Motorola DROID BIONIC Review
0. phoneArena posted on 10 Sep 2011, 04:40
It seems that Motorola has been doing some tweaking and tinkering during the long journey as the Motorola DROID BIONIC attempts to shed those associations seeing that it’s the thinnest and lightest of the bunch – while offering the highest capacity battery as well. Possessing a combination of impressive advanced functionality and wicked hardware under the hood, there’s no kidding that the handset is future proof.

i used to be a TW hater but after seeing the fourth iteration of it i became converted. it's actually really nice. my second choice behind the Motorola Application's Platform on the Droid 3 and Droid Bionic.
there's more to it than that.

I still sit here and think if this phone is worth trading the Thunderbolt in for. I have a feeling 6 months ago the answer was yes - but now there will be (shortly) a phone that really is worth trading in... rather than maybe trading in. Thoughts?
14. Sniggly posted on 10 Sep 2011, 08:05 3
*sigh* For one, I had trouble getting through the review due to the atrocious abuse of the English language I witnessed. For another, the Bionic is priced the same as a Charge, while offering a lot more. Third, other review sites found the exact opposite to be true about its viewing angles-they reported clear output even from almost 180 degrees.
Seems you did the best you could to find anything that could possibly be misconstrued as a negative on the phone.
17. bucky posted on 10 Sep 2011, 08:17 1
if anything i think the reviewer was overly generous to a phone that is demanding top dollar for services that are the norm if not, subpar.
I was honestly shocked to see this phone get a 9 in the first place! I had the atrix and it was a 9-7 months ago! This phone is no different. The viewing angles are in fact, terrible on these pentile screens.
20. Sniggly posted on 10 Sep 2011, 09:08 0
No, the viewing angles are not terrible. I'm typing on an Atrix right now. I'm not arguing against the score, just arguing against how terribly written the article is. There is nothing normal or subpar about 4G service. It actually is crazy fast. That's the main reason they're asking for 300 for the Bionic. Granted, it's a bit pricey for me, but if I had the money (and if the phone hadn't come out so late) I'd rock it in a heartbeat over the Atrix.
23. bucky posted on 10 Sep 2011, 09:31 0
I get what your saying about the 4g but viewing angles are terrible on those screens. Tilt the screen ever so slightly and it fades as if you have a crappy screen cover! Good phone but the screen and camera need alot of work. I loved the webtop feature but it was to slow to even stream a movie on wifi
32. Sniggly posted on 10 Sep 2011, 10:32 0
It's a bit hard for me to judge, because I do have a screen cover on my phone. However, I judge viewing angles by the screen's clarity. By that standard I have excellent viewing angles, as I can still clearly see everything on the screen from almost 180 degrees.
53. ardent1 posted on 10 Sep 2011, 14:21 1
You own an Atrix? That is a horrible phone - I examined it when it first came out and I knew instantly that Motorola did a horrible job designing it. For example, what the hell were the designers smoking when they considered biometrics on the Atrix??
81. Sniggly posted on 10 Sep 2011, 22:51 0
Maybe they considered the fact that the biometrics on the Atrix work, and provide something a bit more secure than a 4 digit code or a pattern (which can be figured out by paying attention to fingerprint smears)?
I use the fingerprint scanner all the time, it only doesn't work if my finger is wet or has some kind of residue on it. A quick wipe off and it works flawlessly. It's also quicker than putting in a pattern or code.
96. Thump3rDX17 posted on 11 Sep 2011, 01:13 0
did you get anybody else to try to unlock it while the biometric sensor was engaged?
113. Sniggly posted on 11 Sep 2011, 12:23 0
Yes, a couple of different people. They couldn't do it. It takes a direct image of each of your pointer finger prints. You have to make sure your finger is at the right angle, but that's not a major bother.
114. Thump3rDX17 posted on 11 Sep 2011, 12:35 0
that's awesome. i wish the Bionic had that...

55. ardent1 posted on 10 Sep 2011, 14:44 0
Here is an example of Sniggly putting his foot in his mouth:
Sniggly wrties: "...you've just committed a critical error. Apple has made exactly one patent payment in the mobile industry in the past several years, which was to Nokia, and only after a dragged out lawsuit. They have flatly refused to pay anyone else who has brought patents to bear against them, the biggest offense being their refusal to pay anything to Motorola. Hence the lawsuits against them. "
Sniggly, do you have a brain? If so, could you use it for a second. Haven't you heard the case about Personal Audio suing Apple for the second time after Personal Audio won a $8 million patent judgement against Apple. I guess the $8 million paid by Apple doesn't count. BTW, the court threw out the Personal Audio's second lawsuit since the $8 million award grants Apple a license for ALL future products, respectively.
Sniggly's comment of "my statements here are grounded in truth..." is just a sorry ass example of hubris. I can't believe Sniggly is such a f**k'n moron!!
69. taco50 (banned) posted on 10 Sep 2011, 16:45 0
Ardent facts don't matter to sniggly. Anytime any news comes out about Apple he automatically assumes the worst without any facts or research. He's a fanboy hater who's an intellectual in his mind only.
82. Sniggly posted on 10 Sep 2011, 22:55 3
You're the moron who thinks that respecting patent law is only making token payments after being forced to by court decisions. 8 million is a pittance for Apple to pay out to anyone. And it wasn't a lawsuit that involved anything with cell phones; it was over the iPod.
When I talk about the mobile industry, I am not referring to MP3 players or anything like that. I'm talking about phones and smartphones. And let me reiterate:
MAKING A PAYMENT AFTER BEING FORCED TO BY THE COURTS DOES NOT DENOTE A RESPECT FOR OTHERS' PATENTS.

"So you ask, what’s great about the Motorola DROID BIONIC? Well, it’s the one handset that’s actually able to combine everything perfectly into one device"
And if thats the case...whats wrong with a 9 score?
30. roldefol posted on 10 Sep 2011, 10:24 4
Yeah, really. They haven't given a Verizon handset a score higher than 9 since the original Droid X, and that actually was a pretty groundbreaking device. The Pentile screen alone merits at least a one point deduction.

Or, you can get the phone from Costco and return it within 90 days if the iphone 5/GSII impresses you more.
22. arandomblogger (unregistered) posted on 10 Sep 2011, 09:30 3
Really, PhoneArean? Taking away points for a long development time? Would you rather have a half-baked and buggy as hell premature launch like the Thunderbolt was when it came out? Seriously, I'd rather wait the extra couple months and have a phone that actually works well right from the start. I wonder if you'll take away points from the iPhone 5 when it comes out whenever the hell that'll be for having a "delayed" launch....or are you too busy polishing and spit shining apple's shiny casing and logo?
26. bucky posted on 10 Sep 2011, 10:07 0
being slightly delayed is one thing...taking a year to come out while others surpass you before its even released, is another.
Why must someone always mention the iphone?
34. roldefol posted on 10 Sep 2011, 11:35 0
And two of the phones that scooped the Bionic were Motorolas! The Droid X2 was Verizon's first dual core and first qHD screen. The Droid 3 was the second. The Bionic may be more capable than either of those phones, but it's not breaking any new ground.
Motorola probably saved themselves a lot of hassle by cancelling the buggy Etna Bionic and pushing out the superior Targa, but they still lost the PR game. And unfortunately, it only has a month or so in the limelight before Verizon shifts its attention to the iPhone 5 and HTC Vigor.
50. Thump3rDX17 posted on 10 Sep 2011, 14:13 2
it has a Dual-Core Processor and LTE, what else did it need to be the device it was hyped up to be?
35. jroc74 posted on 10 Sep 2011, 11:42 4
Surpassed in terms of what? Its on par with other phones. Cuz the other phones wins benchmarks, its surpassed?
Check reviews of the Bionic vs. other LTE phones in weak, bad reception areas....and you will probably see why it was good for Moto to make their own LTE chip.
Check battery life reviews. For the most part....it seems better than other LTE phones on Verizon.
44. bucky posted on 10 Sep 2011, 13:11 2
the top dogs (sensation, sgs2, evo 3d)
It has a good battery and probably very sturdy as all motorola's are for the most part. LTE support but i have that on my sgs2 with fido in Canada.
It doesnt have a screen better than those mentioned, processor, looks (eye of the beholder ofcourse), xda support, camera and software (moto blur)
It is however, the best phone on Verizon, I agree with you there. I just think they took too long to come out with it.
51. Thump3rDX17 posted on 10 Sep 2011, 14:15 3

I liked the review. None the less, the cons were unrelated to the specs; kinda weak cons IMHO.
9 seems very appropriate for a perfected 4g experience.

Prime will not have the superior exynos chip but the same clocked up chip from the one found inside the bionic which score a low ~2100 quadrant score vs the exynos ~3300. Can a clock up chip of .3ghz and clocked up gpu give that different of performance?
42. bolaG posted on 10 Sep 2011, 12:49 0
How do you know the prime is just going to have a overclocked TI chip? Do work for samsung? Do already have the device? If not, do you have any links to prove your claim? Because as far as I know almost everything about the prime are still rumors.
52. Thump3rDX17 posted on 10 Sep 2011, 14:17 0
that's what it's rumored to have. that's all we're going by on everything about this phone. that fact is as plausible as the phone even existing as we know it.
57. TU_Buckeye29 posted on 10 Sep 2011, 14:59 3
How many of the folks bashing this phone have actually played with it extensively? I got to work with a Bionic earlier in the week & was genuinely impressed. It's lightweight, snappy as can be, this version of Blur is actually not bad, the speakers are pretty darned good, phone's thin (minus that top inch where the camera flash is, but how many phone users hold their phone by pinching the top of it?), the battery does offer enough juice for moderate use w/o charging - and that's before getting to LTE. Yeah, I had my reservations about the delayed launch (I almost switched to Sprint to get a Photon), but think about it: all the extra time results in a phone that's NOT buggy (you hear that, Thunderbolt?). Yeah, it's unfortunate that us VZW supporters had to wait so long for a phone that ultimately wasn't groundbreaking in terms of the technology being offered. But, bottom line from a Bionic OWNER: this is an excellent phone (and PA did make ONE legit point in their lackluster review: this phone does blend the different techs extremely well). It's pricey, yes; but if you have an upgrade available & have the $ then it's worth it (Amazon). If you have a Thunderbolt already (one that isn't from the 1st dozen buggy shipments), you're not missing TOO MUCH by skipping out on trading up for the Bionic - the 4G experience is similar enough between the two, the Tbolt is passable in terms of function speed... I won't compare the display quality between the two - let's just say that the displays on both phones are good enough for every day use :-p So Bionic bashers, either handle the phone a bit in depth so you can offer comments based on ACTUAL knowledge & experience; or save your dough for something else & keep quiet in the meantime ;-)

Dont worry...its like what the Cnet reviewer actually said:
"I really didnt want to like this phone, I was prepared to be disappointed"
It is what it is...lol In the end she actually liked it and after additional testing it was given Editors Choice.
I think she speaks for alot of the Bionic haters.
58. xmrrushx posted on 10 Sep 2011, 15:12 0
I have the phone for a day now. Battery life is eh.... heavy usage with LTE i can get about 5hrs before i get down to %40. Some bugs here and there i got that home screen glitch and had to reset the phone once because it was really laggy. Camera operation is terrible when turning off and on it locks for a split second while you hear the camera itself click. For some reason the audio from Netflix or Pandora has a loud click when playing audio, zumocast does not the click tho.
61. KYLE (unregistered) posted on 10 Sep 2011, 15:16 0
I got the Bionic as soon as it was released. Yes indeed the phone is fantastic. But you have to remember how long you have to wait until your next upgrade. Next month or two the Droid HD and the Droid Prime is coming out and it has all the specs as the Bionic but better and way THINNER. The only down side of the Bionic is the battery life. I don't care if its a 1700 bat. it still only lasts 5-6 hours. If you get the Bionic plan on spending a whopping 50.00 more for the extended if you want a full day use. I am taking the Bionic back and going to wait for the Droid HD or the Droid Prime. remember the Bionic is an ugly brick and you can wait one or two months for a way better product....like SAMSUNG!!
62. bolaG posted on 10 Sep 2011, 15:46 0
There is no indication that the Droid HD will be LTE.
Droid Prime may be a better phone. Will have to wait and see...
73. Thump3rDX17 posted on 10 Sep 2011, 18:09 0
if the newer phones are thinner with LTE, a higher clocked processor and HD resolution screens they're probably not going to have battery life as good as what's on the Bionic.

I have a serious question to ask here
WTF is wrong with a lot of you people????
seriously .....tell me......what the FLYING f**k is wrong with some of you??
ESPECIALLY to the iPhone people
are you so threatened by another phone that you insist on coming into threads to bash a phone you most likely have never even seen in person? Does this phone in some way threaten your manhood? ITS A f**kING PHONE for christ sakes
this thread was filled with such vitriol and bad blood it was hard to get through.....you dont like Android (check)....you don't like Motorola (check)....you dont like the Bionic (check)
we get it....move the hell on
this is a site for finding out about cell phones......and you turn it into a personal battle.....are your lives so empty and unfulfilled that this is how you find happiness?
seriously....some of you really need to go volunteer in soup kitchens......Boys and Girls Clubs.....Food Banks....Big Brothers....something....find out what really matters in this world before you waste the gift of life you were given.
I own a Bionic....I think it is real nice....but I would never fight someone about it....that's f**king silly

no one is trying to "control the masses here" junior.... I am just trying to understand why people need to be so uptight about a Cell Phone....enough that they feel the need to constantly go on the attack against a brand/platform that they don't like.
and yes skippy I wasn't forced to read it, but I wanted to read responses to the actual material in the article. I was however forced to sift through comment after comment from those that obviously have some anger issues/insecurities and have a deep need to get back to what really is important in this world.....you know....people like yourself

don't be here if you don't like it because like it or not heated debates will be had here. you can't just come in and say what's being done on a site that it's pretty much for is wrong. at least there's a place for people that are critical about the device they use to bring a degree of order to their way of life to commune and get their opinions out instead of there being no place at all and we all just scream at each other right in the streets and the cell phone stores for having or not having an Android, iPhone, Blackberry. Bada, what have you.. i know i would without my occasional troll comments every now and then. xD

heated debates are fine......what this is amounts to is childish sticking your tongues out at people. I don't hear debate....I hear people saying "your phone sucks.....I have no reason why it does but I own a different phone and your intimidates me"
that isn't debate....and if you think it is, that is just sad
I guess I just grew up in a different time (pre Internet) when there was a certain level of decorum that was observed.....the younger generation mostly (not all of course) acts like a bunch of childish idiots online because they think its ok.......they have been programmed that it is ok by stupid phrase like "its the 2011 internet" ..."occasional troll comments"
