot up to 64GB!!!! I was leaning towards the LG, but with only 32GB of internal, the GS4 is my choice and a good upgrade from my Note I I got about a year ago.
The other thing that could be improved is its battery. I believe the LG Optimus G Pro comes with over a 3mAh battery!
I never had any complaints for the plastic backing on my Samsung Note I. I would probably like to see these kind of flagship phones with Windows 8, though.
430. sswain (Posts: 50; Member since: 10 Feb 2012)
Under "Cons" it says "Mediocre call quality".
I guess that would be a bad thing if you plan on using this Phone to make phone calls.
Doh ! -- Fail !

437. johnriii (Posts: 236; Member since: 17 Oct 2011)
Has anyone seen pricing for the S4 on Verizon? I've seen $199 on at&t for the 16GB, and verizion usually matches at&t when it comes to pricing on the same smartphone. if this is the case, I'm totally on board with the S4. the Note 2 is my alternate choice, but the size is the only downsize for me. I don't think I can lose with either phone....

I have a niggling suspicion that Samsung's missed the boat this time. The phones will still fly off the shelves but only for the moment.
It feels lazy and safe and that for me suggests that they're forgetting that the original S & SII were actually good looking phones. Infact that slab xperia z....Take a look at the SII again,
It is folly to believe that function is all you need. Anybody can buy Technology. It is nothing without Desire.
In the world ofBlade runner, the S4 is a Government device. This year, I'm packing the HTC

The only problem with Samsung is their Design. They always have the best performance among the phones but worst design.
453. kbayer (Posts: 19; Member since: 08 Feb 2010)
As long as internet in the USA chugs along at 1mbps average, what difference does hardware, software, or anything else matter? Stop, go, freeze, load, stop, go, freeze, load... screw it.

Just bought the Samsung Galaxy S4 an hour ago. Before I could find a case for it, I dropped it out of my lap. It was only two feet to the ground but it caused a crack all the way across the front of the phone. I've dropped many a phones in my day but never had one crack! What a cheaply made piece of crap!
458. pastech (Posts: 3; Member since: 14 Nov 2012)
I'm having an issue with the S-View Cover, it does NOT close flat properly, even if I leave my S4 upside down on a flat surface for an hour, as soon as I pick it up, cover lifts about 1cm off the screen, it's FRUSTRATING...
