Apple iPhone 5 vs Nokia Lumia 900
Numbers on a piece of paper is one thing, but real-world performance is entirely another. Despite sharing the same sized 8-megapixel cameras, the iPhone 5 supremely shows its worth over its admirable competitor, since as a whole, it produces the sharper looking shots. Although their qualities are identical with shots taken with adequate lighting present, the iPhone 5 shows its worth indoors under artificial lighting and in low lighting situations. Simply, there’s a fair amount of noise and purple fringing going on with the Nokia Lumia 900’s results – while its extremely dull colors fail to highlight anything. Meanwhile, the iPhone 5 maintains its strong performance with its sharp visuals, accurate colors, and balanced exposure.

Nokia Lumia 900 Sample Video:
When it comes to music players, there’s no kidding that these two know how to make them great with their astounding visual presentations and functionality. In fact, cover flow on the iPhone 5 continues to be a standout in this day and age – while the Zune experience follows accordingly to keep us engrossed. Meanwhile, as for the audio quality of their respective speakers, we have to admit that they’re similar with their strong and distortion-free output.
For some, the saturated color production seen with the ClearBlack AMOLED display of the Nokia Lumia 900 might be a solid winner when it comes to watching high-definition videos, but the iPhone’s snazzy Retina Display also manages to enthrall equally as well. Therefore, they’re more than effective in providing us that tantalizing experience watching videos on the go.

are that bored to make this comparison john? or are you tryna give the iphone the upper hand....... yet again?
3. wendygarett (unregistered)
IDK... But I start to feel that the lumia 900 is actually better... Not that I trust what siri says...
Oh no!!! Why I start to think the iPhone looks like a crap!! :(
7. asseek (Posts: 164; Member since: 12 Sep 2012)
lol, Siri isn't to be trusted, except on this one

iP5: Mirror, mirror on the wall, who's the fairest of them all?
Mirror (SIRI): Umm...hold that thought, i'll be back in 4 inches.
Phonearena, this comparison is very unfair...i didn't care to go through since i already knew the result.

Agree. Comparison holds good when compared to devices which are almost equally strong. Well I guess Nokia 900 is really strong since it is compared itself to iPhone5.

I am still waiting for iPhone 5 vs. LG Optimus G. I know for a fact that iPhone 5's GPU is a slightly better performer (GLBench's website). But Quad Core Krait should pretty much own A6's CPU.

Lol iPhonearena, has a case of its monday,,,,, how are you going to compare, the 900, with a newer phone,,,, smh

How the •bleeeeep• do you come up with the ip5 having better outdoor visibility? Was the Lumia's screen on?
18. applesauce (banned) (Posts: 165; Member since: 26 Aug 2012)
Also, yes, metal body may feel better, but you should take into consideration that Nokia did the aluminum think 2 years ago and has moved on. Which is more futuristic, a space-age dyed super-plastic-like material like polycarbonate, or easily scratched and dented metal which impedes signals, something a phone has a very strong need for?
Was the 900 updated to Tango?
19. applesauce (banned) (Posts: 165; Member since: 26 Aug 2012)
And did it have the correct Nokia software bundle installed, namely the one that includes Camera Extras (updated camera software, settings, and Macro mode) and Microsoft's excellent Photosynth app? It's my understanding that those are being installed out-of-the box on new 900s

Clearly, Apple annodizing approach is inferior to the Nokia N8's because my N8 never scratched (after 2 years) like the iPhone 5.
As for the ALU body interferring with the iPhone 5 signal...probably not. The antennae on the iPhone sandwhich design are in the rim/edge of the device. Recall, the N8 had plastic ends where the antennae were housed. Not the case for the iPhone 5.

Same thing with the n9, I guess it's because it's a Nokia, the ground shatters if the phone falls

The Lumia 920 owns the iPhone5 in every single way

cept for weight issues.....lol jp but it is a tad bit heavy and im not sure if the OS is quite better than IOS yet......but maybe u guys like it better :)
8. asseek (Posts: 164; Member since: 12 Sep 2012)
no offence bro, but in my opinion everyone likes an OS and thinks its the best. some prefer the IOS, some prefer the Android OS, and some prefer the WP OS.

You should go for the quality.,not the quantity mate....

Even i, the suposed Android fanboy, will readily admit that iPhone 5 is the very peak in terms of technology and overall package right now.
It bests Lumia 920 in:
- battery life, probably (incredible 51 hours on gsm arena test)
- compactness and weight (HUGE win here)
- processing power (A6 is MUCH more capable than dual core Krait)
- ecosystem/apps (absolute no-contest here)
14. rickywinataa (Posts: 262; Member since: 05 Apr 2012)
actually, if you see the video, lumia 900 running single core previous gen processor can run smoothly, as fast as iphone 5. and that's still a single core, not a dual core latest gn processor.
even though iphone is smaller ad lighter than 920, not all people want their phone to be super light
26. darac (Posts: 2156; Member since: 17 Oct 2011)
ICS running smoothly on 800mhz single core and 256mb RAM
The point is, that doesn't meant this phone can in any way compare with the iphone.
Even iphone 4S seems noticeably slower than IP5 in running/opening complex, processor-demanding tasks such as the map flyover mode etc..not to mention the future games
27. darac (Posts: 2156; Member since: 17 Oct 2011)
correction, it's 512mb RAM..but still a 800mhz single core, basically a refurbished ancient snapdagon s1 with adreno 200
48. THEAXE (Posts: 5; Member since: 03 Jul 2012)
I bought this IP5 for my misus the other day and it feels like a toy-phone.....Had a couple of tiny dents, the charger doesnt work, and when I connected it to my laptop, it stuck...while pulling out, I almost broke the usb slot on the laptop....
So Im sending it back ....
bottomline:: Apple sucks bigtime...

As an overall package for an average smartphone user, it's a decent choice, but peak in technology? While the Lumia 920 isn't out yet, I can't openly include that for comparison purposes, but there are a number of other phones, as overall packages or single standalone features that offer better technology than the 5. NFC, especially coupled with software like Samsung's S-Beam for ease-of-use, various other makers' better screens, thinner bodies (thinness isn't everything, and I personally would sacrifice a few millimeters if it gave me a better camera and/or battery life, though I wouldn't want something much thicker than a half-inch, say the thickest I'd be comfortable with would be an 808 PureView), as well as camera tech. Like I said, decent all-arounder, but not the champion by a long shot
23. Stoli89 (Posts: 333; Member since: 28 Jun 2010)
Battery life? Hard to make that case given recent feedback from users of the iPhone 5.
30. LumiaLover (Posts: 160; Member since: 27 Sep 2012)
Features that iphone doesn't have...wireless charging, free music, mapping that works, phone that doesn't scratch when you fart, image stabilization...need I go on? Don't see how anyone can come to any conclusions until 920 has been properly tested?
and this is coming from a current android guy who was leaning towards the iphone5 until I realised that Apple doesn't give a s**t about it's customers...why else would they launch a phone which is either scratched out of the box or scratches easily with mapping that doesn't work? Oh...not to mention the adaptor you have to pay for in order that your nice new phone will work with all the connected stuff you paid £££sss for.
59. ikkuh (Posts: 37; Member since: 22 May 2011)
Both phones perform well enough to do everything modern phones should be able off.
What counts for me is the way Apple does things.
It controls everything, Hardware, software and everything in between. WP is closed too but compared too iOS its almost a different world.
And even i, the supposed Android fanboy pick a WP-phone any time over a iPhone no matter how technical advanced it may be.
33. smartandcool3 (Posts: 11; Member since: 17 Sep 2012)
Lol, +1 to this.
Did everyone notice that:
iphone5 just got only 7.8 star rating by user whereas the
Nokia Lumia got 8.8 star rating by user.
I think Nokia lumia 900 is still pretty much superior in many other ways than iphone5.
34. smartandcool3 (Posts: 11; Member since: 17 Sep 2012)
sorry everyone my post get duplicated.
4. jubbing (Posts: 150; Member since: 20 Aug 2008)
It's obvious that the iPhone 5 is better than the Lumia 900. The real comparison would be towards a true competitor - the Lumia 920.
5. asseek (Posts: 164; Member since: 12 Sep 2012)
c'mon phonearena, are you cmparing a THIS YEAR phone (Apple iPhone 5) against a LAST YEAR phone (Nokia Lumia 900)?? how would that be fair?!!
unless you do believe that the iPhone 5 is a last year phone!!
39. haseebzahid (Posts: 1844; Member since: 22 Feb 2012)
ow i thought they are comparing 2007 iphone with lumia900 :O dont see much difference over 5 year of time except speed :\
53. rickywinataa (Posts: 262; Member since: 05 Apr 2012)
i think we don't need to complain about how PA compared Lumia 900 with iPhone 5. what we should see is that even lumia 900, a phone that has less specs than iPhone 5, can stack up with iPhone on day to day basis such as battery life, normal usage camera, video recording, call quality & browsing.
except of course if PA is to talk about raw performance on gamings & etc
9. darac (Posts: 2156; Member since: 17 Oct 2011)
Just for some illustration - iphone has 6 times more powerful GPU and about 5 times more powerful chip overall.
I see the idea - top iOS phone vs. top WP phone at the moment - but pointless comparison nevertheless

Where is this vs the galaxy note 2? And yes, i want john v on that one too. He usually gets to the point faster.

Well they are both Restrictead and closed limited specs handsets, yet i like and prefer the iP4s, cause of the touch and feel and the rear flat back design! The iP5 looks to long like a remote and the materials used looks and feel less premium.
15. JamesHunt (Posts: 37; Member since: 01 Oct 2012)
What about the Scratch test and Mapping...?
20. Nookie4u (Posts: 131; Member since: 13 Aug 2012)
Honestly, i prefer the Lumia 900's design overall, anyone else??
24. applesauce (banned) (Posts: 165; Member since: 26 Aug 2012)
Yep. Cyan 900 owner. 5 looks stale and boring, aluminum body is so 2010, and apparently apple likes the 900/800/N9 style so much it copied it almost exactly for their new ipoof small, but substituting the black area for white on the face.
25. -box- (Posts: 3953; Member since: 04 Jan 2012)
I couldn't agree more. Love my cyan 900, and get compliments on it all the time. The iphone4Stretch looks childish and outdated
54. rickywinataa (Posts: 262; Member since: 05 Apr 2012)
personally i choose either plastics over metals for phones & tablets (both normal plastics & polycarbonate). Apple users on fanboy can say "that thing looks cheap" but at least lumia or s3 wont shatter or dent when it was dropped
31. Mobile-X-Pert (Posts: 565; Member since: 20 Dec 2010)
Iphone 5 looks like my tv remote control.
32. NokiaDrew (Posts: 3; Member since: 24 Aug 2012)
Horrible comparison. The Lumia 900 compares to the iPhone4s and it KILLS it! The Lumia 920 compares to the iPhone5 and guess what.........again it KILLS it!
50. Bernoulli (Posts: 2198; Member since: 01 Sep 2012)
Kills it is an understatement ;)& nothing against windows, but I think the 808 pureview still owns and destroys all of the others, just by the fact it comes preloaded with office on the go and I can type my lab report while at work makes it worthy of a college student, kudos to Nokia, too bad no carrier advertises it lol best part is that this is bundled with T-Mobile value plans, 5$ for unlimited texting, 10$ for unlimited Web with a 2 gig monthly allotment,I mean it's the best thing ever!! :D
36. cdgoin (Posts: 378; Member since: 28 Jul 2010)
Why compare a new phone with a phone that is already on the way out..? Its not even an Apples and Oranges comparison, its Apples and Carrots..
I mean seriously.. were all these comparisons simply so you could flood the front page with Apple IPhone "news"..? I think so..
37. Bernoulli (Posts: 2198; Member since: 01 Sep 2012)
I wonder how would a drop test work out, a phone that has a history of easily scratches versus a phone that has a history of being durable, along with being factored in Europe versus being factored in China Hmm...
38. haseebzahid (Posts: 1844; Member since: 22 Feb 2012)
i dont even think this is a legitemate comparison at all its of totally different class and AGE writter why you no wait for L920
46. THEAXE (Posts: 5; Member since: 03 Jul 2012)
How can you compare the 'new' Iphone with the 'dated' 900.
Besides we already read the comparisons with Lumia 920 and 920 was clearly the winner in almost every aspect. So thumbs down to Iphone5 and the author of this crap comparison.....920 rocks...,apple sucks..
49. 7thspaceman (Posts: 1290; Member since: 14 Feb 2011)
this is a strange lop sided test everybody and his brother knows that the Nokia Lumia 900 is a middle technology smart phone with a single core CPU and has a non high definition screen ect. The Nokia lumia 920 is the right match to go up against a high end Samsung Galaxy III or an Iphone 4s or Iphone 5 because it has a Dual core CPU and High Definition screen and all the high tech Goodies a Samsung Galaxy III or the Iphone 5 has.. Although I am a Windows smart phone fan the Iphone 5 might beat the Nokia 920 because it has a faster CPU , Retina display and has more Apps. I would not buy an Iphone 5 though because I like the Windows 8, smart tiles UI the Nokia design, Nokia Apps and Nokia's customer support. Nokia will still be making sofrware upgrades and Apps to it's Windows 7 seies Lumia line of smart phones. which means if you have Lumia 510, 710, 800 or Lumia 900 you're smart phone will still get
useful apps from Nokia. which is cool.
51. phil2n (Posts: 483; Member since: 30 Apr 2012)
john do you have one? (Lumia 900)..
I still believe in users review and not your review.
ip5 7.6 < Lumia 900 8.8... shame is it?
57. pikapowerize (banned) (Posts: 1869; Member since: 03 May 2012)
dont be surprise! a lot of tech writers of PA are iPhone people or not android folk too!! only few to zero are WP and BB likers!
52. pikapowerize (banned) (Posts: 1869; Member since: 03 May 2012)
i think lumia 900 is still a good buy! even though its outdated specs, it will still be updated to 7.8 which will bring few WP8 goodies too and most important (to me) is bluetooth file transfer and i wish mass storage too!
i mean come on at $50 for 2 years, it wont hurt! but lets just wait, maybe the lumia 920 release it might be drop at $30 LOL!!!!
55. jerahm (Posts: 4; Member since: 02 Oct 2012)
Wow. I can't help but be amazed how smooth the Lumia performed in this comparison. But that may vary in terms of how fast each device load apps but still Nokia and MS did a very impressive job with the 900. I can imagine just how smooth the 920 would perform at the time it will be unleashed.
56. AmitMajumder (Posts: 136; Member since: 21 May 2012)
iphone wins every comparison? how is it possible? I smell $$$$...
61. mcfee (Posts: 5; Member since: 06 Oct 2012)
LOVE MY NOKIA 808 unlocked phone....Not even tempted to try iPhone 5 ...I have iPhone 4s....Prefer my 808 to it unless I'm using my MacBook AIr then I favor iPhone a tiny bit....But the Nokia works with it pretty well through bluetooth. Still built like a tank..I also have no problem with Symbian and hope Nokia will not totally go Windows. Symbian is very good and for sure on a global use basis. Nokia make all your open phones dual!!!!! I can't use non-Sim networks...That is my only down note on the 808 right now and I got the unlocked phone to have lots of options without contracts.
62. mcfee (Posts: 5; Member since: 06 Oct 2012)
Does the pretty display on the iPhone 5 die as fast as the iPhone 4s?....The Nokia 808 display is great to me and outlast my iPhone charge by a long shot...Nokia looks like it could take a drop better... well... I can tell you I've seen more broken faced iPhones then on any other phone....so... when my Nokia 808 fell screen down on the concrete I thought it was done for......NOPE!! NOKIA IS STILL A TANK OF A WORKING HORSE PHONE!!! I like Symbian real well too.
