LG Optimus GT540 Review
voice over the wireless network with the LG Optimus GT540 is really a pleasant experience. The Optimus' earpiece sounds perfectly fine, with voices being quite audible, but on the other side things are even better, with even higher loudness and easier to comprehend voices. Calling is near perfect on the LG Optimus GT540.
The 1500mAh battery powering the LG Optimus manages to provide some serious standby time - about 21 days, while talk time is rated at 5.5 hours. A pretty satisfying performance on the overall, at least for today's smartphone standards.
Concluding whether a phone is a decent investment is (almost) always a difficult task. Of course, it all depends on the user's preference - whether or not they like the design, whether or not they need certain features, or would sacrifice them for others... it's obvious that there isn't a perfect phone. So, is the LG Optimus GT540 a good investment according to us? Yep, it is. That's purely one of the fastest mainstream Android smartphones we have ever seen. Sure, it has a nasty resistive screen, but if this particular drawback is not that much of a problem for you, then we guarantee that you won't regret the reliability and responsiveness the LG Optimus GT540 will offer you.
Among the possible alternatives to the Optimus is the older HTC Hero, which relies heavily on its Sense UI and sexier teflon-coated body (if you get the white version). It benefits from a capacitive screen, but falls short when it comes to performance. The HTC Legend should also be considered, because it sports a spectacular design too, and adds the needed horsepower that lacked in its predecessor, plus the latest OS version. The Optimus is made of plastic and runs an older build, but still outpaces the Legend, so it all depends on whether you'd prefer design and some extra features to a seamlessly smooth performance.
We can't really compare the LG Optimus GT540 to higher-tier smartphones like the Desire or Nexus One, because it isn't meant to be stacked up against those beasts. However, the Optimus is a pretty decent mid-range Android handset, which, if priced correctly, can prove to be the best in its class.
LG Optimus GT540 Video Review:
- Superb performance
- Good call quality
- Plays Xvid
- Has a resistive screen
- Does not play most of the popular video formats

whats the difference of resistive to capacitive? and what phone would be the example of this two?

Resistive screen doesn't handles two inputs simultaneously. A Capacitive screen can handle two or more inputs simultaneously, that is why its needed in the feature of Pinch-to-Zoom.

resistive touch input senses force ( it has two sheets slightly apart and senses where you press by where the sheets touch (due to your press))
resesitve requires more effort - and usually can't support multi-touch.
capacitive touch input senses heat/electrical signals
so is much easier to use - only requires you to touch the screen lightly and supports multi touch

im using this phone, not too superb, but on par with its cheap price @jaypee, with resistive you can access the screen with anything (hands, phone, sticks, etc) most of not expensive smartphone using this type, resistive cant be multi touched (cmiiw), capacitive must be controled by somehing that has charge in it, example, hands, battery etc, example iphone

I had this phone for 1 day before returning it. The problem with phone is it's antenna - it struggles to get reception in the same location other phones I owned have a good - full bars - signal.
The phone I'm currently using is Nokia 5230. There is always a full signal on 3G. The Optimus gets about 2 bars at best on 2G. This is when using the same sim as the Nokia.
I tried phoning the mobile from a landline to test it's responsiveness - out of 6 calls spaced about 5 minutes apart, 3 of the calls didn't cause the mobile to ring but went straight through to my network's answerphone - I know from experiece this is due to poor signal.
Having such a weak antenna means this phone doesn't suceed in it's most primary function so it's hard to see how any website could possibly recommend it.
I've experinced the same problem with many HTC phones.
What would be useful to see here on this website is an accessment of each phone's ability to receive a signal because it's clear to me that there are large differences between 1 phone's ability to receive a signal and another. And what use is a phone that is incapable of connecting unless you happen to always be in a strong signal area?

have you tried to switch the sim card? i've had the same problem with the iphone 3g, but i've switched sim cards and it worked fine for me...

i wanna know if anyone of you did have a problem regarding receiving messages? coz my lg optimus is kinda annoying me. i did receive messages but it were just on the notifications but no where to be found on the inbox. is it probably because of the phone or the network?? thanks for the reply. :)

this is a cool phone.., i'm in indonesia..
i have no complaint about this phone, the signal, GPS and othrers is good..
it can preview the document (doc, xls, pdf, ppt) and can edit that kinda file too, but with pro version application (buy). about the messaging, it very cool. you can read all of the message from whom u re SMS with.
for the contact, it can sync with gmail, facebook etc. (like another android) or import it from SD card (u must export contact to SD card first, from ur old phone).
the camera is great, for 3mp camera.
it can upgrade to eclair (2.1), n now in progress to 2.2 (froyo)
with "customize" it, u also can root n app2sd.

If your on wi-fi then I don't know but it sounds like your using data roaming. If you are using data roaming and you're downloading lots of things its going to use a lot of credit because you are charged with every megabyte of internet you use and downloading uses a lot.
To stop this go into the settings and onto 'Wireless and Networks' then in 'Mobile network settings' un-tick Data roaming. This, however, turns of text messaging. If you want an easier way which keeps messaging download 'APNdroid' from the marketplace. I have it and it works fine on my Optimus. Hope this helps :)

I'm sorry to agree with the guy with the weak signal..
I own this phone for 2 months and the signal is awful, so there's nothing to review other than that..I would sell it but from what i saw in my country i'll only get about 100€ so it's not worth it..
