Camera comparison: Samsung Galaxy S4 vs HTC One, Sony Xperia Z, iPhone 5, Nokia Lumia 920 and Galaxy S III

0. phoneArena 12 Apr 2013, 09:14 posted on

Since the Samsung Galaxy S4 finally landed at our office several weeks ago, we've been having quite a lot of fun with it. First we gave it a full-blown review treatment and then we compared it to some of the smartphones it will be going toe to toe against. Yet we haven't taken an in-depth look at its camera capabilities, so that's what we'll be doing right now...

This is a discussion for a review. To read the whole review, click here

@urbanphantom. When you talk down Nokia or WP, you're allowed to get away with it here at PA. You can report all you want but no action will be taken. Example, Troll is always in here putting in his $.02 worth of Nokia and WP bashing, yet he gets away with it! You should know by now where PA stands. They are a very biased site.

@slannmage didn't you test and do research before you buy? You make yourself look stupid coming here badmouthing your own device. These things aren't $2 dollars. You don't just buy it and say oh its s**t I'm gonna sell it. Seriously! Your just here to talk s**t just like the rest of the PA trolls/fanboys.

http://forums.wpcentral.com/attachments/windows-phone-apps/28301d1360349539-image.jpg So please tell me the S4 or iPhone can capture photos like this! The Lumia 920 utilized with the Pro Shot lens will mop the floor with any of these phones which enforces my theory that these are not the best photos the Lumia 920 can take. There's a whole thread devoted to the Pro Shot app that proves these camera comparisons are lacking.

RSIDERS!!! this is NOT a 'pro camera' site!!! If I want to get a good picture, I pack my REAL camera...

Maybe if they put andriod on the lumia somehow I may think about it - But I prefer to use my smart phone as a PHONE :p

meanwhile you are like the guy who stands up in an IPhone shop, and says Windows is wonderful... :P

This is an awesome comparison PA!

Please continue to make more like these. I would love to see the Nexus 4 and the Oppo Find 5 added into the mix if at all possible.

Also, one question, I thought within the Sony Xperia Z review you were mostly unhappy with the camera performance, at the time comparing with the S3 and others... But now it ranks higher than the S3 and 920, just a tad bit behind the Iphone. Was there a firmware update that improved the camera shots or did I miss something?

Sony's camera has always been great. You might have seen that pa is just samsungarena, making Sony, apple and Nokia appear the worst when they actually give the best performance and durability. Sony's shots appear much worse in phonearena's samples than the actual photos I took with my Z. S4's photos that I took at phone shops look much worse than Pa's samples. That points to a possible Photoshop (no offence, phonearena. ) Nokia's photos actually are much better, but the photos taken by Samsung phones have strange green shades everywhere and they look the worst. IPhone's sample photos look close to the actual ones. That's my point of view on the photos.

If I were you, I'll wait to see GS4 in personal. Then I'll buy it, then I'll compare it to my xperia Z, xperia Ion, Htc one X+, GS3.(too bad I don't have lumia 920). But as of now, xperia Z is the best (smartphone) camera I handled. Learn how to adjust the settings dumbass.! xperia Z--> GS3-->Xperia ion-->htc one x+.

My Gs3's camera is f**king saturated, I don't know why. But if you want true to life color. I recommend xperia Z. But if you want to be fake forever. Get your s3

What I see in the PICS above: Galaxy S3, 920 and iphone 5 pics have same quality but, Nokia lumia 920 and iPhone 5 photos have warm colors, Samsung Galaxy S4 Pics have more clarity. Xperia Z have HTC pics have bad Quality....

You call that bad quality? Perfect quality. You don't just look at photos from one site. I studied photos from all sites and photos taken by my very own Xperia Z. Bad quality? The most realistic colors, best detail and sharpest pictures are done by the Xperia Z and Lumia 920. Are you even pro enough to answer that? (No offence) Don't just look directly at the pictures and just say 'I like the colors of this one the most.' 'Ooh, this one looks cute!' Sony's pictures are the closest to the professional cameras (Not just pics in PA but GSM Arena, KnowYourMobile and some from XDA developers. Samsung, however, has the least realistic colors and strange shades everywhere.

There is little difference between the camera of the Panasonic,S4 and the iPhone 5.So the fight here is between the S4 and the iPhone 5 in my opinion.

Taiwan Investigating Samsung For Using Dirty Advertisement Tricks Against HTC By Adnan Farooqui on 04/15/2013

I am from Taiwan. Apparently what happen is that Samsung hire people who are not HTC users. They will pretend they bought a HTC and post fake articles about how bad the HTC is (bug, poor build quality.... Etc) on multiple big forums. And they will use avatar accounts to support the articles. Leave the comments like, "I got the same problem" "my friend had same problem". All lead to the conclusion that people should never buy HTC. This creates a fake discussion about how bad HTC is by 100, 1000 of people (actually only a group of 2-3 Samsung employees), which make the false statement believable.
This is not even advertising! This is misleading and slandering.
I am sure this not only happen in Taiwan.

Samsung uses very cheap parts to make their phones. The parts all heat up like crazy. I believe that this is as same in Sony too. Sony DOES have the death problem, but just once a week at most but not COUPLE TIMES PER DAY. The firmware has already corrected the problem. Using the newer software for over a month but not a single death. This could be happening to many more competitive companies all over the world. I've seen a post on phanandroid telling people an extreme condition of his Xperia going crazy the first day, just as if the phone has virus in it, but the post keeps telling people that Samsung is great and sony sucks. All those events doesnt even seem real to happen all at the same time. Of course, this is just my suspicion, no offence to anyone. My friend and I discussed a little about Samsung's quality (his mum forced him to buy a crappy Samsung phone) and found that many Samsung device's normally don't last over two years and that Sony phones lasts for more than 3 years (except xperia s, which is said to have some design problem Samsung could be using parts that lasts for a very short time. Samsung is a chat to me!

Oh, boy. After looking at the comments again, i just realized people here take pictures to compare which phone's camera is the best in terms of performance.

little they know that it's what in the photograph, the story in the photograph is what really matters.

so what if you have the galaxy s4 but your picture turns out to be like s**t? Wouldn't it better to get the Nokia N70 with 2mp but you take a really beautiful photograph?

We are not talking about photographs here. Here we are talking about cameras. Why does the photographers need to buy cameras worth more than $2000?

You should put Lumia 720 in this comparison in low light conditions is close with Lumia 920 and all the rest behind. No one can beat Nokia in camera department.

Lumia 920 is far ahead in low light conditions and stabilization.

I had a Galaxy SIII, an iPhone and a Lumia 920 with results completly different from you.

Galaxy SIII camera was a deception for me. Good for daylight photos, horrible for other conditions. Does not have color accuracy.

In my opnion the Galaxy SIV camera cannot even beat the Lumia 720 camera.

I like the site guys, but it's painfully obvious from this article that you're not qualified to review cameras.

There's no doubt that the best all around cameras, by far, are the one in the HTC ONE and Lumia 920. The S4 is just a bunch of extra pixels the lenses can't even resolve.

hahaha...in real life s4 pictures carry too much white in it and they look superawesum in small scren or super amoled. But once the picture comes to big screen , its totally a differnet story. SAme goes with iphn. As for htc the pictures look gud but once zoomed they are not as sharp as we expect( same for iphone and s4, s3 pics)..... If phone arena really wish to compare pics, just zoom them and then see what happens or check the pics properly from s4,s3 and iphn. Lumia produces lil oversaturated pics and sometimes lil dark pics, but once zoomed they are quite sharp and good.. Even in phone screen a pic frm 2 year old phone looks great. Lol. A biased comparison and result, dunno how much apple and samd@@g pays phonearena. Lmao
