The iPhone 5s is a smartphone that is in many ways better than its predecessor, and one of the upgrades it brings along is the improved 8MP camera. For today's camera comparison, we have chosen to stack up Apple's finest against some of the top smartphones out there...

The indoor and the night shots in the HTC One suck, I have the phone and know that it can do better than that!

Dude just accept the result. the S4 is by no means a weak cameraphone, but it is meant to be outpaceed by other cameraphones. Newer tech will always bring better cameras at its respective price point.

Cant understand one thing that why the s4 has scored "9" and note 3 "8"
Don't they have identical camera module?
And why do they say this:
"Samsung's best handsets, namely the Galaxy S4 and the Galaxy Note 3, are also in the game and will defend the company's reputation with their 13- and 8MP cameras respectively."
I think Note 3 has 13 mp ?:-|

Note 3 doesn't has that great camera as people think. Yeah S4 and Note 3 comes with same 13 MP Sony RS sensor but S4 still better in still shoot and Note better in video cause of 4 k. I saw a comparison in YouTube made by a professional photographer between Note 3, SGS4 and IPhone 5s in still and video, the Note 3 better than SGS4 in low light video but not better in still and colors reproduction than SGS4 and IPhone 5s, IPhone 5s shoot better low light still than both phones plus the front facing camera on IPhone 5s and SGS4 better than Note 3 front facing camera.

Should have done a test outdoor against strong light. I think being able to take good picture against strong light is just as important as the ability to take good pictures in low light.

I... It's... But... Why is PA so bad at this? Why does the results on camera comparisons done by PA always differ from those of other tech blogs, who tend to have similar results?

Why are you including the Note 3 and Galaxy S4, which have ostensibly the same camera, and the Moto X and Droid ultra, again with ostensibly the same camera, but neglect to include either the Z1 or the 1020?

Why are some of the photos you take almost ridiculously bad for the device? This is really baffling, as it seems that for some shots you are literally just holding the device up and clicking. It boggles the mind, and really looks like you are playing favourites here.

Sory but not everyone agrees. Pictures made with htc one look like somebody was drinking all night before shootingthese pictures. You can take much better pictures with this phone then that. I dont say its better then others. But really? There is ois inside and pictures are never so blurry.

I'm not upset with the results (I don't have a horse in the race, as it were), but I am irritated with how poor of a job PA does when it comes to their camera comparisons.

Face the truth that the two strong horses in the smartphone camera arena were excluded from the comparison? You seem to think that he's upset with the results. I think he's pointing out that the whole premise of the comparison is flawed, and that the methodology was weak. I think that excluding the two is one way of avoiding having the 1020 and Z1 overshadow the others, so might be good for a bit of fun. Still, leaving them out begs the question, so a good journalist should address it.

This comparison is so utterly full of shiit. How does the Moto X end up taking exactly the same quality photos as the Ultra when the X received an update completely improving its quality (with proof provided by sites like Anandtech) and the Ultra hasn't?

Also, I heard there was a very recent update on the moto x camera, was that up to date in this comparison?

Lumia 1020 & Xperia Z1 are not here coz they are better than these mentioned here.

2. G2
3. S4
4. HTC ONE
5. Droid Ultra

What was the point of the blind camera comparison if PA was just gonna come in and contradict everyone's honest opinion the VERY NEXT DAY!
And the left out the 1020 and the Z1 which would have come in first. They excluded them because they wanted to make LG look good since they sponsor PA and they are a little iPhone biased to gain more iPhone fans.

The 1020 I understand as that's a camera with a phone function.

What an arbitrary rating, and inane article.

Really, the S4 has more detail than the Note 3 despite them both having IDENTICAL cameras? Go read up the Anandtech review on that. It's the exact same thing.

Also, there's no way that those Note 3 pictures in low light are legitimate unless of course u guys again took the idiotic approach of using only the Auto settings only instead of the designated night mode.

As I suspected, the reviewers used an unupdated Moto X. They used the AT&T model on September 24, almost two weeks prior to the update being released for AT&T.

http://www.findexif.com?l=TcQZP

And they dare to publish these results with no disclaimers that the camera results on the Moto X aren't final.

This is one fail comparison. Pretty much all of those phones (apart from the ones bottom are the list) are using sony camera modules!! So all those fan girls and fan boys saying go LG or go Samsung. Well you all fail, the only winner here is Sony.

This is basically a software test on which manufacture can make the best use of the sony sensors.

Bye bye losers.

Don't be so stupid.

Sony always puts their latest camera tech in their devices first. (surprise surprise!). Which means the software has not had time to be created properly for that sensor. The exmor RS 13.1mp came out in furbruary, the same month as the Z, so how could Sony have possibly tuned it in time? Resulting in subpar pictures in most comparisons. Take the xperia Z for example, it performed worse than the s4 despite using the same(19500)/better(i9505) module.

Since the updates, it now performs exceptionally well if not better than the MAJORITY of S4's!!! Because only the octa core galaxy s4's use the newer exmor RS sensor (same as the one in the Z and G2), the other(majority) (19505) of s4s use the older exmor R chip which doesn't use stacking and pixels are therefore less sensitive. Which is why the octa core s4 produces better images than the majority quad core version.

Most reviews fail as they do not specify which variant of the S4 they use (they simply presume it uses the same cameras, Which it doesn't!!).

The best camera out there is the nokia 1020s(lacks features and is slow to process though), followed by xperia Z1 (which is one update away from destroying the competition). Then the other exmor RS chips like the xperia Z, LG, note 3, octa core s4.
Then the iphone 5.

Goodbye Losers!!

So, the S4's and Note 3's night mode have been turned off, eh? Try night modes on all devices and see the differences. PA chose to give lower points for video quality on S4 and Note 3 mainly due to poorer low-light shooting ability, other than that it is a fair review.

This is totally wrong. iPhone 5s or note 3 had to be first not LG G2 and s4. Note 3 camera is better then s4, since it came out about 6 month  later, and in other videos which I have seen iPhone 5s crushed s4 camera. This is 100% wrong

It's surprising how often I see that reviewers fail to mention that the Iphone 5s only records audio in mono and the other phones record in stereo. This creates such an obvious drop in the audio volume in the video recording. Also the 5s doesn't have continuous auto focus while recording video and the other phones do. On the 5s you have to tap the screen to focus when you change the focus of what your recording. It just seems odd that the absence of these two useful features weren't held against the 5s and thereby reducing its final score in this comparison. Maybe someone could shed some light on this for me.

Maybe the author should read his own scores. By my count, the LG G2 came out on top at 4 to 2 over the iPhone 5s. Not sure how he/she came up with a W for the iPhone. I'm sticking with Android and going with the LG G2 this time around. Partly because of the camera, partly because I have a deep distaste for iTunes.
