HTC Windows Phone 8X vs Apple iPhone 5
Obviously, what we're dealing with here are two very different products. On one hand, we have the 8X's dynamic Live Tiles, which are animated and display additional information like upcoming appointments, contact pictures and current temperature, and on the other, we have the iPhone 5's iOS experience, which is quite static compared to WP8.
Even though WP8 is full of animated menus are all kinds of small transitions between screens, it's very difficult to say that it's the better-looking OS, due to its overly simplistic appearance. Meanwhile, all the app icons in iOS are so full of color that it's pretty much up to the user to decide which one they like best – the lively, but flat Live Tiles of WP8, or the static, but colorful app icons of iOS 6.
When it comes to functionality, however, we do prefer the “Live” part of Windows Phone 8's tiles, as it allows us to discover important information right from the homescreen, which is not really possible with iOS.
The virtual QWERTY keyboards of the HTC Windows Phone 8X and Apple iPhone 5 are very good, allowing you to type long messages or emails without causing you too much trouble. The portrait options are pretty much equally great, with maybe just a slight advantage of the 8X due to the slightly larger screen, but the iPhone 5 is definitely better in terms of its landscape keyboard. This is so, because iOS's landscape keyboard takes up almost all of the available space, while the one of WP8 doesn't, leaving strange empty spaces to its left and right.
Processor and Memory
The Windows Phone 8X, like all other WP8 handsets is equipped with a Snapdragon S4 Plus 1.5 GHz dual-core CPU, whereas the iPhone 5 relies on an in-house designed A6 SoC, the CPU of which is also dual-core and clocked at 1.3 GHz. The graphics chips are also different – the one in the 8X is the Adreno 225, while the iPhone 5 houses a PowerVR SGX543MP3. The latter has proven to be a real monster when it comes to graphically intense applications, but all in all, the configurations of both devices provide the operating systems with enough power to run smoothly.
The amount of RAM for both phones is set to 1 GB, with the one of the iPhone 5 said to be faster.
None of these phones offers the convenience of a microSD card slot, but at least the iPhone 5 comes in three storage size variants: 16, 32 or 64 GB. The Windows Phone 8X only comes with 16 GB, which should still be more than enough for most users.
Internet Explorer 10 on Windows Phone 8 is very cool, but it's just a bit glitchy compared to Safari on iOS 6. Nothing major, though, you'll get superb browsing experience with both handsets, but the iPhone 5 is a bit better. Plus, ironically, it is now Apple's handset that offers a full-screen mode when viewing a webpage in landscape orientation, rather than the Windows Phone 8X.
Unsurprisingly, both the Windows Phone 8X and iPhone 5 feature LTE connectivity, but they can also take advantage of very fast HSPA+ networks. In theory, both handsets should be able to reach 42.2 Mbit/s download speeds on HSPA+ in case you're out in the open, there's cell tower right next to you, there's no one else around, and you've drunk your Felix Felicis potion this morning.

With Ray S reviewing, of COURSE the apple device will win. He could find a way to make an iphone that's been smashed to pieces win against anything. Heck, you could put an apple logo on a rock and he'd hail it as the most amazing magical thing in the world and say it had premium natural design and a great solid feel to it and perfect weight.
Anyone else for Ray S NOT doing any more reviews until his bias is eradicated?

Just imagine if HTC would have introduced the same phone with end to end display, this phone would have beaten the hell out of iPhone 5. I think those bezels on HTC are too thick.
But still front of HTC 8X, iPhone 5 falls by the way side :)

I couldn't agree more. The LG Nexus 4 is much prettier than the 2010 inspired design of the iPhone 5. I rarely read the iPhone comparisons on here because Phone Arena seems to put Apple on some sort of pedestal, when iProducts are just repetitive boring products, and nothing about then catches anybody 's attention anymore.

Depends on the reviewer. I'd be willing to trust Michael H's review, but not Ray S or John V. As long as they don't constantly complain about the slight weight issue (and most honest reviewers who use the phone for a few days or don't hold something else to compare it to state they don't really notice it much) and give it a fair evaluation, I think that'll be satisfactory. More SlashGear, less gizmodo.
10. JamesHunt posted on 09 Nov 2012, 04:14 2 0
Still phonearena should underline the negatives of the Iphone , and not just shrug it off by declaring it irrelevent. Iphone is not God's own creation,so it also has its flaws.

screen: the iphone5 is still 15%-35% smaller in screen area even though users have been buying large screen phones in droves.... winner windows
case: with iphones light metal and glass and the HTC and Nokia phones with their high impact polycarbonate cases will endure being dropped many times while the iphone needs glass or case repair everytime... winner windows
weight: while I didn't notice the weight of windows phones in use... it doesn't matter as you need to buy a 50-80g case to protect your fragile iphone 5 in use, making it heavier than both the HTX 8x and the Nokia 920 which don't need bumpers / cases... winner windows
browser: IE10 on WP has been embarrassing safari with consistently better performance scores, 3rd party browsers and apps, has had full html5 compliance for years, and has unique features like session and video streaming sharing on your home xbox using Smartglass.. winner windows
OS: while apple stays mired in the past with non informational icons and lack of screen customization available with WP, beginning with windows 8, now users can have a completely unified desktop from phone to tablet / surface to PC... Apple is 5 years behind on usability
verdict: WP is easy to use and brings social integration to a very high level... skydrive / hotmail allow you to take EVERYTHING with you at all times on all devices...and WP allows you intuitive simplistic use that iphone is nowhere near being able to offer.... windows phone continues to embarrass iphone with no end in sight.... and the Lumia 920 32GB is $99 and the Iphone 5 32GB is $299 and the HTC 8X with 16GB is $199..... $100 - $200 apple tax to use IOS on a phone that breaks if I drop it.?...

IOS looks way to inferior to Win 8. So so 2010.
Guys from Cupertino should implement two modes. One for those who wants pure simplicity and the second one, for those who would like to dig slightly deeper.
I believe Windows will become a new standard how simplicity should look like not forgeting about eye-candy factor.
Saying that Iphone 6 is the best looking or crafted device is on a baby side.
Lumia 800 or 900 looks much much better. Smooth, plain design, yet not dull. Not to even mention fragility of cupertino's device. But that's only my opinion.
Every single comparison iphone vs the rest of the world is the same. The are either equal or apple is a bit better which is mentioned at the end of each page. Silly.
14. JamesHunt posted on 09 Nov 2012, 04:42 1 0
Also wp8 with black background and more vibrant colour would put IOS 6 to shame...thats why they used a lot lesser appealing colour combination.

Ray S. as far as I'm concerned you have no credibility as a phone reviewer, I've seen both screens side by side and the HTC 8x has more natural colors iPhone 5 has washed out colors the 8x has a brighter screen and is more visible in direct sunlight I'm calling you a liar and biased reviewer!

27. oldhamletman posted on 09 Nov 2012, 11:43 6 0
This review was largely biased toward apple..... worse, the reviewer didn't know basic features of WP8 ... he made assumptions about IE, third party browser integration, and a bunch of other things that are wrong....
- he played down the difference in screen size between 4 and 4.3 .... when you use them it's a major difference in usability... 13% larger surface area... line up both phones bottom screen edges and youll see what I mean
- he called the case 'plastic' and inferred it's cheap... the case is polycarbonate, which is a plastic, but it's not run of the mill stuff... very durable, flexible, resists impact da,age much better than metal... it's the same stuff the F22 canopy is made out of... it's not cheap and honestly if drop both of these phones onto a tile floor, the Iphone is gonna be jacked up and the HTC is not
- IE10 does operate in full screen mode, has better rendering numbers than safari by a long shot, and you can use other browsers... and it's been fully html5 compliant long before apple was
- he plays down live tiles, doesn't mention new sizing customization and info options on WP8
- HTC has released much higher talk and standby numbers, and they are posted on this site... LOL, maybe this guy should read his own site....
this author doesn't know what he's talking about with WP8, is clearly biased, did no research to make sure he was correct, and played down huge advantages of WP8 and HTC.....
this review damages phonearenas name.... if you just let appleheads take over, then nobody will take you seriously

After any review with Apple products they must send the results to Apple and Tim Cook will go through and cross some lines before they can publish it just the way it should be. You see? Apple is always ahead.

phonearena.com has always been one of my favorite gadget website.
But this article changes it all.
I've never read some piece of crap like this.
The writer is obviously bias to iphone5, the writer just favor iphone5 on every category by saying "the iphone5 is better....", but without a solid reason/analysis to back his satement.
I cannot believe the editor would allow such a low-class comparison article to be published.
I suggest the writer please just simply go to work for apple instead of trolling in here.

Camera samples once again quit taking 1000 pictures with Iphone 5 to get it perfect and only taking the first one with the HTC!

Apple iPhone is a phone that has more from the outside than the inside, is designed by Apple in America, so I expect it to have a home advantage when it comes to review like this, but in Taiwan things are so different.

I would not call phonearena or any reviewer fanboys, unless it is obvious. Reviewers are entitled to their opinion and I respect that. After saying that, I love my HTC 8x and really have to say MS took the phone to the next level. If MS and the telecomms push the WP platform it would be a plus. However it's sad to know that my t-mobile store only carried three WP8 phones and selling two constitutes as a huge deal.
Folks go out and try all the platforms, ask yourself what you need and not what people say....unless something is really Asinus.

Not a terrible review, but definitely needs somebody who understands the hardware better. The Windows Phone's Beats Audio is not a software enhancement, it's an onboard soundchip on the pcb that's REALLY high quality for a mobile device, listening to music on the HTC 8X for me was incredible, the sound quality, is absolutely brilliant, the iphone 5 also offers a very good sound quality, I would in no way say that either sounds better, and comparing the iphone earphones is irellevant, you pay a much higher price for the iphone 5 and these earphones are part of the reason, you could quite simply buy a high quality pair of earphones for much less than the price difference of these 2 devices.
Also, you completely disregarded reviewing the battery life of the iphone, I think that speaks volumes about your objective whilst writing this review, which was to completely leave out any flaws with the iphone5, as I'm sure you were aware after reviewing both the devices, the 8X is a CLEAR winner when it comes to battery life.
Thirdly, you are a reviewer, so don't be a coward when it comes to reviewing things. You can't say "It's up to the user to make the decision" People have come to this comparitive review specifically to understand which phone outperforms which in each category. You must come to a conclusion for each category of review, otherwise there is no reason to include the category whatsoever. Without a doubt the iphone 5 is a better phone overall, but most people look at phone reviews to understand the concept of "Value for money" with these devices. The iphone 5 is a better phone, however the prices between the 2 handsets are VERY different, and this should be taken into account when understanding the value of the devices.

The OS is the main part, and WP is so much better than iOS, which really has grown to repulse me now, just so old and stale
52. dougiefresh181 posted on 12 Dec 2012, 20:35 0 0
the htc is much more egonomic, and the rubberized plastic backing feels better to hold than the iphone. ive held both, and the lcd display in the htc beats the retina display hands down, plus he got the htc all greased up, and a rag would take it right off. the edges are also rounded than the iphone, he has the brightness on the htc down. he is very subjective about the ui, and bangs wp8 about tile shape? really? the landscape keyboard changes app to app in wp7. iphone is clocked at 1 ghz not 1.3. htc also has much better battery life, even with live tiles.it also has better cloud storage and syncs across all of your windows devices without syncing. very subjective comparing browsers. camera on htc is much sharper, clearly, and more saturated. htc has beats audio and the same headphones have to be used to compare sound. just punching holes in the argument on youtube
