Samsung Galaxy S III vs Apple iPhone 4S
0. phoneArena 18 May 2012, 08:41 posted on
Always a difficult decision, choosing between the latest and greatest Android phone or the latest and greatest iPhone is a problem that every smartphone user faces at one point or another. Having both the Samsung Galaxy S III and Apple iPhone 4S here with us, we thought that we absolutely have to pit these two ambitious guys against each other in order to make it easier for you to determine if you are more of a Galaxy S or iPhone user...

dumb comment if you are going to post make sure you post something interesting. back to topic the galaxy S3 brings more to the table with their new added features, and of course it has higher specs overall.
3. bobfreking55 (Posts: 866; Member since: 15 Jul 2011)
wait, don't you think you should have included the camera software functions of the SIII? Hmm...
5. Yummy (Posts: 117; Member since: 28 Mar 2012)
THE IPHONE 4S IS THE BEST PHONE EVER! Jk Jk lol now that I have your attention, I really think it is just a matter of opinion. I would prefer the galaxy s3.
159. ajac09 (Posts: 1447; Member since: 30 Sep 2009)
and thats it it is ALL a mater of opinion. apple and android and windows and black berry fans all will find a reason to stay with what they like.
6. PackMan (Posts: 277; Member since: 09 Mar 2012)
Firstly, I choose Samsung Galaxy sIII.
And i think these reviews are pretty shallow, phonearena should go for in-depth reviews.
7. rallyguy (Posts: 620; Member since: 13 Mar 2012)
Well this whole article is opinion. The reason companies keep making different phones is because different people want different things out of a phone.
But if you stick to specs and current trends, I think it's hands down the GSIII is the more desirable phone. I wouldn't buy either one personally, but I'm the minority with that statement.
8. KingShango (Posts: 89; Member since: 16 May 2012)
I think the conclusion sums things up nicely. Both phones have pros and cons and its up to the consumer to decide what's best for them. Personally I'm not i love with the whole "giant screen" trend so the GS III is out for me. Maybe a One S...

You're absolutely right. They should start paying me for reviews. Great idea, thanks.
9. remixfa (Posts: 14255; Member since: 19 Dec 2008)
great review. I was interested to see just how you wrote this up.
one nit pick though is on the syncing..when comparing the 2 you completely neglected the sgs3 's ability to use Google drive to back up everything, the fact that Gmail has always synced contacts or that g+ auto syncs your pix to privace folders online. the Samsung cloud services are not necessary.
12. bloodline (Posts: 704; Member since: 01 Dec 2011)
You should replace ray, I am not even joking.
Phones arena you should hire this guy
14. KingKurogiii (Posts: 5688; Member since: 23 Oct 2011)
well the iPhone has iCloud and the iPhone can take advantage of Gmail and G+ features like that.
19. maryaaadil (Posts: 146; Member since: 07 Apr 2012)
Why do you guyz bother cloud when you have microsd card slot with support up to 64gigs
I think 64+64=128 gigs are enough for a phone even if you wanna play games like GTA IV on it
people can call me mad but as a matter of fact we can't enjoy as much privacy with (i)cloud than a SD card
38. KingKurogiii (Posts: 5688; Member since: 23 Oct 2011)
because content in the Cloud is accessible from anything that'll take your password. phone, tablet, laptop, pc. it's available anywhere.
54. taz89 (Posts: 2014; Member since: 03 May 2011)
but what use is the cloud if you are not always guaranteed decent speed? not hating i use drive and dropbox but sometimes it is useless when i cant get decent speed where as with a sd card or built in memory, its always there regardless of your connection speed...cloud is not perfect but is great as you said its available if you got the connection and speed .its why i always buy phones with sd card slot.
89. KingKurogiii (Posts: 5688; Member since: 23 Oct 2011)
you're right it's not guaranteed but if you're using a network like Verizon's 4G LTE or T-Mobile's HSPA+ then you'd just about think it is and besides most cloud services allow you to download your content so you don't HAVE to waste space on your phone with movies and music and such but you can if you want to.
116. maryaaadil (Posts: 146; Member since: 07 Apr 2012)
I am in India and where i live i have no 3G service..........
BTW I used cloud through WiFi but that was damn slow. So, no sd card slot is a deal beaker for me..
135. KingKurogiii (Posts: 5688; Member since: 23 Oct 2011)
okay, so use your SD Card. whatever man. the Cloud is useful for some and not useful for others.
136. remixfa (Posts: 14255; Member since: 19 Dec 2008)
exactly. Useful for me, useful for u... were in 4g heaven. I wouldnt sync if i was on 2g all the time.. lol.
137. KingKurogiii (Posts: 5688; Member since: 23 Oct 2011)
good god man, you'd think they believed we were trying to force them to use the cloud and nothing else wouldn't you?
177. DanMarino13 (Posts: 63; Member since: 22 Feb 2012)
The 4G LTE markets and man, i'm not even sure why you mention T-mobiles HSPA+, don't cover a majority of markets yet. Even then, you use more data on 4G and HSPA+, and nearly every carrier is not unlimited data, so you are just asking for overage charges on data usage.
63. remixfa (Posts: 14255; Member since: 19 Dec 2008)
exactly. and if someone steals my phone that's synced, I haven't lost a byte of info.. if someone steals your phone that u don't sync anything with.. you lost everything.
77. chapizzo (Posts: 116; Member since: 13 Sep 2011)
you know you can sync your phone with your computer as well right? What are the chances you lose both at the same time?
84. remixfa (Posts: 14255; Member since: 19 Dec 2008)
ive been working in the industry for a while now and the one thing i can say, is that almost no one backs up their phone to their computer. iOS is/was fragmented to all heck and back because of the old requirement of having to wire it up to iTunes to get updates and do back ups, regardless of how much the media ignores it... RIM and WM5/6xx both had computer back ups and no one used them either.
Syncing is thought free. It just happens and you dont need to worry about it.
141. tedkord (Posts: 7593; Member since: 17 Jun 2009)
I used Activesync to back up my WinMo phones to my PC back in the day.
178. DanMarino13 (Posts: 63; Member since: 22 Feb 2012)
The amount of customers that come into Best Buy and don't know if they have icloud or how to use it is staggering. Most consumers don't know to do either one, you should try being less biased.
85. PhoneArenaUser (Posts: 5498; Member since: 05 Aug 2011)
Cloud will in increase your payments because of huge traffic!
Also what you gonna do with your Cloud when there is no internet connection?
90. KingKurogiii (Posts: 5688; Member since: 23 Oct 2011)
well then don't lose Internet Connection there babe or is that just too much to ask? ;P
the point is you have your stuff available if you want it. you're not obligated to use it but you can have more available to you when you have a solid Internet Connection which i'm not worried about on Verizon.
101. PhoneArenaUser (Posts: 5498; Member since: 05 Aug 2011)
What about the payments because of huge traffic?
What about internet speed?
Not all world use Verizone.
You also can use SD card in your Laptop or PC so, that's not a problem.
Smartphone use more power while downloading content from the Cloud it will faster drain battery.
107. remixfa (Posts: 14255; Member since: 19 Dec 2008)
I dont use VZW
Tmobile's plans are way way cheaper and give more.
hard cable syncing still takes thought from the user
hard to argue the battery part, but chips are getting better, so phones are lasting a bit longer with each generation.
109. KingKurogiii (Posts: 5688; Member since: 23 Oct 2011)
well then don't use it.
i have unlimited data, i can use 4G LTE and i'm not being charged to keep my data accessible from anywhere at anytime without actually having to take up my physical storage space so why not?
110. chadrick0814 (Posts: 208; Member since: 23 Nov 2011)
Do you have verizon when you're on a plane? When flying, I would think that is the time you want access to your data the most. You could pay the airline $7 for 15 minuts of wi-fi. However, if you're flying overseas, airlines don't have wi-fi over the ocean. Speaking of overseas, how well does verizon's CDMA network work outside of the continental US? The iphone now has the two antennas which is good. Its a good thing they are all rich because dowloading/streaming from the cloud while roaming has to be expensive. Now, aren't you glad you have the GSIII with both cloud access and a large amount of extended memory!
113. KingKurogiii (Posts: 5688; Member since: 23 Oct 2011)
then download your data before you go. there's a time and place for cloud data just like there is for everything else. your plane example was as dumb as asking someone why they have games on their phone if they go to work.
143. KingKurogiii (Posts: 5688; Member since: 23 Oct 2011)
oh i see. you guys think i'm an iOS user huh? xD
106. remixfa (Posts: 14255; Member since: 19 Dec 2008)
most of the syncing options that take real data like G+ and such, you can set to "automatic on WIFI only". Problem solved. :)
171. jaydee (Posts: 3; Member since: 09 Jun 2012)
I have had various brands Samsung, Apple, Nokia and they all manage google mail.
67. Suts_97 (Posts: 124; Member since: 05 May 2012)
You are right bro, he didn't even mention about Google Drive.
162. Forsaken77 (Posts: 552; Member since: 09 Jun 2011)
I thought his comparison was terrible. It's like he was trying so hard to force out something good to say about the Android phone that literally wipes the floor with his precious iPhone. The GS3 is more than 3 times as powerful and feature packed. There is no comparison. This guy, Ray S., shouldn't be writing supposedly "objective" view points when he can hardly be objective. And it's not about "personal preference" in a head-to-head comparison. The GS3 wins, bottom line. This article is supposed to showcase the available features, most of which were left out of the GS3 part btw, and compare them against each other. This guy will never say anything is equal to, or better, than his iPhone and shouldn't be allowed to write these articles or reviews. The only thing he should be allowed to do is review the next iPhone, but even then you can't take it seriously because of his fanaticism.
11. remixfa (Posts: 14255; Member since: 19 Dec 2008)
you want the sgs3 unless: you barely use your smart phone, have Tiny hands, or are shallow enough to think that a phone is a status symbol that chicks care about (they don't).
25. andro. (Posts: 1990; Member since: 16 Sep 2011)
Agreed, the article pretty much states that also stating the iphone is the phone if you "don't reallypay attention to smartphone" and use your phone for "basic phone stuff with occasional browsing". Anything more can be too much for most ifans as their iphone is essentially to make them look "contemporary"
55. E.N. (Posts: 2577; Member since: 25 Jan 2009)
well to be honest, I think this review kinda sucked. This was more iOS vs Android than anything else and it was pretty generic (a little too much talk about customizing and widgets). If it was another reviewer, it could have easily gone the other way. And I think he was trying to please you Android folk because you guys basically criticize everything he does (he gave SGIII the upper hand in a lot and yet some of you are still complaining).
But anyway the SGIII is a pretty solid device, but I do wish it wasn't so ugly... I'm pretty hopeful that the iPhone 5 will destroy it though. If Apple delivers like they did with the original iPhone 4, it may be game over. This should get interesting.
68. remixfa (Posts: 14255; Member since: 19 Dec 2008)
he could have went into more detail. that is true. but as a quick overview it wasn't that bad.
apple needs to come out swinging for the fence with the i5. even this quickie review shows just how far behind apple is in many categories. the sgs3 preorders out pacing the i4s's total launch weekend sales really shows what the masses want. if the i5 doesn't bring it, iOS is going to lose a lit more market share. if it does bring it, it puts them back in the game.. not dominating.
59. taz89 (Posts: 2014; Member since: 03 May 2011)
iphone is great for people who dont like to customise there phone to make it there own and all they really do is browse the web, play some games,fb etc but arguably the experience of these things is actually better on the larger screen. iphones is a great phone(had the 4 myself) but personally for me it is very basic at everything it does and doest really push itself...one thing that annoys me with android vs ios reviews is that everyone keeps saying android is too hard and ios is simple but the simple matter is somethings in android is way easier on android due to widgets and its sharing capabilties but android itself is simple out the box and there are more things you can do with it if you want to but you dont have to...you can use android just as basic as ios out the box,the only difference is if you want to you can do more but the fact is you dont need to use those extra features to use android.
78. gallitoking (Posts: 4704; Member since: 17 May 2011)
and you still dont know why PA would not hire you remix.. wow
94. taco50 (banned) (Posts: 5506; Member since: 08 Oct 2009)
You were doing good, but had to resort to your iPhone bashing. Why?
Why can't you just accept iPhone is a good phone that people like and for some it's a better fit than android?
108. remixfa (Posts: 14255; Member since: 19 Dec 2008)
All I did was sum up the article. Try reading it, you will find every bit of what I just said, right in it.
167. MartyK (Posts: 732; Member since: 11 Apr 2012)
hahahahahaha! you need 3 thumbs up for this one..hahahaha
15. Yummy (Posts: 117; Member since: 28 Mar 2012)
You guys are harsh on Ray. Every Person has their own opinion and besides..... We all know which phone is better right? Lol
17. kshell1 (Posts: 1143; Member since: 05 Oct 2011)
Good job Ray, your starting to impress me with your reviews.
18. darac (Posts: 2156; Member since: 17 Oct 2011)
Such a failed article!
Conclusion at the end is delusional.
With that attitude, why not compare the SIII with Emporia phones for elderly people and conclude that it all depends on what you need, so there's no clear winner.
You can't relativise the fact that, in a fair comparison, SIII blows the 4S out of the water.
It is proven in countless examples that android is actually EASIER to use, way more functional, more intuitive than iOS, (all things equal regarding the performance) even for a light user.
31. Ray.S (Posts: 280; Member since: 19 Jul 2011)
The Galaxy S III and iPhone 4S are more or less direct competitors. The Emporia phones that you give as an example are created for an entirely different demographic.
Note that I didn't say that the iPhone isn't for real smartphone users that do a lot of stuff on their devices. I just said it isn't the open and tweakable platform that Android is. But if you're OK with doing things in a strictly controlled way (the Apple/iOS way), you can do tons of stuff on an iPhone, using its applications. Meanwhile, if you want to do things your way, only Android can make this possible, because it gives you the freedom to do so.
71. remixfa (Posts: 14255; Member since: 19 Dec 2008)
so the big question is which phone would you buy with your own money ray? ;)
80. gallitoking (Posts: 4704; Member since: 17 May 2011)
which one would you buy. the iphone 4S or the "crapdragon" version fof the SGSIII?
83. PhoneArenaUser (Posts: 5498; Member since: 05 Aug 2011)
I'm not remixfa and I also wont buy Samsung Galaxy S III, but if I would, I would buy Samsung Galaxy S III with Exynos 4212.
