Motorola DROID X vs. Apple iPhone 4
0. phoneArena 12 Jul 2010, 09:31 posted on
Just like the original Motorola DROID, the DROID X is presented as one of the smartphones to challenge the might of Apple's iPhone by attacking some key areas where the iPhone has been unable to capture. From a design standpoint, we have to give credit to Motorola for being able to craft a sleek ...

Droid X = Big & Ugly iPhone 4 = Pretty & Fragile Either is a good choice though.

whats so good about iphone? personally, 3gs looks better anyway! but droid x is better than both :)

My problem is I don't see a comparison between galaxy S and others. Is it because you are waiting for US versions, if so then fine, but if not then phonearena is really beginning to get on my nerves

Maybe the X is coming after the IPad? It may seem large, but it is maybe a way for Att users to see even though Verizon does not have the Iphone, they do have a very viable option on a much better network?

You have the audacity to call this a review and not once do you mention the iPhone's purported issues regarding antenna performance. Not once. What you failed to mention are a multitude of reports suggesting the iPhone 4 has a faulty antenna design and how this might relate to the significant drop in signal caused by capacitive interference (human touch) at the junction between the two antennas that comprise its antenna system. Although the external antenna system used in the iPhone 4 may be prone to said interference, it is the particular design whereby this gap or junction is in close proximity to the heaviest part of the left palm during normal use. Some test have shown this to result in a -24dB drop in signal strength (http://www.anandtech.com/show/
3794/the-iphone-4-review/2). In my opinion, this capacitive interference couples the antenna system thereby detuning the 2G/3G portion. In parallel, energy is also lost into the hand given the proximity of the EXTERNAL antenna system during normal use (gripping by hand) If you happen to live in an area where the signal strength is less than -94dB and you then hold the phone normally in the left hand, the call can be dropped as the signal drops below -113dB. This was reported by Anandtech, which observed a -20dB impact due to hand interference [-24dB when held tightly]. Whether -94dB resides within the fourth bar (currently) or is "programmed" down to the 3rd (or 2nd or even 1st) bar is a moot point. The only likely way around this for the iPhone 4, IMO, is with the rubber case/bumper. This serves to further separate the hand from the phone during normal use. Just my opinion.

not to mention the errors in the signal presentation, yellow spots on the screen, yellow tinted pictures, and melting ports. lol

YES! i say the same thing after every iphone comparison!

Not once did you mention that Apple held a conference and showed that only .5% of the users called in or had it reported in. That is probably all the users that had it to. Not once did you mention that the problem can be easily handled by slipping a case on the phone. Not once did you mention you can send the phone back to Apple, get another for free and get a case for free. Not once did you mention that most of the owners of an iPhone 4 don't experience this problem, only the people searching for it and even those that do don't experience most of the time.

The Droid x shoots video at 30 fps not 23 fps. Specs at motorola.com
11. PhoneArena Team (Posts: 240; Member since: 27 Jun 2006)
products/droidx/At HD 1280x720 the DROID X records at 24fps. You have to drop it down to 720x480 resolution to record at 30fps.

Blurays also play at 24 fps.... only a fanboy would tell you that 30 fps is "better".

-Funny how you can do flash, swype keyboard, hd recording, hdmi output.. but none of those things are seen as a benefit. -But every review some moron talks about a front facing camera that is probably never used... and needs WIFI. -And as above stated no mention of the fact that iphone has faulty antenna and signal glitches. -Also no benefit in how much larger the screen is on the DROIDX. -No benefit in the double microphone noise cancellation setup that works flawlessly on the DROIDX. *Phone arena, keeping the trendy trendy, and the uneducated making ignorant decisions since the orig iphone.

I agree, I was excited for an iPhone4 vs. Droid X review and after reading the review all I can say is I want those five minutes of my life back.

Just like most other phone bloggers PA is afraid to go against "common wisdom" and report the truth.
33. E.N. (Posts: 2578; Member since: 25 Jan 2009)
You guys are babies. Flash is not available until 2.2 and swype is not going to be a dealbreaker for anyone. HD recording is better on iPhone, and HDMI was mentioned in the review. Maybe it's just me but I didn't know that the iphone could do hdmi with proprietary cable. And in the end, I still don't care about HDMI. -FaceTime is only available on wifi but fring can be used on 3G. -they did mention many benefits of having a larger screen (did you even read the review or watch the video?) -the iphone has noise cancellation also -How many times do you guys have to read about the issues. It's been on every phone website, on the front page of websites like Yahoo/MSN, newspapers, TV, etc. On the HTC Evo review I don't remember there being talks about the light leakage issue. You guys just cry and cry and cry. If you look in other websites, I'm pretty sure the review is going to be almost the same. I guess every phone website just freaking hates the Droid X, right? Haha
34. BlackSirius16 (Posts: 84; Member since: 21 May 2010)
really? thats funny, I found much better reviews on youtube, and as for the light leakage issue on the evo, are your fucking seriously comparing that the the grip of death on the iPhone 4? holy shit omg I'm sure that when people got their brand new evo they started screaming, "Oh god jesus in heaven, theirs a small amount of light from the buttons leaking onto the bottom of my screen, its really a fucking deal breaker" holy smokey cinimon shit I;ve never heard something more stupid in my entire life christ your stupid. and as for flash, whens your iPhone gunna get it? yeah thought so retard. And I'd say that the hd recording on the iPhone has slightly better color capture but thats it, while the audio is so superior that its unbelievable. go fuck yourself fanboy troll bitch
38. Mightymack (Posts: 74; Member since: 16 Jul 2010)
i dont think that i can agree any more strongly! front facing camera is not all that! and if it is, then the evo can definatly beat the iphone!
10. adilly (Posts: 1; Member since: 12 Jul 2010)
Wow why do people visit this site if they hate it so much? I think the real question is rather or not the iphone is worth leaving Verizon for. At&t is just such a juxtaposition to apples core philosophy. Apple strives to be innovative and proactive in solving customer issues and relations, where as At&t is exactly the opposite. If you've ever had to deal with an at&t customer service rep you know that most of them are incompetent morons. The iphone is a great device, but it is limited by a sub par carrier who is only interested in making money and not furthering their customers experience.
12. cc16177 (Posts: 312; Member since: 09 May 2010)
"Apple strives to be innovative and proactive in solving customer issues and relations, where as At&t is exactly the opposite." SJ - "There is no reception issue. Hold your phone correctly." Need I say more? Both Apple and At&t apparently do not do a very good job when it comes to CS.
14. BlackSirius16 (Posts: 84; Member since: 21 May 2010)
I mean yeah, its a totally matter of opinion. Some people like phones that work well, and some people like phones that don't work at all but look real shiny.
15. cellstudent (Posts: 10; Member since: 21 Feb 2009)
I must say I'm disappointed with the analysis of the on screen keyboard. Why is the image of the iPhone keyboard LARGER than the image of the DROID X keyboard when the iPhone clearly has a much smaller display. You're making it look like screen real estate is less of a differentiator. Take a few side-by-side photographs of the keyboard and post them rather then the doctored up screen captures you're misleading everyone with!
18. PhoneArena Team (Posts: 240; Member since: 27 Jun 2006)
The size of the screenshots depends on the screen resolution, not the physical dimensions of the display. Motorola DROID X = 4.3" but 480x800 pixels resolution; Apple iPhone 4 = 3.5" but 640x960 pixels resolution, thus the image comes out larger once you view it on a computer.
20. narley (Posts: 357; Member since: 14 May 2009)
so back up a foot and take a picture of both phones physically as well as the QWERTY... because of you couldnt tell, in this comparison, size does matter.
24. sgtslayer321 (Posts: 36; Member since: 01 Oct 2009)
Actually the droid x is (854 by 480) not 800 by 480 just to be clear. For everyone that is hating on this review though, you should be glad that phonearena did one. I myself am a droid x man but will always be up for a comparison.
28. applesr4eating (Posts: 32; Member since: 01 Jul 2010)
How much does Crapple pay you for these reviews?
50. cellstudent (Posts: 10; Member since: 21 Feb 2009)
Which is EXACTLY why I suggested you take a few side-by-side PHOTOGRAPHS of the keyboard and post them. Software screen captures do NOT represent the reality of the massive differences between these two keyboards. Let's try a little intellectual honesty here, shall we? Your keyboard comparisons here lie somewhere between "misleading" and "fabrication." Break out that little SLR and post some PHOTOS of the phones side-by-side on the same screen-capture scenes used in your comparison please- or even just a few freeze-frames from your review video where you compare the real keyboard sizes on the two devices, really.

Where did they find these guys to review phones. They dont know crap, how can you say the apple store has betterquality apps than android and that wins over android??? Android has just as good apps if not better, yeah apple has more but about 10,000 i calculator apps, and another 10,000 is soundboards. Oh and they didnt mention pretty much all of apple's apps you have to pay for. Pretty much most of android apps are free, and thats a fact. Android wins in the app game! Oh apple has no widgets.. boring with no widgets.
16. becazican (unregistered)
I only visit this site for giggles never a fair review, they havent mention any of the issues that iphone is having, plus the consumer reports slammed this phone. the network is terrible. I am not a lover of verizon but you have to take their quality of service into account when you are comparing phones that are exclusive to these networks. I cant believe this site even gets advertising from anyone but apple or at&t. what a joke
49. omgoshphones305 (Posts: 19; Member since: 21 Jul 2010)
word...the concept of a "fair review" is about as equal as to the theory that we come from mars, as always blogs, forums, twitter, facebook, myspace, linked in, will always be the ultimate time wasters of people express their hatred of carriers/companies, and at the end of the day, they still take the mighty dollar from your pocket, unless of course you dont' ant to upset zeu's half distant god brother steve jobs who obviously has the power to make people "love iphone or die!" and just to referene the comment of apple's goal to be innovative, i do have to admit that yes the iphone did change the way we look at smartphones, and the company does strive to be innovative and fake rebel way, but at the same time, a company is still just a company...everything from the screen to the antenna is outsourced..american apple (pie) is about as equal as chinese/japanese/taiwenese/korean/indonesian/ wontons... but that's just my opinion
17. BlackSirius16 (Posts: 84; Member since: 21 May 2010)
also im pretty positive that the positive that thte processor is a 3640 not a 3630
22. BlackSirius16 (Posts: 84; Member since: 21 May 2010)
nevermind its a modified 3630. they modified the structure to allow for 1 ghz clocking. Apparently the reason they didn't do a 3640 was that the 3630 handles memory much faster. oh well its still sporting a processor that can mostly match the Samsung custom hummingbird processor.

The iPhone is called a phone because....? It doesn't seem like it works very well as a phone. You need duck tape, gloves, or a case to keep a solid connection and even with that the phone has bad call quality. iPhone+AT&T=FAIL Droid X FTW Now on an honest note, I wouldn't mind seeing an iPod version of the iPhone 4. I have an iPod Touch and as an iPod it's cool, but I wouldn't have an iPhone.
35. TonyTippins (Posts: 2; Member since: 16 Jul 2010)
I compare the iPhone to a Ferrari... Ferrari's have their faults.. But it's a absolutely fabulous car!!! A toyota Matiz on the other hand doesn't have any faults.. But it's still shit… and you'd feel a prat owning one.. … I think you see what I'm saying here... Hugs, Tony
42. Mightymack (Posts: 74; Member since: 16 Jul 2010)
haha you wish! think of as a ferrari vs a F1 Mclaren. we all know that ferrari's look better, but wich one serves the purpose of an exotic sports car better?? Mclaren is FASTER, and droid is BETTER! ...I think you see what I'm saying here...
43. TonyTippins (Posts: 2; Member since: 16 Jul 2010)
but Ferrari is a classic.. Mclaren is a plastic copy which dreams of being a Ferrari... and most importantly has 1% of the class.. .. i thin you see what i'm saying here.. again..
41. Mightymack (Posts: 74; Member since: 16 Jul 2010)
i personally think that the screen size for the X surpasses the resolution of the iPhone. would you rather have a 1080p 15in tv or a 720p 30in tv!? thats just how i look at it
44. istariphoenix (Posts: 1; Member since: 16 Jul 2010)
It's amazing how badly iPhone 4 sucks. Apple Fanboys will defend it until the end of time however. I will freely note first off that I have the 3GS, and I bought the 4. I returned it and went back to my current 3GS. It was that bad. It's hilarious to me what Apple fanboys are saying in forums and blogs all across the web, defending this thing like it's some sacred gem, pretending all its issues don't even exist. Ridiculous. Check out the video I made on YouTube about "An Apple Fanboy's take on Life...". It's athttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v

48. clevername (Posts: 1436; Member since: 11 Jul 2008)
Barring the flaws of these phones it was a decent review. Maybe an update to include the reception issues, which aren't a huge problem, just hyped, and the droids screen issues, which again not a huge issue, but probably won't get hype, would be prudent. I don't live in am area where I get bad AT&T service. My bars are always high and even when I death grip my phone I don't drop calls and my data rates stay at a high 3.4 mb/s, so I don't see that being an issue. I haven't ran into any other problems(I.e. Yellow spots that haven't been sighted in weeks, or proximity sensor problems). A Defective screen however should be a major problem on a device where the screen is it's largest selling point. Just my opinion however. That being said, I played with a droid x and effin love it. Call me an apple fanboy if u wish but I actually like both platforms and also own an N-1 running froyo. The droid x seems snappier in some areas than the n1 but froyo really adds a lot of pep. If the x had froyo it would be a beast. However after owning both platforms I still give the iPhone the edge. Yeah call quality isn't the best. And I know that just because I don't have reception problems doesn't mean they don't exist, but it seems to me a better experience. Easier syncing(even with ctrl p for android) better media player, better browser, better cam. But man every day I wish for widgets and better notifications. I do wish apple would wisen up to that. Well I'm done. Wonder how much hate I'll receive for this post :-)

iphone kills droid. Droid sucks verizon keeps making commercials that criticizes the iphone but yet iphone is still getting better sales. Droid is pathetic
52. ewatchu (unregistered)
waste of your llife to comment about a stupid phone , you are ALL just cows the are milked for money nobody care but about how to get your money and you are arguing about which company should milk you. haha ATT is gsm and Verizon is CDMA -- big differences in reception technology.
56. Bucks (unregistered)
You are absolutely right there. I would take a gsm razr over a CDMA droid.
60. N/A (unregistered)
That's because your a I phone ATT fanboy, and have never experienced the CDMA Droid X, and it ROCKS! ATT can kiss my @$$ and so can mac.
61. Switch (unregistered)
yeah! I had the Iphone and have now gone Droid X and will never go back to that restrictive phone. I'm not saying it's not a good phone it's just not a DOES phone and everything cost $$$. Android has hundreds of free apps that are useful and fun and did i mention free??
55. Chapm83 (unregistered)
Actually if you look at droid sales vs. Iphone sales....http://gcn.com/articles/2010/08/16/numerator-smart-phone-android.aspx... Or...http://crave.cnet.co.uk/mobiles/android-overtakes-global-iphone-sales-50000335/ So actually IPhone worldwide isnt doing IIISSSHHHHH
57. Anonymous2 (unregistered)
I think you forgot a little important detail: COST OF OWNERSHIP. You get unlimited data with the base droid plan and more texts, but you get a mere 200 MB with the Iphone. For the base plans, the droid x has a far better value. However, with the best plans, the Iphone 4 is a little bit cheaper that the droid x.
