Asus Transformer Prime vs Apple iPad 2

Pages
Camera:

Who knows how often people shoot photos with tablets, but in any case, the Transformer Prime delivers the more substantial one with its 8-megapixel auto-focus camera with LED flash, which so happens to feature an F2.4 lens and backside illumination. Oppositely, the iPad 2 has one on its back just to be there, seeing that it’s nothing more than a less than 1-megapixel count camera.

Upon snapping the first shots of the same scenery with each tablet, it’s brazenly clear that the Asus Transformer Prime has the upper hand when it comes to raw detail – simply, it’s that much superior! Despite its lack of detail, the iPad 2 actually develops the better looking colors with its very natural looking color reproduction. Well,  it’s not bad on the Transformer Prime, but it’s noticeably cooler with its tones – thus, appearing more bluish in both indoor and outdoor shots. Still, we can’t overlook the extreme grainy appearance of the iPad 2’s results.

Not surprising at the very least, the Transformer Prime once again is the clear-cut choice when it comes to shooting high-definition videos – even more when it’s in 1080p as opposed to 720p for the iPad 2. Quite telling right off the bat is the superior detail of the 1080p video from the Transformer Prime, which is the sole differentiator with the two tablets, as the iPad 2’s results appear too soft in detail to wholeheartedly accept. Therefore, if you want something to remember, then by all means stick with the Transformer Prime.

Despite seeing a larger count 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera on the Transformer Prime, its quality isn’t any better looking than the 0.3-megapixel front-facing shooter on the iPad 2. Still, they’re best reserved for the usual video chatting session and occasional self-portrait snapshots.

Multimedia:

Visually, the look of their respective music players in portrait are nothing to write home about, seeing we’re presented with the usual assortments – like the albums cover and on-screen controls. However, we take more of a liking to the 3D-carousel interface of the stock Ice Cream Sandwich music player since it offers some visual flare to its presentation. As for the audio quality with their single speakers, they actually emit the same strong tones that are extremely pleasant to the ear – albeit, the Transformer Prime offers a myriad of equalizer settings to refine its quality.

The Asus Transformer Prime is the obvious candidate for watching videos, supporting various codecs out of the box, including DivX and Xvid. Plus, its 16:9 aspect ratio is more adept to the requirements of most movies. Adding to that, it sports the higher brightness to put the iPad 2 into its place.

Couldn't agree more.

This would be like comparing the Blackberry Torch 9850 against Samsung Galaxy S2. Single core vs Dual. In this case its Dual vs Quad.

Yep taken down by a Quad Core. Lets see if the iPad 3 has a quad core and then rerun it.

If they do have a quad core I bet it won't be faster than 1.5.

Isnt it obvious which one is better? The transformer prime will still be better than the ipad 5. Lol but phonearena is too scared to say it.

apple claims all their gadgets tablets and phones are innovative but if you ask me only the OG iphone was innovative because it was new and everything but since then the os has only had incremental improvements. hell if you buy one off contract its between $700-$900. all it is, is a ipod touch with a cellular radio.

" Of course, it helps more than ever when it’s packing an earth shattering quad-core NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor, versus the iPad 2’s year old dual-core Apple A5 CPU."

I find this line a bit disturbing!

I know all the fandroids don't want to hear anything pro iOS since this is a 99% droid fanboy site, but...

Nice hardware. Too bad the OS is unstable and the few tablet apps there are are lame. Another "iPad killer" that will be discounted to $299 in a few months because its not selling.

Face it. There's only the iPad at the $500 price point and the Fire at $200.

Can you show me an Asus Transformer Prime that has crashed, to prove that the OS is unstable?

I agree that it won't sell like an iPad, but that is because of the brand and the status of the iPad 2, rather than how good it actually is.

I am very glad I don't live in your world where you can only choose between two tablets, namely the iPad and the Kindle Fire.

I can conclude, that you, my good sir, are another idiotic Apple fanboy.

I wouldn't be so quick to say which one is better because I owned a Prime and sold it due to it being inconsistant most of the time with the browser crashes wifi lack of app optimizations and gps issues when on the other hand the iPad 2 keep in mind a whole year older just simply works in every aspect and no I'm no APPLE FAN BOY but ppl spend hundreds of dollars on these devices and they don't work consistantly and my eyes that doesn't put you ahead of the game yea Android has wonderful ideas that blow you away and then it seems Apple just doesn't utilize enuff innovation sumtimes its jus crazy I could go all day ... In my eyes Android still has some work to do !!!

So android 4.0 wa released on January 11th for the transformer prime. In te time since then, you've had multiple OS crashes and sold your transformer prime. Even if this story was believable (and it's not), you are still 1 person with an individual problem. Some devices don't function properly. Your case is not representative of all transformee primes. Just as you as an individual had a problem with your device, there are plenty of "open box" Ipad 2s being sold at best buy at a discounted price.

I found this to be a fair comparison. American consumers have the mindset that "if it ain't apple, it ain't worth it" and I completely disagree. Apple's marketing in the US is supreme by far, and less known companies like Asus, Acer, etc. have to make ways to sell their superior products. A price cut of $50 would be nice, but for now, we just need less pro-Apple sites and more unbiased reviewers to help level the playing field.

No reason for do this comparison because Ipad 2 first is Apple, second is Old, and third ASUS is much better than Ipad

this review is the historic point for android tablets.. only blind apple fans can't see the following:
1.)IT'S THE FIRST TIME THAT THE IPAD HAS FACED CLEAR DEFEAT.
2.)what was preventing this for happening earlier, were: a) teething and maturing problems for android on tablets
b) technology wasn't advanced enough to give fluid experience on a platform that wasn't as strict and close as IOS

and now, for the first time, both of those factors are history.
the game has changed

I don't know if i'd say the game has changed. Asus may have figured out the tablet game and beaten Apple, but the other companies have yet to. Until that happens and multiple Android-based tablets are capable of outperforming the iPad, then Apple will continue to reign supreme. I love competition.

Only, and only in the mind of a fool has Apple's iPad has experienced defeat. See, you guys don't get it, and neither those the average tech company CEO. Simply put, the average person DON'T care about specs. They just want a device, which looks appealing to the eyes, and when they toggle the power button, just works, and IT do the things the end user wants to accomplish. As an example, before the proliferation of pc and windows. Do you remember the stupid questions (especially if you worked in retail) people use to ask? If I buy this computer is the internet in it? If I reinstall the windows thingy, do I lose my email account? I can go on and on, but for what. Apple has captured the simplicity, and users experience like no other tech company, it's their strength and advantage, and their stock reflect this.

What are you saying here? One is better because... its worse? Are you saying that when you press the power button on the Prime it doesnt turn on? because - actually i dont need to explain this one, i hope.

What are these simpletons trying to accomplish that the Prime cant do? Internet, check. Email, check. Music player, check. Anything else that the iPad can do, check. Now because the Android can do more (widgets being the first thing that comes to mind) you consider it inferior?

you, my friend, are an idiot. lets just shut down technology because not everyone gets it, right?

Did you not read the article?

It clearly says that the Transformer Prime is the better tablet:

"Indeed, Asus has the advantage of being a newer tablet, rather than being a year old model like the iPad 2, but when you take everything that it offers into consideration, it’s astoundingly evident that it’s the superior one."

JOHN V.

Why is it so hard for u to jus say that the display is better thn the IPAD 2?
jus into the first paragraph, it looks like, took you a while to write that the display on PRIME is better!
there is no abundance of PROPRIETARY ports! I have stated numerous times, we do not wanna hear your personal INPUT into the comparison! such as,

" However, we do notice that the metallic spun finish of the Transformer Prime appears to retain dirt and debris a little more than the iPad 2 – though, a quick rub down with a piece of cloth reverts it to its usual shiny appearance."

that is an opinion, it would not apply to me as a problem!
