Camera Comparison: Nokia Lumia 1020 vs Galaxy S4, iPhone 5, Lumia 925, One

0. phoneArena 27 Jul 2013, 11:13 posted on

Ever since the announcement of the Nokia Lumia 1020, there's been little doubt that it'll be the smartphone to claim the prestigious title of “Best Cameraphone”. However, we can never be sure of something until we've seen it with our own eyes. That's why we're pitting the ambitious Lumia 1020 against the hottest smartphones out there. It's here that the 1020 has to face the Galaxy S4, iPhone 5, Lumia 925 and the One. Fearsome opponents, right? Well, if the Lumia 1020 is man enough, it'll surely be able to trump them with its chubby 41MP PureView camera. Let's hit those camera shutters and see what happens...

s4 don't have a lag?
Did you ever touch s4? Because i have it since two months and i also have note II. Both phones are sh*t because of the OS. It's so hungry for resources... Quad core, 2GB RAM etc.... and it still laging or blocking from time to time - for examle somethimes i can't pick up a call...
Do you use your phone for games? Then buy PSP or something else or keep your crappy Android device that can't close any app... even worst: it's open a lot without you to know or want...
Keep playng games and leave Windows phone for Pros.

I have over 250 apps in less than a month and
it - does - not - lag
I can close apps from a running apps list or use an app
You have loaded into your S4 a buggy lagging app
since I can always answer a call
I don't play games
I also have the Lumia 920 (MS Office support)

No it isn't. My Note 2's screen looks like crap compared to the S4. 1080p DOES have a discernible difference between it and the 720p.

You're blind angry boy...
Do you need revenge or something?
I'll tell you why i'll buy a Windows Phone - maybe NOKIA 1020 or something that is available in December:
1. Android is lagging, crashing etc. - I've SGS4 and Note II. My google maps are crashing all the time or even worst - sending me to wrong place.
2. Android is hungry for resources and so called "SPECS". Java virtual machine is always hungry and slow. Even with 4-8 cores and 2GB RAM. I don't care about specs.
3. Android doesn't work good even as a phone, not to mention as a whole "computer"...
Take your opinion and don't think that all of us cares only for specs and functions that you'll never use, exept braging around..
Have a nice and successful week!

... and exactly what does that make you, little child?

Tell me, how will you transfer all of those files when you don't even have USB OTG nor microSD when you're out in the middle of nowhere with no wireless nor cellular connection?

Heck, even NOKIA ASHA - a featurephone - has USB OTG.

Of course you prolly won't mind, since you are a simpleton anyway - USB OTG is for "advanced" users, as you said. ;-)

I don't know why you excluded the Xperia Z. It isn't the most popular smartphone around, but with the improved camera after 4.2.2 update, it definitely deserves a chance to prove itself.

Sony put a small sensor in Z and reduced pixel size so as to increase megapixels. The end result is not as good as S4 or even iPhone 5.

Xperia Z has the worst camera among all current popular smartphones.

But if xperia z was included here, I think it would have smoked HTC one for the last place.

A little note to PA:

Now that Nokia has finally made a mainstream phone with 41mp camera, shouldnt the scale be adjusted? For example 1020 is the best in capturing details and it gets 10, so shouldnt S4 get around 3 or 4 (1020 captures three times the detail of S4 (38mp vs 13mp)) because even though S4's photos are perfectly fine on their own, they just can't compete with those of 1020?

Isn't that the meaning of the word "comparison"?

It appears PhoneArena only does that kind of comparison to the HTC One and the Lumia 925 apparently. Worst PhoneArena doesn't even say why the low scores were atributted.

Exactly, If S4 gets 8 in detail even compared to 1020, then they are taking the meaning out of the word comparison. Before 1020, an 8 would have been fine because 808 wasnt a mainstream phone and compared to other phones, S4 is pretty good. Now it just doesnt make sense.

Check this one out.

I wonder why the HTC photos aren't as "crappy" as the ones that were taken by Ray S. The One can hold its own as far as detail is not concerned but this "comparison" makes it look like the camera isn't worth anything. And the Lumia 925 pictures i have seen are also very good looking yet it gets a low score here as well.

"Note: We're using the Panasonic Lumix GH2 camera for reference."

It's right below the first paragraph of the article.

They're comparing all the phones to their own camera, not the 1020 to every other phone.

A good camera is not about 'megapixels'.

By your logic of 'so shouldnt S4 get around 3 or 4 (1020 captures three times the detail of S4 (38mp vs 13mp)' the websites don't even need to host such a comparison. Just copy the megapixels into the box and let the computer compute the score, right? !

Your jealousy towards S4 just goes to prove that its a better phone coz you don't want Lumia 1020 to score better, you just want S4 to score bad ....smh

Megapixels do mean better quality if the corresponding phone also has a bigger sensor to go along with it. So if youre comparing S4 and 1020, you can either compare by sensor size or by megapixel number, it'll mean the same thing. If 1020 had the same sensor size as the S4, then what youre saying wouldhv made sense, but since 1020 has a much bigger sensor, it's fine to compare by megapixel numbers.

Spit on. If megapixels were everything, the HTC Titan II with its SIXTEEN megapixel camera would have beaten the Nokia N8 (which is still a champ) and be unbeaten phone-wise by everything but the 808 PureView and Lumia 1020.

did you even bother reading my comment? titan 2 had a small sensor and a big megapixel count, which is stupid.

1020 and 808, on the other hand have big sensors, in which case, the megapixels actually mean something other than just a number. get it now?

Or leave the scale as-is, and open up the top-end. 925 and S4 would get a 9, 1020 would get like. 13 or so.

The reply should have said "Spot on", not "spit", which is a term of agreement; I was adding an example of how megapixels aren't everything to further illustrate our point. The Titan II is a great example of how cutting-edge specs (screen size and camera megapixels and such) do not always make a great phone.

LOL !!! I continue with my minimum pocket camera sONY dsc-tx66. Much better !!! S4 has better Software and second place. NO REASON to buy this thing ! Look what the pro photographers are saying athttp://connect.dpreview.com/post/1305711237/lumia-1020?news ... "The noise is horrible, even with the noise reduction in those "low light" shots. Outdoors in bright light it's not terrible, looks about the same as the iPhone5, but compared to a real camera, dslr or mirrorless these are abysmal." ... "Absolutely horrible." ... "The point is to use it as a great 5MP camera which surpasses everything else in smartphone territory (except the Nokia 808). I agree that the full sized images don't look that good, but downsampled to 5MP, they are excellent."

"but downsampled to 5MP, they are excellent"

"which surpasses everything else in smartphone territory (except the Nokia 808)"

well, that was the point ALL ALONG. Did you really think 1020 was meant to compete with frigging dslr's??? NO! it was meant to be the best SMARTPHONE camera, not the best camera in world.

No reason to spend my money. I expected something more from 1020. As I told before ... I´ll buy the S4 and keep my tiny sony allways with me.

Good luck with that cheeseball creaky phone that lags all over due to the bloatware that SS up in it. Also you may want to wait until the S800 version hits as they may finally get rid of the lag by adding even more processing power.

By pro-photographers do you mean the troll comments in the comment section on dpreview? I have an account on that site and I can just as easily log on and pan the 1020, so can you and Troll. I don't understand why you would think the opinions of commenters on a tech site have any sort of professional credibility.

The only one there with any credibility as pro-photographer would be the author of the article who had this to say: "Nokia's 41MP Lumia 1020 looks impressive"

Oh and from the pool of so-called "pro-photographers" commenting in the comment section I found these:

"This phone camera or camera phone is impressive"
Given that the iPhone 5 in this test has worse image quality than the 1020 and a vastly superior camera system to your iPhone 4, I'm not entirely sure what you're smoking to come to that conclusion."

"the IQ is impressive and way better than other smartphones but the biggest problem with the 1020 is that its a Windows phone"

"Very impressive results in all conditions. Beats out all of the popular phones.?"

Great example of cherry picking.

I have the chance to play with my friend's S4 octa version and to compare it with my HTC One. I have to say that it's rather smooth. Sometimes there's some minor fps drops when using TW launcher but no big deal really. Most people use a third party launcher anyway. In term of gaming performance, the S4 in on par of my HTC One, it even loads some heavy games faster. Based on the samples, its camera is definitely on par with the Lumia 1020, which is quite a surprise.
Add the monstrous performance it's capable of, more features, better specs, real time multitasking and so on, it's certainly a better samrtphone than the lumia 1020 and by far.

The problem is that it's not on par.. It's not even close in the photo department
