Apple iPhone 5 vs Samsung Galaxy S III

0. phoneArena 27 Sep 2012, 09:09 posted on

It’s the battle between the flagships! Two handsets enter, only one can leave claiming supremacy in the smartphone landscape. For a good while now, Samsung’s pride and joy in the Galaxy S III has been tearing up the scene, and when the Apple iPhone 5 finally became a reality, Samsung made sure to let everyone know that “the next big thing is already here.” Talking the talk, we’re taking these two hotshot smartphones and pitting them against one another, to unequivocally proclaim which device reigns supreme amongst the two...

binerry your such a troll

if i put an apple logo on a piece of paper you would pay double......and why just so you could brag about how you have ipaper

the apple brand and the bragging rights you seem to think it gives you are whats keeping apple going right now not the exceptional product because face it the iphone 5 isnt top quality device

Nobody buys a device just for the Android logo.

You forgot to mention the following- the galaxy s3 will play practically any format out there without the need for conversion whereas the iphone 5 is limited.
Many people have songs in flac format and the iphone can't play those formats either. Customisable EQ etc. In functionality, in my honest opinion, S3 wins.

Plus the s3 has the convenience of usb mass storage. One can easily connect it to any laptop and transfer files wheres for iphone we first have to authorize the laptop itunes. Again s3 wins.

The s3 has a many more options in the camera and video settings too.

Then there is the removable storage , removable back cover, and user replaceable battery in the s3. Another round in favour of s3.

The main thing the iphone 5 has going for it- ios 6. And the fact that it will be supported by prompt updates for abiut 3 more years. GS2 in india has yet to be updated to JB whereas 3GS has started recieving ios6. A BIG win for iphone.

Having owned a Gnote in the past i have experienced samsung INDIA's poor service response. It might be better in the US.
I am currently typing on an iPad and i can say that apple's service is fanatstic.

These last 2 points make the iphone a winner, despite it's huge shortcoming, atleast India. One point review sites fail to consider is that for people buying these phones off contract, service a few months down the road is extremely important. And updates too.

Also, i have noticed that phonearena seems to be following the mantra that bigger is better for display. The iphone 5 display analysis is out on anandtech. It is and i quote 'a quantum leap ahead of previous generations'. It has a nearly 100% sRGB coverage and anandtech says 'we would have given such a display a gold rating if it was a monitor display'. To many people color accuracy is more important than over saturated colours. In the display comparison, other than the display size, the author barely touches upon anything else. No colour accuracy, no gamut, nothing. I had observed this in the htc one x vs note2 comparison too.

The author has a obligation to present the comparision in an unbiased manner, stating the pros and cons of both. The quality of this comparison was extremely poor.

iPhone 5 does hold a great potential, depending on the next iOS release

Very good article. I totally agree with PA. One point that was not compared is the capability of true multitasking. Coming from an iPhone to Galaxy S3 I do really appreciate the multitasking capabilities of the Galaxy S III. I think that should have been consider in this article too.

I have got to praise the author of this article for keeping the comparison as fair as possible in spite of the obvious bias for the iPhone. I agree w/ most that's written. What's unacceptable is the lack of emphasis in superiority of SGS 3 in multimedia: the phone has a radio tuner and transmitter, and a video player that supports multiple codecs w/o the need for a third party application.

I wonder why PA is always fighting for the Iphone. Admit it the S3 is miles ahead of your static overpriced Iphone. And please the Iphone is not a benchmark at all. On value per dollar the S3 gets a 9.5 and the Iphone gets a 6. Full stop please.

Somebody said it best... a close SECOND best. The iPhone is outclassed in every spec. For the price, you get tenfold more value and functionality with the GSIII.

I just wish the GS3 had a better camera and build material so people can stop saying we have a better camera and build material. If they can include those next time around they can really be the dominate phone.

Retina display > super Amoled display. I have both these phones and I have compared them myself. I had a question though- doesn't an in cell touch screen mean even a slight bump to the front glass plate could spoil the retina display?

That's s matter of opinion. I have used both, and hands down I prefer the Super Amoled. The contrast and color make the retina look dull.

Excellent article.

It's refreshing to see a writer on a tech website who describes the iPhone 5 without using such ludicrous terms as "Amazing", "Magical" and "revolutionary".

its weird that there is no video test in the multimedia part. maybe because the iphone has a weird resolution so it would lose?
about build quality shoudn't there be a notice on the easy to scratch back? the out of the box damage? the pink photos?
i'm not saying the gs3 is better cause i need to check the iphone 5 for a longer time but to be honest it looks cheap next to the big screen phones even though its made with better materials than the high-end phones. maybe iphone 6 with 4.3-4.5 inch screen and smaller top and bottom bezels?

r u all kidding @ PA? The iphone5 should be compared to a DroidX 2 or something...no comparison going up against the GSIII. Size, Battery, RAM, SD Storage, Processor, NFC, Google MAPS, do I need to keep going....

I'm happy PA picked a winner this time, before they wouldn't actually give a winner and just said it depends on your OS preference. Good job PA!

The SGS3 just looks so much better than the boxy iphone with large bezel. The iphone design just doesn't cut it anymore. The only reason it sells and stands a chance is because of ios which people are heavily invested it and it works to make things generally simple, visually appealing and it just works.

There are plenty of arguments about ios vs android but ignoring those the hardware design is a clear win to Samsung unless you hate the screen size.
