Nokia Lumia 2520 vs Microsoft Surface 2

0. phoneArena 27 Nov 2013, 06:29 posted on

Windows RT tablets in general are a rare bunch nowadays, so we’re humbled to know that two of the best ones bring back light to the budding platform. They’re unbelievable tablets no doubt, especially for being Windows RT tablets, but which of the two can prove that it can outmuscle the other?...

Bought the Surface 2 and really enjoyed the performance as compared to my (original) Surface RT, but...

After buying the Lumia 2520 last week I returned my Surface 2 as the Lumia 2520 is just far better suited to my desires e.g. it's lighter, slightly smaller, somewhat smoother/faster, features a noticeably brighter/easier to see outdoors display, comes with fast LTE and NFC at no additionally charge, charges incredibly fast, is more ergonomically friendly, and includes Nokia's beautifully designed/functioning apps. Here! Maps & MixRadio FTW.

Make no mistake... They're both very nice tablets and run everything very efficiently, but Nokia simply produced a better product and unless the Surface's 'kickstand' is paramount, there's very little reason to buy the Surface 2 over the Lumia 2520, especially now that the (US 149.00) Power Keyboard is being offered as part of the US 499.00 purchase price.

My current dilemma is whether to (also) return the iPad Air a bought two weeks ago, though I do like having a 128gb tablet... Then again, I did install a 64gb microSDXC card in my Lumia 2520 (giving me around 72 gb for my music, pics and videos) and Windows Modern UI apps do tend to be much smaller in size than iOS equivalents.

Ok... Looks like my iPad Air will be returned this morning, and it's not like the iPad Air does/did anything remotely different, or even much better, than the iPad 4 I already have, and US 928.00 is really a ridiculous amount of money for such a limited device.

I agree, the 2520 was just the better choice for me. The LTE connectivity and the way it fit in my hands were the deciding factors. That being said, I do miss the usb port that I had on my Surface RT. Luckily, I found a 3.0 mini to usb 2.0 adapter online to solve that issue. Also, Nokia is giving away the keyboard cases on their website until January... so that is $150 saved for me.

One thing many reviewers have touted is the extra Nokia software. While some of it may be value add software like Nokia Here/Maps, Nokia Music, now Nokia Mix Radio after the update, is complete garbage without a paid subscription. The rest of the software looks completely useless and would be called bloatware on any smartphone. There have been a couple of reviews that have called it as such. Otherwise it's a nice tablet but you still dont have the kickstand and keyboard...

I think I'll be waiting for the 4G LTE Surface Pro 2 coming early next year as it sounds like Windows RT wont be around much longer.

"even Qualcomm said that the Lumia 2520 is a better choIce than the the surface 2"

That's your argument?! Really? Perhaps you should familiarize yourself with which companies made the processors for these tablets.

That's cute.

Surface Pro because I can tether LTE to anything thanks to unlimited data. USB 3.0 and keyboard is the reason why I'd get it thank you very much. Now sit down and look stupid.

I would agree - exept with the Surface you geht 1 year Skype International Calls for free and 200GB SkyDrive fort 2 years. Out of the Box.

Especially with the Kickstand I do go with the Surface (who cares the Can on a Tablet?) but, Style and possibilities with the more poweful Snapdragon make it a close Photo-Finish I think. Great Tablets anyway, just typing on one ;)

I think the new Nokia tablet is going to sell very well because it has a sleek design and has 4G connectivity. the Nokia Design is like the Apple Ipads and most of the Android tablets which are designed to be held in your hands where as the surface 2 design is more of a Tablet or table top portable computer. you can put it on your lap but most people will not do that. Next year the MS Surface 2 gets 4G however if it costs more than the Nokia 2520 in it's 4G model the Nokia 2520 will sell sell well enough because it will be a cheaper .4G windows 8.1 touch screen apps only tablet.

I keep on wanting the 2520 more and more... How many RT apps are there in the store exactly? I'd be cool with sth like 1000+ because i'm mostly looking for a multimedia (movies,e-books nd stuff) device for the time being...

The Windows Store has around 120 000 apps and games. You can search for the website version of the store and look for the apps you want.

I have been looking for a long time for the right tablet for me. I really like the Nokia 2520 . i like the processor better. I do prefer Qualcomm over Nvidia . Unfortunately the Nokia 2520 doesn't come with WIFI only and that is a deal breaker . I have no use for the 4G data. I will continue to wait and see what will come out next.
