Samsung Galaxy S III vs Apple iPhone 4S
0. phoneArena 18 May 2012, 08:41 posted on
Always a difficult decision, choosing between the latest and greatest Android phone or the latest and greatest iPhone is a problem that every smartphone user faces at one point or another. Having both the Samsung Galaxy S III and Apple iPhone 4S here with us, we thought that we absolutely have to pit these two ambitious guys against each other in order to make it easier for you to determine if you are more of a Galaxy S or iPhone user...

I wont buy an apple product until they clean up their act and change their attitude about things.
The crapdragon... eehhh. probably not. Still waiting on confirmation of which version Tmo is going to get, even though I have suspicions that its going to be crapdragon.
Once I get confirmation of where the new 1900mhz spectrum is going to be active, I might eventually pick up an international version if I fall into one of those areas (which i think i do).
If not, here's to waiting for the Note or something else.. lol
Im not brand specific. Im tech specific.

could care less about brand,if it was based on which brand is popular than i would get an apple product but for me its more to do with which provide the best hardware and features money can buy.

The biggest downside to iAnything is iTunes and the closed ecosystem. While some may like that, most don't. Almost anyone will complain about how iTunes lost files, lost contacts with it's sync or did something to generally piss off the user. You can Jailbreak the iPhone which allows you to put it on another network... until Apple puts out a patch that effectively nullifies that work (A co-worker and I had that discussion yesterday about his i4S).
It's not that you can't DO things with the iPhone, its Apple's "Our way, or the Highway" Mantra that gets old fast. If they don't like something they simply remove your ability to access it, with or without your permission.
Microsoft tried doing some of that and got slapped with Anti-Trust lawsuits. MS now allows you to turn off/Uninstall applications (IE, Media player, etc) and install any number of third party solutions. Android does the same, you can install/uninstall anything you like. Apple, not a fat chance.
The biggest problem I have is the Apple fanbois love that. It's like they are suckers for punishment, those that like it "rough". They complain and in the same breath they praise Apple for doing it, its mind boggling.
I won't deny that Apple makes great hardware, their aluminium body MacBooks and i4S metal/glass construction are really top notch (except for the fact the glass breaks way too easily). But it's impossible to buy into the company line and its closed ways.
The SGIII has a superior interface, os, ecosystem and actually includes useful features. Sorry Apple, you built a great phone, Samsung just built a mini supercomputer.

I'm writing this before I read this review and I'm pretty sure iPhoneArena & Ray surely will make this a tie, despite of the more superior specs and more reasonable price that "you know what" has. . Let's see then.. lol

update ! after reading the whole review, I think it's quiet fair and transparent. But PA should make a winner in the next "clash between iOS and android titans", though more people will be pissed lol (really

I think I just realized why Samsung stuck with the Gingerbread green in the notification bar. Blue doesn't last as long as red and green.

"Are your needs limited to the basic phone stuff, surfing the web, occasional social network check and maybe even playing a game every now and then, but you have no intention of spending hours of rooting, flashing ROMs and searching for the ultimate widget set? Well, you guessed it you'll be better off with the iPhone 4S, as it's designed just for you, buddy."
So, you want to say that I will have to spend hours of rooting, flashing ROMs if I want to have ability to play games, browse the web and use social networks on Android devices??? So according to you, if I won't root and flash ROM of Android device, I wont be able to play games, browse the web and so on??? Are you joking???
49. hutty24 (Posts: 84; Member since: 18 Oct 2011)
root roms and web are the way to go on android, social networks just became OK on it like two months ago, games are mostly copy and paste over from the IOS

who wants a gigantic 4.8" screen? I am not. who wants quad-core processor on a phone? I am not. I think quad core is useless in time for me. still love compact phone like iPhone 4S.

Good for you mister tiny hands.. enjoy your everlasting app drawer OS
36. goesoer (Posts: 13; Member since: 22 Nov 2011)
nah, and surely you can take ur GSIII for table tennis racket coz it's huge. good for u if u want "simplicity" on a single way.. :)
40. GALAXY-S (Posts: 701; Member since: 07 Jun 2011)
yea i wouldnt doubt it! the SG3 can do it all :)
.. well i guess you're one of those user who doesnt really pay attention to smartphones. but wth its an "iphone" why not, right O_o
41. goesoer (Posts: 13; Member since: 22 Nov 2011)
hohoho,, really fun with GSIII slogan "made for human". We're all know that a human just have 2 hands,, and if u operate the GSIII by that 2 hands, how cool you are? null. I think "made for beast" is totally rechange the previous slogan by its realitty. It isn't fit on my hand, Asian man hands,, and if it fit for u... WOW

some like phones with big phones some dont...just cause a samll or big phone is not for you does not make the phone redundant..i had the 4 and then the s2 and carrying the phone round was no different unless you where super tight jeans. the s3 yes its big but for me the advantages are worth the size and as long as its pocketable then thats what counts...didnt people make fun of the note and look how well thats done.it shows there are millions of people that do want bigger phones...i remember when the original iphone came out and i considered that big lol now its considered small, even 4.3'' phones are considered small by many.people eventually get a custom to certain things i mean there are many people who will not get the iphone just because of the screen size..basically its a good thing that there are all these phones with different screen size as not everyone likes the same things therefore there is no perfect screen size.

Unfortunately for you, a table tennis ball can shatter an iPhone.
111. chadrick0814 (Posts: 208; Member since: 23 Nov 2011)
Never try to play a table tennis game on an iphone. Your 2 x thumbs will cover 80% of the screen.
30. GALAXY-S (Posts: 701; Member since: 07 Jun 2011)
The galaxy s3 is of coarse the better choice for me..
I would take IOS on an ipod or ipad only.. as a phone the iphone just doesnt cut it.
39. shamataa (Posts: 202; Member since: 07 Dec 2011)
OMG just say THe GS 3 is better. IT blows it it out the water in every single way. How come they always call it even . Even though clearly the other phone is so much better.
42. sithman (banned) (Posts: 299; Member since: 21 Apr 2012)
I'll have both. It's like beyonce, and Jessica alba why even choose.
44. baldilocks (Posts: 511; Member since: 14 Dec 2008)
Weak speaker? The GS II has a very loud speaker (back) when listening to music. You mean to tell me that they downgraded that?
The GS II is just as loud as the 4S.
Would like some clarification on this.
45. eli577 (Posts: 81; Member since: 29 Jun 2010)
I don't see why you guys cannot write down that an android powered phone is better than an iphone. You pretty easily decided in the one x vs gs3 article that the gs3 wins (i think though it didn't) and now you say this and that and everything.... and then it comes down to preferences. Yeah, right.
47. Windsponge (Posts: 92; Member since: 01 Nov 2009)
Why did you show different views of key board. This review was worthless in my opinion . Buy which ever phone you want. I don't care what you buy because I wont be using it anyway. Not everyone is looking for same things anyway. Beginning to think this site is being paid by the companies to make these articles. Get real and tell the truth. There are problems with all these phones which you act like they don't exist. Not siding on either phone but am sick of wishy washy reviews.
50. ph00ny (Posts: 602; Member since: 26 May 2011)
Are you saying SGS3 can't do any of these things?
Wouldn't Gaming, web surfing, etc be better on a larger higher resolution screen?
"Apparently, those guys would be the kind of users who don't really pay so much attention to their smartphone, but still want something that's contemporary and reliable. Well, you guessed it you'll be better off with the iPhone 4S, as it's designed just for you, buddy."

I would like to add no quad core on us models.

damn it man.. This guy's language is offensive, i don't like him

Yeah...totally biased...think he is one of those who have reflective glass panel on back of their phones.
56. Non_Sequitur (Posts: 1111; Member since: 16 Mar 2012)
Not even going to bother posting a well thought out comment on this.
58. jove39 (Posts: 1285; Member since: 18 Oct 2011)
Ray...this is not a really what I expected...You ignored SGS3's quad code processor comparison completely...you tried favor iPhone for having small display...almost same 2yr old iOS...and so called...up class glass body...that is good for nothing...except breaking into pieces with slight drop...almost all iPhone users keep their phones in case...when do you see beautiful glass body?
SGS3 has best OS and HW combination and top of all best dev community to support.

hey ray all right review but cant agree with your conclusion, you saying the only reasons to get the the s3 is if you like to tinker etc but you can also just use the s3 as simple as the iphone and just just use it for browsing, gaming and downloading apps and its arguably better on the s3 due to the bigger screen..the s3 can be as simple as the iphone or be complicated if you want it to be. the difference is the iphone is simple and thats it but the s3 is simple but if needed to much more it can be....overall a great review but i dont agree with the conclusion that if you are only browse the web, play games etc the 4s is the better phone as the s3 does them things just aswel.

" Now, let the intelligent and level-headed discussion begin! "
What discussion? The iPhone 4S looks like a mid range device next to the mighty Galaxy S III. Come on Apple, make a phone with a decent screen size!
And btw, Android is also easy to use, more functional etc... you do not need to root or install a custom rom. Ray, your reasoning is wrong. I like your reviews, but you can't hide that you are an iFan.
74. taz89 (Posts: 2014; Member since: 03 May 2011)
i think as a iphone user for a long time he didnt want to say the s3 is the better phone so he came up with a conclusion that didnt really make sense as the s3/android can be as simple as the iphone if thats how the user wants it to be or if the user decides to use the full potential of the s3/android then it can...its silly to say just cause the s3 allows more options means it caters to differerent people...in reality the fact that it can be simple but offer more options means it caters to a much wider range of people then the iphone does..the 4s is in no way a bad phone but the s3 beats the 4s in nearly every department...the 4s won in the size and build quality but thats is opinion based but when it comes to multimedia, web browsing, spec etc the s3 is clearly better.

The trolls really came out in droves on this one. You aren't satisfied by anything other than direct iPhone bashing.
I'd pick iPhone 4 even over the SGS III
163. Mitchel (Posts: 228; Member since: 25 May 2012)
Mr. Ray S., i'm totally disagree with your conclusion.. You said that iPhone 4s are your needs if you want limited basic phone stuff like surfing the web, occasional social network check and maybe even playing a game every now and then..
I call it bulls**t! Only 10 - 20 & of Android users root their phone to install custom ROM, kernels and other tweaks.. Android users can make their phone simple as iOS but with more functional capabilities..
And as far as i know, SGS III has the best web browsing performance (according to you, and many reviews) on any smartphone today, you can play all Gameloft & EA HD & many intensive games with it, Social apps like Facebook, Twitter, Google +, Instagram, etc. is more integrated than iOS versions will ever be..

"Who should get the iPhone 4S? Apparently, those guys would be the kind of users who don't really pay so much attention to their smartphone, but still want something that's contemporary and reliable."
This sounds like a commercial for Consumer Cellular. I look forward to them adding the iphone to their line-up.

A status symbol? How is it a status symbol if so many people have it? Even the kid who sold a kidney for an iPhone now has one and he lives in a mud hut.
117. Nathan_ingx (Posts: 3012; Member since: 07 Mar 2012)
PA's probably going to wear black the day they realise iPhone has been beaten...but i don't know how long will that take!!
120. masi0 (Posts: 1; Member since: 19 May 2012)
It is almost 2 years since Apple have introduced iPhone 4 and let's say a year since 4s and what?
Samsung have introduced something that AT LAST have beaten Apple even the Apple's SoC is year old! This shows how good Apple is in inventing stuff and how weak other producers are as their key to success is a multicore CPU, big screen and inspiration taken from Apple. Is that how the phone market looks like?
PS. A5X is still a leader in graphics even the resolution is twice that big as in its competitors
126. osamalone (Posts: 12; Member since: 15 Feb 2012)
helo didnt you see the benchmarks s3 beats the iphone 4 and 4s

Talking about iPhone 4 and 4S, what stuff inventing?

Which phone Should I go for, since iPhone 5 would be out later this year with a bigger screen, I'm really on the edge on which to buy, I would be buying unlocked either way, So it would be possible to sell off and buy at the end of this year.
129. remixfa (Posts: 13910; Member since: 19 Dec 2008)
if your waiting to see what the i5 brings, then you shouldnt ask this question until after the i5 is OFFICIALLY announced, since rumors cant be trusted.
If the biggest change in the i5 is apple maps and a 4 inch screen, is it enough to keep you? What are you looking for in your next phone? These devices are so different you need to really think about it.

If you are using a Galaxy can you facetime with someone using an iphone? Using google talk I suppose on the Galaxy?
128. remixfa (Posts: 13910; Member since: 19 Dec 2008)
there are other apps like skype, Gtalk, or fring that should be able to do it. facetime is a specific apple only app, but its not the only app that can do it.

SGS2 is better than Iphone 4S, so of course SGS3 is also better than iphone 4S , no doubt. Let`s wait iphone 5
