LG Dare Review

LG has been a leader in the touchscreen non-smart phone market since 2007 with their introduction of the PRADA GSM model in Europe. Since then, they have developed and released additional touchscreen phones, such as the Voyager, Glimmer, Vu, and Viewty; each with their own unique features. The newest device to be released is the Dare, which is available through Verizon Wireless...

better touch screen than the voyager. just lacks mobile TV. the camera is very good for a cell phone. i might as well give my digital camera to my cousin.

people use mobile tv? fist it's not available in my area and the second I don't even give a crap about tv period! What is there to watch these days not too mention on a tiny screen what is the point? I think it's a gimmick...

Mobile TV is on it now if you go to Verizon for the firmware upgrade anyway. They were built with the chip, just not the software ready at launch. Honestly though, the selection for TV shows is pretty lame for me.

I bought this phone recently and was immediately disappointed with the touch screen features, I would barely touch the screen in oder to scroll and it would open up a contact or etc... instead of scrolling, because of this and the fact that the calender and contact function is not a full function as you would get in a PDA or ( god forbid a say the word...iphone) I was ready to return this phone ASAP and jump ship for the dark side and get the iphone. Patience is a virtue and after looking and listing to the review I learned that this phone is pressure sensitive and that it helps to push a little on the phone as you are scrolling etc.., WOW what revelation that was, to bad the sales guy couldn't give that little tid bit of info, it would have saved my hair from all being pulled out. I wont say that I'm not still entertaining thoughts about jumping to the dark side of AT&T but now that I know this it will make my exploration of this phone much more enjoyable, have some patience but also realize ( as a friend of mine told me so eloquently, and he hates AT&T) if you want and iphone then get an iphone, anything else is just an imitation and will disappoint.

I just recently got the phone and had that problem with scrolling at first also, but the trick is to hold and drag. Don't try to flick it or just gradually scroll like you would on a notebook touch pad. Once you do that, it will be a lot easier to use.

Touchscreen works just as great as iphone if you calibrate lightly with a stylus or something very similar. Mine works like magic ever since I did that. :D

If I subscribe to VCast,do I still have to pay an extra monthly fee to use E-mail on this phone? I need access to the major providers and I don't want to tack on $5/mo. What are my options?

The $5/month Mobile E-Mail is not required.

People don't realize how hot this phone really is. The Camera is excellent outdoors and the editing feature is amazing for a cell phone. Its it a s good as a 8 or 10 Megapixel camera no. But You don't always carry your camera around. I consider the Flipshot a failure. It has so much customization. to the phone. Just recently i changed the Menu fonts to LG Joy front, I saw this in the store I visited. Much nicer font thant he standard font. Some Verizon stores feel that you have to shock the person by putting the feedback on high. Most people don't need to have this. I can't wait till Verizon builds its applications. Everything looks clearer and nicer on this phone. It blows Voyager away again for those who don't need a keypad its awsome. Yes Verizon should of put mobile TV with the Dare. You know Verizon needed thsi phone. Verizon would of shedded customers to AT&T with the Iphone 2, and may still do.

I agree with Brent about Verizon potentially losing customers, mainly because in my opinion they should be giving current customers some sort of discount for sticking with the carrier. I went to get this phone yesterday, but when I realized that the full price cost (I'm still under contract) was more than canceling service and switching to the iPhone, I hesitated. To further compound the issue the free 8GB stick only applies for new subscribers, so I wouldn't even get that. I still haven't decided whether or not to make the switch yet, but if the price were subsidized in any way I would have bought the Dare on the spot.

The 8GB memory card offer was never only for new customers. It started out as a new LINE promotion, which was available to both new and existing customers. Now it is offered on a single line pricing plan of 79.99 or higher or a family share pricing plan of 149.99 or higher.

err... verizon does give you a discount for renewing your contract... the new every two deal says that 20 months into your 2 year contract you can upgrade your phone for $100 off the new contract price. that means you can get the Dare for $99 once you're 20 months into your contract. but it sounds like you're not there yet, and there's no carrier that will let you get a phone for new subscriber price just because you randomly feel like it.

That's pretty much it. I don't know which carriers give hot deals to existing subscribers. The only one I can think of that comes close is T-Mobile, and their deal is basically when you go out of contract you're eligible for the new subscriber discount. The new every two deal is still pretty hot, $50/$100 off any phone they carry every 20 months. Personally, I'm only looking at this phone because I just went out of contract, and I'm betting I can get someone at VZW to bend the rules a little to get me back into contract. If I still had a year to go then I'd probably just wait to see if an upgraded version comes out, or wait for next years hot phone.

Yeah, I knew all that. To be honest, I was basically just fishing for info; hoping a VzW employee would relay some loophole in the contract that I could take advantage of. On a side note though, I have always wondered why carriers don't allow you to add another 2 years onto your contract (up to, say, something like 5 years) at any point in your contracts life cycle, with the subsidized price. I can't really see a downside for the carrier, especially if they have scaling contract termination fees anyway.

So, the question is -- how open is this platform? Can anyone write application for it (a la iPhone?, or BB?) How many apps are out there? Mostly, in my case, I need medical apps (i.e. drug interaction, PDR, etc.) But it will be nice to know if there can be any apps... someday????

Both my girlfriend and I got the dare the day it launched in the stores and both of the them are having the same problems. 1) When I try to go into display settings the phone power cycles and will not let me change any settings. 2) The time and date has dissapeared from the screen and I cannot get it back because I can't edit the display settings 3) The face detection works about half the time...when I call a 800 number or even voicemail I often cannot get the phone screen to light up again so I can press numbers to enter passwords or navigate the menu. I've been looking around these sites for a while and it seems like no one has had these issues. Did we just get two bad phones out of the same batch or is there an issue with the software. Also the phones worked perfectly for about a day before these issues started occuring.

sounds like you have a few phones in a bad batch. we normally see repeat problems come in that are out of the same batch. go exchange those phones before your 30 day wfg is up
