LG Optimus 4X HD Review

0. phoneArena 20 Jun 2012, 05:35 posted on

The LG Optimus 4X HD has the full monty - a quad-core Tegra 3 processor, a 4.7” “True HD” display plus a fairly compact for it body, and the latest Android ICS out of the box. It also has a removable battery, microSD card slot and a plain regular SIM card slot - that combination you can’t find in any of this season’s flagships...

The device itself is very impressive and all, but most critics are on the software/support side at least with previous devices a user had to wait a very long time before a software update removed bugs/improved stability etc

in India samsung users hardly get any soft update.so we should consider this fact unless its a gingerbread.

I hope they prove me wrong. I have been a critic of LG smartphones for a long time. I really hope this ones succeeds, We need another Great competitor out there to mix up the the constant dominance of the "Big Guys"

Looks like an awesome phone. The third contender is in the ring! Your move Motorola, Apple and Sony, where is your HD Quad Core beast?

Well we can be sure that Apple's "Quad Core (processor) beast" is not coming anytime soon!

I'm sure the Xperia's with the s4 chip can rival the quad cores out there, with Sony's knack of producing the perfect optimization with their phones, i don't see an issue here

You guessed it... Apple's iPhone(Y) 5 will be quad core 800Mhz bwahaha... like their Original iPhone 4... 800mhz while the rest of the competition was 1GHz+.

Consider Apple's Quad 800Mhz vs Samsung's Exynos Quad 1400Mhz which is the fastest chip around at the moment. :)

What will you do of clock speeds??. have dinner with them.
The main thing is that the device should go smooth and Apple achives that Aim, and also lower clock speeds help save battery and Apple definitely suceeds in it

Not having physical buttons can be a rather pain in the arse. One thing about being able to unlock a device on your desk at work by pressing the button is amazing.

Not having to fumble around the top or sides... or in my previous Motorola Atrix's case bloody underneath... bad bad choices in functional form.

So far this is the one LG phone I'm interested in, The design is somewhat attractive to my taste.
Now let the 3 way Royal Rumble between the Samsung Galaxy SIII, HTC OneX & LG 4X HD commence. .

Hard to say on to which will come 2nd, to settle that would be like a coin flip, but s3 is arguably the better of the 3 in my opinion. LG's fall out was the waaaay to late software update of their flagship phones. Hope they straightened out that factor this year. . .

will this phone sell? yes of course it will. why? it is cheaper than the S3, has a regular SIM card slot (which removes the hassle of having to change the SIM card), expandable memory and removable battery. as the article said, among the 3, the 4x is the most versatile, and i'd take this over the GS3 anyday. this looks so much more nicer

Finally!!...LG is listening...I would totally get this over the S3. The S3 is a great phone but it has too many features that I probably wont use on a daily basis. So this is the winner IMO between the One X and S3. I'm guessing it's cheaper that both and pretty much has everything. The 2 things to fix would be the annoying migraine inducing auto focus during video capture and timely updates. If LG can fix that then they definitely have a winner. They might also want to improve their marketing. I guess that's 3 things they need to fix.

Have read a couple other reviews and this one. The phone is nice on its own, but when compared to other top flagships, it will probably be in fourth or fifth place. There's very little reason to get this phone other than for its design and maybe its compactness, which I find quite enamoring. It's a shame that Samsung's Korean rival still hasn't got their smartphone battle plan in order and instead is just content with poking it's head above the clouds to glimpse the view without actually breaking through.

The all plastic design follows the same faux-leather texture back which I have never liked and now there are TWO prominent chrome rims sticking out. If it was a solid metal maybe, but it's undoubtedly some cheap breakable and squeezable plastic that you have to hold onto. LG hasn't touted any polycarbonate or such, no kevlar, or glass, so materials don't sound too enticing.

LG may also win awards for their LCD tech, but why does the HTC One X have a more impressive screen with the laminated glass and painted on look? Other reviews have mentioned this, but the LG screen has a comparatively thick sheet of reflective glass that you can clearly see in the video tour. Coupled with the thick and unpleasant black border that gives it an old phone or budget phone vibe, the results are not very impressive. Then there is the simplistic UI with large, stretched looking fonts and icons. It looks more like a 800x480 budget display and single-core Froyo innards than its actual 720p goodness and quad-core ICS freshness. Changing the fat looking font and its size, as well as making the icons more compact and less stretched out looking, decreasing the size and increasing the number on-screen, would improve the look and feel drastically. Ditto for transitions. Why LG cannot understand these basic basic concepts, I do not know. The screen brightness issue also seems like something more suitable to an early prototype than a retail product.

The camera doesn't really look better than their old 8MP ones. Actually, it is similar to the HTC One X. They both lack shades of anything, losing significant detail, and instead opt to smear everything in solid colors, giving pictures a cartoony look. The One X oversharpens more and is much darker. The Optimus 4x brightens far too much. Both are more like instagram pictures than real ones.

Then there is the video capture. Audio is quite stellar sounding, and the framerate is smooth, including exposure. But the video has the same cartoony shadeless solid color look of the still images, and if it wasn't obvious from the videos, a very serious issue with focusing. A quick search through youtube will find that this is not an isolated incident, and all video exhibit this epileptic refocusing eye dilating problem, which happens every few seconds. How something so blatantly broken like this got rubberstamped and tested by so many people is probably the 8th wonder of the world.

Neither benchmarks, battery life, nor performance is actually that stellar, in comparison to other flagships of course. Then there is LG's track record of poor updates and class action lawsuits for faulty hardware/software (Optimus 2x) and you wonder why they didn't try harder to give assurances that this device will not fall under the same troubles. No major marketing push, with a tentative European release schedule and seemingly no US plans, really makes it feel like a product pushed out without the desire to support or make into a real success. The more popular a phone, the quicker the bugs are squashed. Is LG still aiming low with this one as well? It seems the Android duopoly between the One X and Galaxy S III has yet to be remotely challenged by anyone so far.

I love the phone, I will definitely check it out. Here is the some the criticism I found phone with the large screen need to improve:
1. The power button or wake up button need to in the reach with one hand.
2. The battery need more juice
3. More ram specially on android, I found 1gb ram is not adiquate enough ..... to take damson.lag.

Never owned an LG before and this is a good phone, I have lived with it for the last week! The down side is in the little details like, no notification light (WTF), no way of knowing level of charge unless charging whilst phone is still on when it tells you the percentage! Specs wise, up there with the S3 and One X but just falls short IMHO.

Looks like a nice little machine, but like the G2X was last year, it's not gonna last for long with LG being so bad at updating Android. If you're lucky, you'll get Jelly Bean, but when the next version of Android comes six months later, don't expect this phone to get it, LG will be too busy with their future new phone to care about you. LG just doesn't care about updating their phones, even with flagship phones, like the LG Optimus 2X was.

Unless you change your phone every six months, avoid LG at all costs, you'll regret it.
