Nokia Lumia 928 vs Apple iPhone 5

0. phoneArena 21 May 2013, 07:45 posted on

Now that Nokia has introduced its true high-end Windows Phone offering for Verizon Wireless, it’s sure to try its mightiest to chip away at the iPhone 5’s always stringent grasp. Considering that it’s sporting a competitive price point of $99.99 with a 2-year agreement, there’s no arguing whatsoever that the aggressive approach might actually make customers think twice about settling down on a device – even more when it’s packing goodies that the iPhone lacks, such as wireless charging, NFC, and a super sensitive display...

So, does that mean that Apple has a lock on the 8 year old phone owning population? I didn't know there were that many 8 year olds whose parents would get them a $200+ phone plus cellular plan.

The iPhone 5 looks umm "cute" compared to the 4.5-5" phones I would buy, but for my wife it'll be plenty big. Nobody should dismiss Apple for being highly appealing to that large and very lucrative segment of the market.

Even after all these facts.. iPhone 5 outsolds all of the windows phones.

they only outsold Windows because of their 70+ old people. Android and Windows. But we don't even need to wait till they die, soon their eye sight will be to bad to see the tiny screen

absolutely not true.... the Nokia 920 series for the first 4 months of introduction continuously on a weekly basis , outsold all iphone models combined at any point in history...

This is another Apple biased review, completely ignoring the WinPhone 8 voice assistance and inferring that Siri crap is the only game in town... also inferring that many critical apps are not available in wp8 which is a complete lie....

I think it would be nice to get a review from someone who actually knew what they are talking about when using windows phone.... I fell for that small screen Iphone crap for years and when I got a windows phone everything got a lot easier....

also this review ignored the fact that Apple continues to charge far more for their phones... no way I ever buy an Apple again

The funny thing is that two years ago, these two companies could not even compare, let alone be on equal terms, which shows how much Nokia has improved and innovated, while Apple stood still.

I think the 928 is a good phone, but when I see "spec" comparisons they don't mean alot in the real world.

For example- Android phones that have 2gigs of RAM - need it. Ever go into a store and try and Android phone with 1gig of ram ? They slow down and at times seem to "stick' for a second. The iPhone with 1gig of ram runs super smooth. This is what happens when you compare an operating system ( android ) that is 8Gigs large versus iOS which is only 3gigs. Android needs more RAM to run as smoothly..

Back to what I said in the 1st sentence at the top - In the real world a smartphone is an internet appliance. Turn off your data and all you have is a phone with a camera. Most people pictures are automatically downgraded to much lower then 8mp when they upload pics to facebook anyways. So what matters is apps apps apps - remember this is an internet appliance.

Apple store 800,000 apps versus 120,000 apps Windows. So while you can compare phone specs - again comparing specs of different platforms with Operating systems that have different requirements isn't really fair. IMHO Samsung has done a great job of marketing the S4 although no one needs more then 10 MP in a phone camera - a 5MP Camera can print a photo lab quality 8x10 picture.. How many do this from a phone ? Not that many..

Nokia L928 looks very smart, stylish, sexy, class aluminium, with a better camera than any other phones, except PV808.

iP5 great all rounder, wins in Cpu, Gpu, apps, games.but those ugly curves look hideous.

Both are great device in there own ways!

TBH, I wish they could have used the same LCD display they used on the 920. I personally think LCD's produce better colors, and while I haven't seen the 928 in action, I have seen the 920 and it's screen is amazing. I have no doubt they also put an amazing display on the 928, but in my experience at least, LCD's give a better reading experience (I read allot of books from my phone).

Now this I feel is a fair comparison. Of course when they pit the 928 against the Galaxy S4, PA will pick the Galaxy for its bigger screen, higher resolution, higher specs. Against the iPhone it's a more balanced fight. And like most of their comparos it comes down to preference.

To be truly fair though, they should pit the $300 32GB iPhone against the $100 32GB Lumia. That's a much tougher sell for Apple.

Which phone display isn't glossy? If glossy is objectionable, isn't that why you can purchase a matte screen protector? Plenty of matte screen protectors are sold for the iP5, I would think they are likewise available for the Lumia.

Innovative, huh?! So putting a new camera in a phone is real innovation. 928 is almost the same as 920, except the camera. And the camera isn´t as good as it should be, the pictures aren´t that great, wow they are on par or better as a 8 months old phone, awesome. Iphones wins in almost everything, except camera and display(if you like bigger screens and more saturated).

#IPhone 4S vs 5: Lighter + taller screen
#Lumia 920 vs 928: Lighter + better camera + bigger screen

Nokia Lumia 928 is real innovation compared to the iPhone? Nokia didn't know what hit them when Apple came up with the iPhone. Apple is the main cause of Nokia's decline. Nokia barely knew what a smartphone can do especially with Symbian - no ecosystem, no touchscreen, no apps, etc. You call Windows Phone 8 innovation? I admit hardware is nice but it won't justify a costly monthly data plan.

In short, Apple force Nokia, Samsung and other manufacturers to innovate. I agree that when the iPhone came out it was a sudden surprise and Apple did change the mobile industry. This force many manufacturers to change their strategy and learn from Apple. Now they have learnt and are innovating more than Apple. Apple is not bringing anything that much new compared to previous years, however manufacturers like Samsung and Nokia are trying to do their best bringing something new to the table. Most Windows Phone look same, Nokia can't change the UI. The only thing they can do is, improve the OS, bring some new Apps and improve on hardware side. They are doing that very well. However Apple could also surprise us again with new stuff and I believe they are smart enough to work on new technologies. What i don't like about the iPhone is the amount of unnecessary hype that it is getting. The iPhone 5 is great improvement to the previous iPhone, but it is nothing revolutionary. I don't hate the iPhone, it's just that as a consumer it does not appeal to me. I respect your choice as a consumer, and I hope if you have an IPhone, you're having a good time with it.

wp8 is , without a doubt, major innovation and a full generational step ahead of IOS... Apple is getting embarrassed on usability, business app integration, cloud services, gaming... basically everywhere..

Apple fanboys need to wake up and see what's happening, because people who have genuinely tried both in depth (which is very few people BTW)...know that Apple is getting their azz kicked

between these BS reviews where the author doesn't even know there is voice assist in wp8, and appleheads thinking they know what wp8 is about... you guys are hiding your heads in the sand

I also pointed out "siri" being a benefit.. Funny everyone i know with Siri hates it and it rarely works smoothly. Also what is this nonsense "various organizer function" that apple has and MS is lacking in..? Only lacking as you don't know how to use WP8 obviously. You lost me on that comment alone.

If ios7 isn't good Apple might start to lose customers. I know many people that are ditching their Iphone for Galaxies and I converted a couple of people to windows phone.

This review is VERY Apple biased.
I have an iPhone5 and a Lumia 920 (which is not even as good as the 928)

Example of clear bias in review.
1. They write:
"Having spent a great deal of time composing various texts and emails on the two,
we’ll vouch for their fantastic on-screen keyboards,
since they’re super responsive and offer some of the best auto-correct features"

Thats not correct, I have both the iPhone5 and the Lumia 920 that has the same auto correct as 928
And the Lumia drives in circles around the iPhone when it comes to auto correct.
The iPhone doesnt correct anything on tis own, you have to choose the right word.
The Lumia use a "sentence based auto correction system" which means that even if you dont get all the letters right it will automatically correct the faulty words based on the sentecne
you are writing NOT ONLY THE WORDS. You can be a slob and not look on the text and still get it right with the Lumia.
With the iPhone you have to check berfore sending or it might end up on a sms parody
site for Apple smses ;)

I generally don't comment a lot on forums but figured I would here.
First off Im a huge apple fan using all their products and have had iphones form the 3g up to the 5.

I own an iphone 5, Nokia 928 and an HTC DNA.

I love the iphone for its ease of use and simplicity. It is my preferred OS for business use.
The Win8 Nokia 928 is fun to use, easy to hold, NPC is fun (although not really useful), the larger screen is great, and the night camera shooting is amazing.
The DNA is the most stylish design in my humble opinion, amazing graphics for games and the HTC widgets are pretty cool.

I guess what Im saying is they all have their pros and cons but any of these phones would be perfectly expectable for everyday use. I am an apple guy but I do see the appeal of new and fresh operating systems and styles ( Id like to see an iphone about the size of the nokia 928 with a nice OS reboot.

Use what you want to use and dont worry about if the other guy doesnt like it cause their hung up on pop culture.

Battery - "Honestly, we don’t find one handset better at delivering longevity with their battery life, as we’re able to easily get through a solid day of normal usage on both smartphones. However, expect usage to be considerably less on both if you’re constantly connected via 4G LTE."

REALLY! Lets be REALLY HONEST about this. The Lumia 928 has TWICE the usage expectancy of the iPhone5s and YES, I CAN PROVE IT! Go to Verizon's website and compare the Lumia 928 to iPhone5s and look at the results. iPhone5s has 600 minutes of usage. Lumis 928 has over 1200 minutes of usage. So why would you say that you don't find one handset better at delivering longevity when it is CLEAR that the Lumia 928 has TWICE the longevity? Nice try Apple Fanboy, but Lumia 928 definitely WINS on this one!
