Nokia Lumia 720 Review

0. phoneArena 30 Apr 2013, 06:18 posted on

Announced at MWC 2013, which took place this February, the Nokia Lumia 720 seemed like a promising mid-range smartphone. Now that the handset has visited our office in all of its retail glory, we're eager to see if this Windows Phone junior can really be a worthy competitor to the Android horde.

This is a discussion for a review. To read the whole review, click here

Excellent?? Very good one but far away from excellent. Why slow HSPA speed 21mbps, and low res screen. 42speed and 720p screen can make this phone excellent mid range. I like battery size and camera even isn't a 8 Mp, don't needed to make right pictures.

People seem to forget the tag line : "Everyone can't have the same opinion." Anyways I rate it higher since its possibly better than any similarly priced android device which the 920 isn't. 920 does have some advantages over its other rivals, noticeably a super-sensitive screen and camera but its not quite as miles ahead of the competition when you'd buy a $600+ device. On the other hand, this for $350ish is better than any other phone in my opinion and so the best lumia running wp yet.

Starting from 2012, people start seeing much better and now they need full HD in a 5 inch screen.

The old days a 720p was enough for (>) 26 inch TV screen, now 1080p in 5 inch... the phone got 9 out of 10 because the resolution it has is enough if you don't use a magnifying glass to text message.

Hehe, one of the cons is Windows Phone 8 is not particularly fun? For real i don't know what does that mean but for me WP8 is more than fun, because it is WORKING, not like some andorid mashines :) I like the 720, we will see price in my country and than decide.

Windows Phone 8 might not be the most fun (whatever "fun" means) but it is certainly the least frustrating. I've tried all of the Smartphone OS's (except BB10) and WP is the only one that never tempted me to throw the phone into a brick wall.

The phone itself is pretty good. If you want to name any shortcomings, then most of them are due to the OS itself (and that points the finger at Microsoft), instead of Nokia. But WP still have a long way to go; the current age of WP is only equivalent of 2.3GingerBread of Android.

One can expect great things out of a legendary and previously, a brand owned by majority of the world. So do they, so they bash it down in words but they have to give the phone the score it deserves because it would be unjust to post personal score instead of professional ones in this case,

wp8 is not that bad. i just brought a lumia520(one of the sibblings of lumia720).i just say WOW.. We wont find any phone at this price point with this specs, thumbs up for nokia.
And as for wp8, it is very easy to use and very smooth. even though the store lacks a lot of apps, dont get me wrong it does have almost all important apps and they are well designed to match the os .
So don't fall for bad comments from crazy fanboys about windows phone.
I am not saying it is better than android, in my opinion android is way ahead of wp and ios, in terms of features. but i think average user doesn't care about feature counts.
In the end, its about personal preferences some choose android some choose wp and some choose ios. each os have its own pros and cons.

WP8 isn't fun to use? Hmm, I wouldn't go that far. I find it more of a "joy" to use compared to Android, but I still prefer android for customizability and just being more versatile in general. But I feel a certain "flow" when I use WP8 that I don't get while using Android. Idk, I've always liked WP. It's definitely a good OS for md-rangers like this one.

WP is far from perfect, but it's the easiest and least frustrating OS to navigate. All it needs is a real notification menu and a few more "major" apps and games and I'm smitten.

"What? If you've been expecting our enthusiastic tone to continue through the Interface part as well, you're in for a small disappointment. Not because there's something wrong with the Lumia 720 itself, but because we're simply treated to the same old Windows Phone UI, which is different from the competition, but not necessarily in a good way."

This applies to basically every OS WHEN A PHONE IS RELEASED WITH THE SAME OPERATING SYSTEM!

-same old iPhone UI, which is different from the competition, but not necessarily in a good way.

-same old Android/TouchWiz/Sense/LG/Moto UI, which is different from the competition, but not necessarily in a good way.

-same old Symbian UI, which is different from the competition, but not necessarily in a good way.

-same old Bada UI, which is different from the competition, but not necessarily in a good way.

-same old BB10 UI, which is different from the competition, but not necessarily in a good way.

-same old WebOS UI, which is different from the competition, but not necessarily in a good way.

I've done the work for you. Now all you have to do is copy and paste thes lines into your review articles (past and present) about new phones that use the same OS, same OS version, therefore, should have the same UI.

Way to kick Windows Phone while it is trying to get up.

Really considering getting this phone, seeing as it has a better design than the 920. Only problem is the 512 ram. Not enough for heavy games. It would've been perfect if it had at least 1 gb of ram. Also on the design section, you wrote "prove" and it's suppose to be "proof".

I stopped caring about Lumia's but this high rating caught my attention. The specs for this phone are weak, especially the resolution of the screen, which is laughable! However, the overall build seems very good and i think the rating might be justified since this device has a low price-point, so the raw power isn't being judged here but rather an introductory smartphone to the casual user (non-gamers and not for professionals, app geeks, etc)

Consider the following: while the resolutions it has is enough for a normal use and pixelization isn't noted, it allows a faster and smother operation because it has less pixels to deal with.
So... sufficient resolution = faster and smother OS.

Disappointed of the 480p screen.
But let's do the Math. S3 Mini vs Lumia 720.
Less lag. Less stutter.
Cool Live tiles.
No Wp feels like a laggy cheap phone.
Integration of Microsoft's services.

But then again S3 mini and Lumia 720 are from different price groups. In my country one can get S3 mini for some 350 bucks. Rumours are Lumia 720 will be considerably higher.

@pedr0x... Yes, and what about Android? What makes it better? Customization? What are you customizing? If the 720 got a 9, its a good phone. Look at the Sony experia ZL. It got an 8 or Samsung galaxy young, a 6. So what is your Android gonna do?

As my name suggests, I totally adore my L920. Package the features of this phone into the 720 shell and you have a sure fire winner. I was an Android user from the beginning and I have never had an Android device which didn't lag. Even the beautiful HTC One lags, as I experienced recently in the local 3 store. I loved the fact that you could customise Android to your hearts content, but I honestly think that having endless options for customisation effectively becomes boring. Let's face it, you change your wallpaper, you re-arrange your icons / widgets, you sit back and look at your homescreen and within 5 minutes you want to change it again. Why? Because nothing is happening, unless of course you have a laggy live wallpaper. WP8..the homescreen is alive with animations and the phone doesn't lag. I can't stop looking at my Lumia. The phone and the software are truly beautiful. It is a matter of opinion and I appreciate that many Android fans will not agree with me, but I am noticing on here a shift in attitude towards WP8. It does have an appeal for most people, and I'm sure that if Microsoft chooses to address some of the OS shortcomings for die hard Android fans, WP8 will truly lift off to another level.

Why PA reviewer will come out with this kind of subjective cons.....

Maybe PA/Ray S should put a "Boring/outdated UI" in iPhone 5 review or "Same Boring Design" in S4 Review........

As an ex Symbian User (costumizable/Widgets/Icons/home screens) and I have been used my new Nokia Lumia 920 and can say that I disagree with most of all that this review say about Lumia 920 Design and Windows Phone 8. First of all, day by day I like more and more of the simplicity of WP8, new beautiful and usefull apps appears everyday. I had a lot of devices and smartphones and none of them is so confortable to use as my Lumia 920, to me. The Screen is awesome, gorgeus and etc. and the camera enjoys me so much. Windows Phones is easy and beatiful, has a lot of the lacks and flaws, but it is still much young and will be better in a short time.

@LumiaLover

You're right about the Android customization - it really does get boring in the long run.

What comes to app availability, it's quantity over quality with Android. There are millions of apps of which only a small fraction are actually usable or serve any purpose.

720's design looks nice and refreshing.

We have SGN Note 1 and S3 in the family, but I wouldn't mind "upgrading" them to the Lumia series (720, 820 & 920).

I already had a Nokia Lumia 720.

I really hated Lumia'a before cause I thought it was boring as also heard by rumors.
but, all of these perceptions has changes when I bought a Lumia 720 for my self.
Who would have thought that someone could get Nokia's SLIMMEST phone by far in the Finnish company's history in the Mid-Range Level. It's a kind of a phone that will give you the touch of luxury.

Truth, you cannot change Lumia's launcher cause it's only designed for Windows but this feeature gives it a HUGE barrier of being a "copycat". Lumia is unique as well as the existing windows phone in this generation. For a mid-range price no one can ever find a camera as excellent as Lumia 720 has. It is already packed with a 6.7 megapixel camera with a Carl Zeiss Optics. it also has a Dolby headphone music which is rarely equipped in modern phones today.

so in my suggestion, if you wanna be different. GET LUMIA 720! It's by far the best smartphone ever created in the mid-range level in this present times.

I've been using my 720 for two weeks and browsing the web is so slow it's painful. Pages usually take 10 seconds, or more, to load. It's driving me crazy!!! I wanted a phone with a big screen for web browsing. This is slower than my old 610! Browsing here actually reminds me of back when I had a Blackberry Bold 9780. I don't understand why I keep reading everywhere that this phone provides a fast browsing experience. I don't get it!!!

Never purchase a mobile from Nokia if you purchase then you also have to suffer as I am doing after spending 19K on a nokia Lumia 720 mobile phone.
This Nokia Lumia 720 has changed 2 times by the company earlier.
Worth less customer care service Nokia provide in India.

No commitment - Nokia customer care executive make fake commitments and also they can try to misguide you because they asked me for 5 days for an issue and the thing is that talking with them from 1st of July 2014 but the Customer care executive booked my complain on 3rd of july.Actually I face froblem after upgraded software (Black).I called up to the nokia care centre received by Mr Dipanshu,Pradeep, and so many Cc executive of Nokia hired.Lastly on 5th of July again mr dipanshu on line and transfer to Mr ARVIND.Reply is as it is we will contact you with in 5 days. Then are notable to rectify the problem. They don't even given telephone number of the Sr. Managers number to whom I can discuss the issue.
Nokia care center is not able to repair device in single time with the perfection - If they fix a issue then they create another 2-3 issues in your device.
If you send mail to contactcentre.india@nokia.com regarding your issue then you will only receive one reply "Our customer care representative will make a call to you with in 5days. Hours" and It might be possible that you will receive a call after 10 days .After u sold ur defected phone to the market after facing lots of problem and harassment by the nokia people.
Never provide a satisfactory solution.
Time Wastage - They will waste your time by calling you in their nokia center without a single regulations.
Had done lots of followup in the different different way e.g. phone, email, visits but didn't get a single solution.
