Camera Comparison: Nokia Lumia 1020 vs Galaxy S4, iPhone 5, Lumia 925, One

This is a close one, as most handsets tend to be pretty good at taking macro images. Still, the Galaxy S4 seems to be the phone that will let you create great macro shots with the least amount of skill needed. You just point the phone at the object and hit the shutter button. That's it. The Lumia 1020 achieves similarly great results, though with just a bit less liveliness in them.

PhoneArena excludes Sony on every comparison. So if PhoneArena excludes the Honami on the next camera comparison, well, I must say that they're "Honamily" biased.

There is just no way they leave Honami out. Xperia Z was horrible but seeing as Honami will pack a bigger sensor, it'll be atleast as good as S4.

S4 has the same sensor with better algorithm.. so there is no point in using Xperia Z.

its a sad day for journalism.. when S4 in night get the same score as 1020 and even 925. or in macro PA used a new term liveliness when 1020 get the same result as GH2 with natural color W/O oversharpening..

Im really sorry but its not worth it.. don't lose our trust with false information just like your galaxy S4 battery test when iphone and Htc one had less than 5 or 6 hour of web browsing.. when both of them are industry standard for that..

lumia 1020 is without a doubt the best camera phone on the market.. but with huge margin .. not 9 to 8 margin..just look at lowlight shooting you posted.. the only camera with detail is 1020.. sometimes 925...

For them samsung and apple are the only innovative companes , Others just dont exist..wake up ray s.

Biased scoring for sure.

Apple better than Lumia 925 and HTC One....IN LOW LIGHT...GO GET A LIFE! They must be brain dead to believe that anyone will believe that.

And then they write that the 1020 is best in low light but still it gets the same low light score as the S4....WTF!

Total grief. Xperia Z's camera is excellent. The most natural colors and crystal clear images. S4's images are fake. Although they might LOOK better, it's actually nowhere near realistic. PA's just 'Yeah. 41 MP we must give it 10 otherwise we will look bad. It's really horrible. Ah, those samsung stuff. No matter what give them at least 9. We will exclude Sony cause our rating will make us look horrible. We rated it 7 before, and people was angry.' Samsung or apple fan. The guys here. No longer trustworthy.

Do those china phones get the google play store yet? I had a Viewsonic tablet a few years ago when 2.2 was new and had to use Amazon and GetJar and such for apps since it wasn't play-certified or whatever. Powerful and capable tablet spec-wise, but almost completely useless for what I needed. Won't even bother with anything unless it's Windows now (until if/when something better comes)

FYI: You can have the factory customize Jellybean 4.3 International version with Google Play Store.

I have been to Shezhen and Guangzhou, Guangdong, PRC.

You can have every configuration you have because of Android being open source.

Even a custom 55MP sensor camera with mechanical shutter and Xenon flash with high intensity fast shutter double LED video light.

How's that for starters? :-)

For android i seen enough of quad cores wasted for no good performance same old performance with new and new CPU thats a joke OS
but 1080 is a nice thingie

You go check your eyes. samsung's photos LOOK good, but completely unrealistic. Nokia or Sony's cameras, on the other hand, give the most realistic photos. I'm not an old man so my eyes are still great. samsung fanboys never say that their photos are real, they just say the photos are 'great' that's cause the fake colors make stuff look really good. Have you ever seen child storybooks draw castles like bright grey or something? In reality it's just ugly dark grey with vines all over it. After leaving the infant age you will find that those pictures don't look good. Colors really mean something, and that's something that samsung is still far away from.

I went by an at&t store to compare it to my 808 PureView and well this lumia produces more noise when zooming in, in fact it was so noisy it reminded me know a Galaxy s3 sensor, I mean of course you can't zoom in as much on a Sammy phone but all in all the 808 PureView is still king, and I'm not the only one that thinks so, the 6th lense must be the one causing the noisy pictures

How can the S4 get higher score in colour reproduction compared to lumia 1020.
Compare with their reference camera the Panasonic the 1020 certainly is A LOT closer with more vivid colours than the s4.

The yellow flower is one example. Very bleached on s4 while colourful on 1020 and panasonic.

The over contrasted (in white) pink flower on the S4 shows how bad it handles the image where you dont see the contrasts in white as you do on lumia.

And look at the unnatural greens on the leaves for the S4 - once again trumped easy by the lumia and panasonic.

I don't know how MS left out orientation lock, but the fact is that 1020 is a better overall smartphone than S4. Hell, even Verge, which is not very fond of WP rated 1020 higher than S4.

Think about it, 1020, even with a 5 in ecosystem managed to beat Samsung's greatest because Nokia's hardware is just so much better than Samsung I'm not talking about processors and screen resolution, I'm talking about other practical factors like sunlight legibility, overall smoothness of OS, call quality, design, durability and toughness etc.

Lumia 1020 is a phone with a few years ahead camera, 2012 screen, 2011 processor, OS that is the equivalent of cancer. The lumia 1020 is also bulky and the worst looking design on any modern phones IMO (All windows 8 phones look like a polished turd.)

If your looking for reasons to get an android device over the WP then do not believe what these people on here tell you. The s4 does not have lag, nor does the HTC One or any of the other major phones that are running android 4.2. The screens used on android flagships are superior. The lumia 1020 screen is an older amoled panel and over saturated like the S3. The lumia 1020 is using a crappy cpu, if you play games on your phone the snapdragon 600 performs 2-3x better for gaming.

It is a DUAL CORE snapdragon s4 pro. The snapdragon S4 pro in the nexus 4 and 7 is a QUAD CORE. The gpu in the lumia 1020 is ADRENO 225. The Gpu in the Nexus 4/7 is ADRENO 320.

Does that explain it good enough for you?

The lumia 1020 is about equal to the galaxy s3 in specs (The US version not the exynos 4 version).

The architecture is the same, and rarely does Android effectively use all 4 cores. WP on one core is still smoother and more reliable than Android on 8 (granted the current 8 cores aren't true octa-cores). I'd like to see a galaxy s4 try to run on the same hardware as a 920/25/28/1020. Not only do I think it couldn't do so all that well, it would likely alienate most Samesung fans.

Windows Phone run fast on a single core and 512MB because it is a dumb feature phone mobile OS. It has barely anything running under the hood. No HDMI, No USB OTG, outdated Bluetooth stack, NFC incompatible to most phone brands and models, no notification, lacks mainstream app support - the list goes on and on.

Android on the other hand is a full featured mobile OS that has more functions you can shake a stick at. It is truly a MOBILE COMPUTER, a worthy successor to Symbian and MeeGo and can only get better and better with each and every version.

Apple iOS 7 is even better than WP8 in which it has adopted some Symbian, BB10 and Windows Mobile features - yes, even the older Windows mobile OS has more features than the current joke of a mobile OS tiles only WP8.

FYI... WP8 is based on the same kernel as W8... if you google or bing it at Engadget...
As for HDMI out, there's Play to/Photobeamer/Xbox Smart Glass so I can share my media over my Xbox 360/PC/Tv/Roku...
If you think your "smartphone" is a computer, then, try harder, because no serious work can be accomplished on a tiny screen (no matter how "powerful" cpu, ram, 1080p res screen it has, and don't tell about convergence like the atrix...that sucked terrible)
Symbian is dead (killed) by Nokia, with a good reason, so if you want to stick to it, good for you, MeeGo went the same route...
The main reason Nokia used the 808 to showcase PureView technology was because they were developing the technology during 5 years (which of course was the main platform at the moment) so basically the switch to WP didn't leave the correct span of time to implement it (until GDR2/Amber/WP8), so yes, the 808 was an exercise, same as N9, and they evolved to their WP8 Lumia counterparts, so deal with it...
I see iOS7 taking clues from WP8 not windows mobile, and Android too.
By the way, do you use all of your phone's features? How's your current the experience using apps and services in your Symbian (current version?) and don't tell me is S40...
If you want all those rage hardware specs, functions, etc., then I suggest you to get and android phone, and dealt everyday with tickling configurations...
For us, WP users what matters is stability, fluidity, ease of use and an entire different UI, not that row of static icons (widgets tend to be sort of it, too)

You're blind angry boy...
Do you need revenge or something?
I'll tell you why i'll buy a Windows Phone - maybe NOKIA 1020 or something that is available in December:
1. Android is lagging, crashing etc. - I've SGS4 and Note II. My google maps are crashing all the time or even worst - sending me to wrong place.
2. Android is hungry for resources and so called "SPECS". Java virtual machine is always hungry and slow. Even with 4-8 cores and 2GB RAM. I don't care about specs.
3. Android doesn't work good even as a phone, not to mention as a whole "computer"...
Take your opinion and don't think that all of us cares only for specs and functions that you'll never use, exept braging around..
Have a nice and successful week!

Tell me, how will you transfer all of those files when you don't even have USB OTG nor microSD when you're out in the middle of nowhere with no wireless nor cellular connection?

Heck, even NOKIA ASHA - a featurephone - has USB OTG.

Of course you prolly won't mind, since you are a simpleton anyway - USB OTG is for "advanced" users, as you said. ;-)

"2012 screen."

there is nothing like 2012 screen. it would have been nice if it had 1080p screen, but that doesnt change the fact that 1080p is totally overkill.

"2011 processor"

it has a 2012 processor, not 2011. don't exaggerate, people will think you have no serious point to make. besides, if a dual core wp is as fast as high end androids, then why should it matter if it has one year old processor or ten year old? don't get me wrong, i would like wp to have quad core phones, but its just not essential (for android it was essential because they need as much power as you can provide them).

"The lumia 1020 is also bulky and the worst looking design on any modern phones IMO (All windows 8 phones look like a polished turd.)"

what youre saying here is highly objective, but there's just no way 1020 is worse looking than S4.

"The lumia 1020 screen is an older amoled panel and over saturated like the S3."

No its not. nokia has had that option to adjust saturation since a long time. samsung only added that with s4.
