Samsung GALAXY W ReviewSamsung GALAXY W 7.5
The camera interface offers the usual for TouchWiz broad selection of shooting modes, scenes and effects, as well as touch focus, macro mode, and even blink detection. The phone doesn't run the latest Android Ice Cream Sandwich, but we do have a Panorama mode courtesy of TouchWiz, and Samsung also added the hilarious Cartoon one.
The pictures turned out decent in terms of color representation and detail, but a bit too soft for our liking. Shot-to-shot times are quick outside when the preview function is off, but in more challenging conditions, such as low lighting or close-ups it takes 5-6 seconds for the GALAXY W to focus and capture the next shot. That is annoying at times, and can make you miss important moments.
taking videos, the Samsung GALAXY W can capture 720p footage at 30 frames per second, which is the current norm for midrange Android handsets. The video clips have balanced contrast and colors, and the frame capture is smooth without skipping.

Samsung GALAXY W Indoor Sample Video:
The stock Android music player is all you get on the GALAXY W, but it serves its purpose without a hitch. What's more is that it supports the FLAC lossless audio format, which means that you can enjoy your tunes without sacrificing quality. The loudspeaker is quite strong, but the sound comes out a bit tinny and distorted.
When it comes to video playback, 720p videos played seamlessly, and we have DivX/Xvid video formats support, along with the traditional MPEG-4, which many Samsung handsets except the lowest-end ones feature. The video player allows you to adjust screen brightness and sound volume directly from its interface.

so you took away probably 1 or 1.5 points just for the camera being a little slow? the calling part i understand due to it being a cell PHONE

Cameras have always been nice to have but overall just a optional function for me. Now I could understand if it had really bad picture and video quality but a little slow to focus? That doesn't seem like a understandable con if you ask me.

Why samsung is releasing more phones with very few differences or nothing.

I think its their marketing strategies.

this phone should sell pretty well. not a fan.
please make phones with good voice, data, lcd, and camera over to attention to detail items like looks, or build quality manufacturers!

Quote: "Voice quality in the earpiece is below average, with muffled voices, hollow sound and insufficient volume".
This is really dissapointing. This is a phone, right?
Just one question. Could it be the earpiece, or is it the phone itself?

How about its battery capacity? Does it last a day?
9. Crispy54 (Posts: 1; Member since: 27 Nov 2011)
This is a fine phone except for the on/off button placed on the side - I'm always hitting it by accident! As for the soft-focus camera, did you notice the lens is covered by (a small and difficult to remove) plastic film? Took me while to notice it but since taking it off I think the photos are pin sharp.

How on earth can you give a PHONE with such a fundamental flaw as BAD CALL QUALITY get such a high score? Such an issue means that it can't possibly deserve the same as a similarly priced Xperia Neo.
Even more ridiculous than that, the similarly priced Xperia Pro has been given a lower score by PhoneArena than this?!!! WTF?!!!! Xperia Pro has no issues with call quality, has a better camera and with the addition of the truly excellent hardware QWERTY keyboard which is superior for text-input than touch-screens.

Probably because of the fast 1.4GHZ processor , slimmer body , bigger interbal memory , touchwiz 4.0 , game hub and social hub??

No NFC? Why? I think this phone is very well, but just one minus.. NO NFC...

I have had this phone for a month. When I first the phon ei would have to agree with your 4/5 rating. After a month of using it not downloading anything or taking up any of the memory the phone is slowing down more and more every day and it can't comprehend opening or closing things and merely crashes the majority of times this is the second Samsung galaxy w I have had now after I sent the other one off to repair and again same problem.
Initial week of usuing the phone it should get a 4/5 but after a week a 1/5 if that.

isn't that a problem with android itself?
so what's your phone now?
i'm looking for a new one.
17. Vyker (Posts: 3; Member since: 05 Dec 2011)
I've had this phone for a month now, and I've got to say its fantastic.
The reports on poor phone quality are hard to justify, for me its been fantastic...
The speed of the phone is where it really shines, the 1.4ghz clearly makes a difference, there is no lag at all with the UI or any of the apps. You have to really push it for it to slow down.
The Camera is also very good, the results when I view on a computer screen are impressive, there is a slight delay as it auto focuses, but its nothing more than any other phone on the market. [The real winner in this area is the Palm Pre2, instance autofocus and shots, even faster than the iPhone4]
The phone is so light as well, when you're using the phone, playing a game or such, the weight really helps. On my old phone, playing a bit of Angry Birds and I'd get tired holding up the phone when lieing flat, but with this, barely know its there!
The future is bright for this phone, if you don't want the much larger SII, and just want a pocket-able phone, this fits the bill perfectly.
I've compared it to the Desire S, and though the Desire S feels heavy and well built, it just didn't perform as well as the Galaxy W.
I recommend this phone!

Hi to all of you.... Can someone describe me this phone a little bit detail... I want to bouy it so.. Does this phone have Gorilla Glass? Is there any bug? How the screen is compared with amoled screen (colours and stuff like that)? Is it worth to buy? When you use it, is there a plastiky feel, or is high-quality.... Sorry for my English :P
22. Vyker (Posts: 3; Member since: 05 Dec 2011)
It doesnt have Gorilla Glass, but it has Samsungs own version of toughened glass. The glass is the best I've used personally, it is very slick, smooth, and never gets dirty.. fingerprints dont ruin it. It is also scratch resistant.
The screen is fantastic, the high density ppi makes a big difference. Websites look great on it.
It is worth buying, as they are so cheap for good performance. as cheap as £200 now.
It does feel plastic'y, as it is a light phone. Very light in fact. But the plastic'y feel is not a cheap feeling. It still feels ok. Nothing like the Desire S, which felt very heavy and premium. This is the opposite.

Does anyone know if and how you can change the way to unlock the phone when you press the unlock button on the side of the phone?
if you do not know of I mean, look at this in the youtube clip from about 2:17 to 2:35.
sorry for my bad English.

The lock is part of TouchWiz.
You can install other Launcher apps like Go Launcher EX and that will replace the home screens, app menu and lock screens.
Personally, I think TouchWiz is fine, its not the best, but it does the job. It's nice to know that there is other options for me out there when i get bored with TouchWiz.
I've used ADW Launcher in the past, and it was very good. So I might move to it later.

Hi there… I bought this Samsung Galaxy W two weeks before from this prepaymania.co.uk. I got a really good deal there. It doesn’t have a Gorilla Glass. It doesn’t have a stunning Super AMOLED display, but a competent LCD screen with a nice resolution, good clarity, and smooth touch and can tap, swipe, pull and pinch to navigate around phone. Kies allowed me to sync my phone with my PC. Its android so I am having fun with all those apps, games and songs that I could download through it. It connects well with wifi and Bluetooth. Plus the 5 megapixel camera is good too. The exterior of the phone is cool but yes it is made of plastic. Though from distance no one can make out as it has got metal finish. But I would say it’s a best buy for me for this money.

Bad call quality?
This is a massive lie. This phone has great call quality. I can hear the other person very good, the reception is excellent and I can be heard clearly and loudly enough.
Maybe they had a bad unit or whatever but don't doubt in this phone, especially in the earpiece/microphone. It's a great phone and the price is so freaking low. Best phone for it's price hands down.

what phone model do you have wherein all incoming messages are dierctly saved to the memory card not on the phone memory. And adding new contacts should be saved also to the memory card. Because once you changed your phone, you have nothing to worry deleting your contacts and messages, if all your messages and contacts are saved on the memory card. thanks

i am in desperate need of a new phone for work.. is this phone fast? does it have good email function? do messages come through alright? and most important how long does the battery last? more than 8 hours?
33. cliffy (Posts: 2; Member since: 21 Jan 2013)
First using this phone seems ok for the first week, beyond that when you actually install apps etc it becomes a frustratingly slow piece of junk, the screen is great as is the camera, but dont even think about games on this, it just wont happen, it will crash everytime. Things like skype and messanger send it into overload and it will crash often, you will also be pressing that clear memory button ALOT! Swipe text is a Godsend for sure, but even then it can slow down, one core cpu just does not have the grunt for this phone and OS. I have nearly thrown the phone at the wall a few times and have never been so frustrated with a phone before, it has good features but the speed and lack of memory will completely infuriate some people me included. If you dont ask much from the phone it should be ok, but it always feels way underpowered and buggy crashy. Which is a huge shame, and the first Samsung phone I have actually hated :(
I forgot to add battery life, I dont know what drugs others are on but I can assure you this phone chews through battery life like pacman on a hunger strike, I am forever charging it at my desk and cant really go for more then 5 hours without charging it, a huge let down.
And to confirm during the day I have one exchange account running and message through skype, say good bye battery!

As per my comment above, I have found the issue with this phone, I rookited my phone last night and found the cpu sits pretty much most of the time at 245mhz and goes to 1.4ghz when needed, its this low start speed that is causing the slowdown in menus etc, I installed set speed from the market place and set the lowest speed to 800mhz which has elimanated the painful scrolling speed and changing in and out of apps speed, also my phone has stopped crashing, so if you buy this phone I highly recommend rooting it and installing set speed app and setting the lowest speed to 800mhz, after that you will have a good phone!!!
