Motorola ATRIX 4G vs Apple iPhone 4
Apple’s A4 processor does wonders in making the platform experience on the iPhone 4 exhilarating since it consistently keeps in mind speed and responsiveness. Meanwhile, we’re ushering a new era in the smartphone world as the Motorola ATRIX 4G is one of the first smartphones on the market to employ a 1GHz dual-core NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor. Now in our comparison, the iPhone 4 overall has a smoother response over the ATRIX 4G when it comes to navigating around the platform, but then again, it doesn’t have all the graphical eye candy present with Android’s interface. Regardless, we find the speed of the ATRIX 4G satisfying seeing that it’s definitely up there in terms of responsiveness versus other Android devices, however, the fluid nature of the iPhone 4 is eye catching in its own terms.
Depending on your taste, either platform experience will suit your needs, but it ultimately comes down to simplicity versus personalization – which is the common battle we continually see in our comparisons. Between the two, iOS is the easier platform to learn since it’s rather straightforward in its approach without being complicated in any way. To put it lightly, we haven’t seen a drastic departure with the iPhone’s interface at all – especially when its homescreen still looks the same as it did at its inception. However, if personalization is more your kind of thing, then MOTOBLUR running on top of Android 2.2 Froyo on the ATRIX 4G is right in your alley. Thanks to its vast mix of useful widgets, live wallpapers, and shortcuts, you can have a ball rearranging the look of the ATRIX 4G to tastefully complement your personality.
Mainly because of their lightning quick processors and fine screen real estate, the messaging experience with both smartphones is gratifying since speed typing is no issue at all. The portrait keyboards of both might be a little bit cramped, though a bit more manageable with the ATRIX 4G’s larger display, but the landscape options provide the most comfort in typing. Even to this day, we adore the iPhone’s near perfect predictive text function, but the inclusion of the Swype keyboard on the ATRIX 4G is equally appreciated. Either way, we find ourselves typing at a moderate rate with few mistakes after some time practicing with their keyboards.
Since it’s powered by Google’s mobile operating system, the Gmail experience with the ATRIX 4G is the more favorable one because it carries over most of the functions you’d come to expect from the desktop version. It’s not to say that the iPhone 4’s email app is bad, which it isn’t, since it features things like threaded conversations. However, we find ourselves being a little bit more productive in organizing our emails with the ATRIX 4G. Either way, adding different accounts on both smartphones is a painless process that normally requires your email address and password for automatic set up.
Internet and Connectivity:
Voice calling in any part of the world is no problem between these two quad-band (850/900/1800/1900 MHz) GSM phones, but the iPhone 4 has a tiny advantage because of its quad-band (850/900/1900/2100 MHz) UMTS support versus the tri-band (850/1900/2100 MHz) connection of the ATRIX 4G. However, in theory though, Motorola’s bundle of joy should obtain faster data speeds since it’s an HSPA+ enabled device. Sadly, it doesn’t beat out the iPhone 4’s performance running on AT&T’s network right now – which can partly be blamed for its lack for HSUPA+ support; the upload component of HSPA+. To prove the vast difference, we performed a quick test and the results are staggering with the iPhone 4 getting 2,500kbps down & 1,667kps up speeds, while the ATRIX 4G tallied in at the average of 1,400kbps down & 170kbps up. Luckily, both handsets feature 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi in the event a cellular connection is unavailable. Furthermore, Bluetooth 2.1 with EDR is also on board with both to allow various wireless peripherals to connect with them.
As we mentioned already, data speeds seem to be faster on the iPhone 4, and with that in mind, it didn’t surprise us to see it fully render complex web sites like ours first. Not only do we find it beating the ATRIX 4G in that department, but we see mobile Safari offering the more fluid movements with kinetic scrolling and pinch zooming. It’s not to say that the experience is bad with the ATRIX 4G, which is also great, mainly due to its support for Flash Player 10.1. Both clearly have their own unique advantages, though in the end, the two high caliber handsets provide a resounding web browsing experience.
Indeed it’s a nice thing to see the Motorola ATRIX 4G having Wi-Fi- tethering support out of the box, but we’re not too convinced that it’ll be beneficial since the data speeds of the handset aren’t that fast enough to handle multiple consumption with other devices. Nonetheless, it’s still a welcomed addition that’s missing on the iPhone 4 – albeit, it might come down the road with some software update.

It's obvious that Atrix is better so I'm asking - Why do you make that stupid comparisons to iPhone? Every new smarthone is compared to an old iPhone - WHY? Do you want to make free advertisements for Apple? I don't get it, why old and totally different iPhone again? iPhone is out of Atrix/Optimus2x/SGS2 league so just let it go!
Just make comparison to another smartphone - there are plenty of them, NOT ALWAYS TO THE FU$KING iPhone!

adn here is person who wanted to buy PDA but is looking at phones...
Atrix is CRAP AS PHONE. good only as PDA.
iPhone is good as bouth phone adn PDA!

so wait.. your saying that the phone that is NOTORIOUS for dropping calls is the better "phone" phone?? LOL. Stupid comment of the day maybe.
10. Darthmaul (unregistered)
Man I couldnt agree more. You said it! I dont understand why obviously waaay better smartphones are always compaired to that piece of crap. All the newer phones that are out there now get to be compaired to tha famous ish.t !! People, get over it! Unless jailbreak didnt exist, this phone couldnt even do basic stuff, like a sms delivery report, or many other functions not there from the box. It is obvious that someone is paying to get always these comparisons. Shame!

just saying but they said the phone lags while moving around the interface and that the iphone doesnt... i would never buy a phone that lags...

The comparisons are made to the iPhone because on a phone-for-phone basis, the iPhone is where the bar is being set. You can deny that the iPhone should be the standard for comparison, but that is your opinion. The market is buying iPhones left and right.
If Apple/Steve come out with the rumored CPU and GPU upgrades in the iPhone 5 in the July timeframe, the Atrix will fall behind and will have only been competitive for maybe 4 months. I wonder how the Atrix will compare when iOS v. 4.3 goes into production? The slip may start even sooner.
4. p0rkguy (Posts: 685; Member since: 23 Nov 2010)
Why do you guys even do comparisons when you can't even put the iPhone as the loser in the battle?
Every single damn comparison with the iPhone in it ends with the same conclusion.
"However, it always comes down to whether your prefer the easy to learn and simplistic experience with iOS, or the personalized functionality with Android 2.2 Froyo."
You guys are so biased to the point where you have to make it seem like you're trying to be unbiased.

I do not understand why in the spec of the ATRIX it says that the editor gave it 8, and at the end of the ATRIX review it says that he gave 9.5!!! Why because they didnt want to compare it to the Iphone.
and i saw it (the review) a while ago and it showed 9.5!
6. p0rkguy (Posts: 685; Member since: 23 Nov 2010)
Oh my god, it gets even worse when you actually look through all the comparisons.
How is it that a .5" increase in screen size and 100x960 can cause such choppy/grainy screen shots for the Atrix?
18. roldefol (Posts: 4174; Member since: 28 Jan 2011)
I blame the PenTile screen of the ATRIX. It may be 540x960, but there are fewer subpixels than in the 640x960 iPhone display. This is the same reason the 4" S-AMOLED screen on the Galaxy S looks grainier than the 4.3" screen on the Droid X. It seems Apple has cornered the market on super-high-density LCD displays for now - not even its supplier LG can match it.
Of course, that's all at a microscopic level - I compared the iPhone 4 and Atrix side by side, and while the iPhone looked slightly better, both handled fine details very well.
36. megamrambo (Posts: 37; Member since: 19 Jul 2010)
In actuality the Atrix 4g has a screen resolution of 443x722 if it has the same pixel matrix of an original super amoled possessed by the Galaxy S line.

Why always there is an iPhone and an android haters on this website , just pick what u r convinced in and stop this stupid arguments ,,,, it's better to write ur own experience like the old days .
8. superpooburger (Posts: 31; Member since: 17 Feb 2011)
in conclusion is writen: "these are unanimously the best two smartphones that are currently gracing AT&T’s lineup.".
If we look back in motorollas review we can find this: "Calling quality is average at best".
I do not see how these 2 sentencis can go togeder? if fact how these 2 review fit togeder!
iphone provides best quality. That one i agree, but after we see complains about static in voice calls, then phone is already marked as CRAP. So please change teh review to tell the truth, Iphone is way better then atric 4g, just becosue it has no static in voice calls!!!!!!!!

Learn how to type so we can understand your trolling superpooburger.
11. Po0yAn (Posts: 2; Member since: 11 Jan 2011)
you guys at iphonearena are yet to learn how to take snapshots from the display on an android device.
those pictures are pathetic for a mobile site which does comparisons and reviews a lot.
Google it, it's pretty easy thing through SDK and doesn't need root or anything and it's the same for all android devices. I recommend it, it's good for your reputation!
28. Lucas777 (Posts: 2137; Member since: 06 Jan 2011)
well google needs to make it easy... on iphone, u just press to buttons... i still dont see why android cant just copy one more thing and do that
13. protozeloz (Posts: 5396; Member since: 16 Sep 2010)
Didn't i just asked not to compare with iPhone 4? why not compare with the 2X?
or you guys like the drama?
17. luis_lopez_351 (Posts: 951; Member since: 18 Nov 2010)
Have you guys seen that new Toyota Camery commercial? they talk about why do all other car manufacture compare it to that car. they say they do it because it popular. Same thing goes with the iphone. They compare it to the iphone because its the most popular phone(Popular not best) and when they're using it to show how much different phones Contrast to it.
19. protozeloz (Posts: 5396; Member since: 16 Sep 2010)
cars are compared among other cars non Toyota branded, but they compare only with the iPhone.... you cant always compare a SUV, or a truck from others with a Toyota car...
for example witch keyboard should be considered more comfortable for the use? the G2 or the Click 2,or the Droid 2? camera performance of the Optmus 2X versus the Droid X VS evo 4G... when this kind of comparisons are done I don't mind they compare the iP4 with the Atrix 2(Invented that name)
20. superpooburger (Posts: 31; Member since: 17 Feb 2011)
Please, do not complaing about everything being compered to iPhone. I jsut watched the newly added video. And there we can werry well see, that ihpne is better then atrix. On scrooling sooming and other stuff atrix lagged a lot, while iphone did not. So realy guys, you are so damn stupid taht need device with better spec, which preforms worse?
so you know... i am not iPhone fan, i do not have iPhone, i will not buy iPhone...
23. roldefol (Posts: 4174; Member since: 28 Jan 2011)
This guy can't be for real. "togeder", "werry"... perhaps he'd like to see de nuclear wessels.
24. ZayZay (Posts: 571; Member since: 26 Feb 2011)
Once again a review of a phone vs. an Apple product. I save myself the trouble of reading the review and assumed phonearena said the Iphone was better. Good Job phone arena another pointless review!
25. networkdood (Posts: 6330; Member since: 31 Mar 2010)
ok, so now let us compare a Toyota car with the IPHONE 4....who will in??
26. networkdood (Posts: 6330; Member since: 31 Mar 2010)
So, has the ATRIX 4G received the best review of phones, so far, when being compared to the iphone 4.
Does the iphone 4 do widgets?? No, right...the review lack depth, as usual.
Honestly, if you take an ANDROID phone and root it and go to XDA.com, and then review it with the iphone 4, the iphone 4 will lose almost everytime....lol

I would give the speed advantage to the iPhone. I don’t care how many cores it has if it still takes longer to scroll on a
web page or move around in the OS. iPhone in the video was much smoother and data speeds as of today suggest the iPhone sees
higher network speeds. Your spec category is completely useless and obviously from what we saw from your own result in the
speed category, turned out a completely irrelevant category. The web browser may have flash, but the browsing experience
isn’t as nice with all that lag, you could call this one a draw just for the added benefit of having flash. The OS category,
I agree, the notifications on iPhone stink but it is also a very stable and smooth OS while Android despite having much
better notifications has that annoying lag and slow response, Draw. Apps would seem to be definitely an iPhone win,
everything on Android isn’t nearly as polished as their iOs counter parts, though I do like a lot of the tethering apps and
freedom Android has, Draw. Screen is definitely a win for the iPhone, text is so much better and pictures look great as does
video, the only one that you can say would be a draw would be SAMOLED just because of the colors and low power consumption,
the difference in viewing angles is irrelevant.
Specs: Atrix 4G (stupid category and not an indicator of performance as we can see in the video)
Screen: iPhone 4
Speed: iPhone 4
Cameras(could be Specs): iPhone 4
Build: iPhone 4
Call quality, speakers: iPhone 4 (no audio note i have ever sent sound as good as the ones from my iPhone 4)
Winner: iPhone 4
Apple still has the best smartphone on the market. I have had the at&t iPhone 4 and the Verizon iPhone 4, Droid Incredible,
Samsung Fascinate, Motorola Droid X and HTC Evo 4G and used the Nexus S and MyTouch 4G extensively.
1. iPhone 4
2. HTC Evo 4G
3. HTC MyTouch 4G
4. Samsung Nexus S
5. Samsung Fascinate, Motorola Atrix 4G
6. Droid Incredible
7. Motorola Droid X
If the Fascinate had Froyo it would beat out the Nexus S and MyTouch 4G, despite lack of front facing camera.
I have read below article that explain very deeply about both products Fight????
Markeet Fight :: Motorola Atrix 4G Vs Iphone4!

I personally like the Iphone 4g alot better and in your comparison video you really showed that the Iphone is alot better. The Motorola Atrix 4g isn't that great a phone. I am totally convinced that you like the Iphone 4g alot better! :)

It is easy to realize this is just a commercial for iphone, or you guys are in complete denial
33. John Lee 22 (unregistered)
No matter the phone specs, a liitle better or not. In my opnion the biggest reason to not buy Iphone is that Android features is very interest and daily innovative. But never forget that Iphone still a good choice, and has a robust hardware/engine, specially the display.
35. Jay (unregistered)
I think that these comparisons do slant more toward iPhone's strong points, but I guess until someone knocks them of the perch they will continue to be compared in that aspect. That being said, I believe that overall Android is a much better OS...it just has a lot more to offer. I plan to buy an Atrix myself, but there are two things that mar the Atrix (that I plan to fix once rooted):
1. Motorola's Software sux!!! Motoblur is the worse, the widgets are bland looking and the it slows things down a lot.
2. I do believe that AT&T has held back (technically) every Android device they have released in order to keep the iPhone on its perch. There is no reason that the iPhone's download speed should average nearly double the Atrix's download speed. The is made even more credible with the fact that you can go over to XDA and get an unofficial radio firmware that will bring the download speed up to the same level as the iPhone's (maybe even more). The let's me know that AT&T is not allowing Androids shine brighter than their mighty iPhone.
I currently have an HTC Aria and with custom firmware and an unofficial radio update, my little beast can pretty much match (or beat) an iPhone 4 in features and performance (except for the front facing camera and LED flash).

This is an excellent review and exactly narrates the clear superiority which the iPhone has had for some time which I personally experienced just this afternoon at Best Buy.
The ATRIX is suppose to be the fastest phone on the planet, but its herky jerky and not-loading-the-web at times the way I wanted left me frustrated and flat. It was reminiscent of the first Droid when it first came out. Black Berry was an even worse web-experience before they bought a software company that programmed them a half decent browser. This fluidity of experience of which this author speaks is completely truthful on the iPhone/iTouch. The truth is, as well, I want to buy the Atrix with the Lapdock once i heard gingerbread was now available, and some of the problems are supposedly fixed on the Lapdock as well in addition to a price reduction ($500 vs 200 after a rebate of $100, I think). But this quick run through with an active-with-service Atrix has left me disappointed to say the least. It's almost like the memory in the iPhone is preemptively saving the screen or web screen you're getting ready to go to... hard to explain until you experience youself. Go test this yourself to see what we're talking about. There a really good article on the web where PC Magazine tells the skinny of the firmware update- what it did and didn't fix (other reviews but this is the one of interest) :http://www.pcmag.com/article2/

sorry for iphone lovers.. but Android is taking over.. let me tell you one thing, i had the firt and second generation of the apple iphone.. apple made a good work on the phone on those years.. bu if you compare from then until now they just change in the integrated gyroscope, cameras and shape of the phone... other than that is the phone same crap... and letting you know that your famous os for iphone five... copied a few thing of android... i mean that had to do something else because it has been the same icons the same menu style and same everything... dos your iphone 4 screen when you turn it on looks any diferent of the first generation one? ..... nope.. maybe ... apple have technology but is getting behind on innovations..

Not sure where people are coming up with all the apparent lagging on the Atrix. I find it to be incredibly fast, and feel like the perceived lack of "smoothness" is more a product of the Apple OS physics being more refined than those of Android, as opposed to a hardware issue.
I'm typically an Apple faithful, but for half the price, to me the Atrix's shortcomings compared to the iPhone are totally negligible. And despite my hesitation to stray from OSX/iOS, I'm finding Android 2.3, while a bit more cumbersome in some respects, to be a breathe of fresh air after having to jailbreak my old iPhone just to achieve functionality that should have been there in the first place.
I'm sure the iPhone 5 will be fantastic, and I still love my old jailbroken iPhone 3g, but with all the powerful Android phones out there nowadays, I find it difficult to justify paying double for a marginally more pleasant user experience at best.
41. Ed (unregistered)
I should add that Apple desktops and laptops are a whole different story – as long as windows is around, nothing in the PC world will hold a candle to OSX for a long time.
42. KrazyK (unregistered)
Well I will give you a quick review. I just purchased the Atrix about a month ago. Best phone I have ever had. I have never had a complaint about static in the phone. Video is amazing, internet is crazy fast, Video plays perfect, and internet is smoking fast. Never owned an I Phone, however I have a lot of friends with them and I have used them plenty for web, calls, and data. I really honestly think my Atrix is waaaaaaaay better than the IPhone 4. As I said I never personally owed an IPhone so I cant say its the best comparison, I will say though that if something comes out better than the Atrix in the next year as far as Android, Ill be very shocked
43. gmcclimans (Posts: 1; Member since: 03 Oct 2011)
Look, they're both great handsets. Not sure why there's negativity. I've used both, and they have great features respectively. It just depends on what your preferences are. I'd recommend the Atrix to anyone, but I personally prefer the iPhone for many reasons. Doesn't matter whether you like either one, we all benefit from the smart phone competition. Look at the Galaxy S2. What's next???
44. MissPaula66 (Posts: 1; Member since: 15 Oct 2011)
Hi i actually had the iphone4 and had problems with dropped calls and people not hearing me, as a phone it sucked so i sold it and am not waiting fot the Motoroola Atrix, I will never get another iphone, hopefully i will have a better experience.

I BOUGHT THE ATRIX AND ITS IS GREAT VERY FAST I LOVE IT ALL YOU TERDS THAT ARE KNOCKING IT ARE JUST MAD BECAUSE YOU CANT GET ONE
