Apple iPhone 5 Review

0. phoneArena 22 Sep 2012, 17:25 posted on

Interestingly enough this time around, it seems as though Apple is the one that’s actually catching up to the competition, since they’ve finally brought a bigger screen and speedy 4G LTE connectivity to the iPhone 5 – while continuing to improve with a retooled camera lens and new chipset. Add in that it’s flaunting a new design, though still ...

Call me an Android fan boy if you like, but if I take the same features in "Just another" Android phone - it wouldn't get 9/10 anywhere today. 4 inch? Panorama? Dual-Core? Galaxy S II? And I haven't seen SONY handsets getting all 9/10's because they have tradtion of design. A good, balanced, great working phone shouldn't get a 9 unless it brings something unique to the table. UI's don't count, because it's a matter of taste.

Im an android guy myself but lets be real here. The iPhone 5's chipset scored exceptionally well in recent benchmarks for internet browsing and GPU performance. And everyone is reporting that call quality, which has been a big weakness in the past is now one of its best strengths. The build quality and feel is premium as it usually is. And the display is bigger and just as sharp.

It deserves a 9/10.

But personally I think that iOS6 is the biggest disappointment here. Apple has kept the hardware up to snuff but the software is seriously dated, and they have been borrowing on ques from Android for several years instead of coming up with new software features themselves. Its pretty sad really.

That and the 1440 mah battery. Android users know well the woes of LTE connectivity; and while a brand new iPhone 5 might go a full day with LTE, a year down the road it could be a whole different story.

I thank you john v for not being as bias as some at PA. I can have a more realistic view of the device... surely, to me this is just a catchup device that apple has made. Totally not the same as when Steve job was still around...tho i dislike him personally but Steve job seems to have a better vision of what will work.... this new iphone is.. not good compared to old ones, no more wow factor other than... the new map, haha

It's just a phone, I don't think it's worth the emotional distress.
I understand the 9/10 rating bcoz "knowing" how Apple is, the iPhone 5 is a good one.
Some people likes iPhone bcoz it works they way it should.
Some people don't like it bcoz you can tinker with it, you can't personalize it.
Perhaps the so called ifools, dumb sheeps are just supporting the US products. They like to help their economy in their own little way.

Apple is known to make premium devices which basically just works (except maps lol). I personally don't like the design of the 5. It looks goofy being longer and not changing the width. It doesn't look well proportioned for me. But I think a 9/10 is okay, personally I'd score it around 8.5. What I don't like is how flowery PA reviewed the iPhone 5. The intro alone was as long as some reviews of Android phones. And though they mentioned some of the negatives of the iPhone, for me they exaggerated a bit when mentioning positives of the phone.

Innovation, I dont think so... ok lets check it 4in screen check, lost the back glass display check, 4g LTE check, and finally apple maps check...okay minor tweaks I will not mention cuz its too minuscule...most of.these inhancements were on android 2.3 released almost 1 1/2 years ago...dont tell.me your innovating when.clearly your not. More like playing catch up to me...sorry but iphone 5...im gonna pass check that...

...and another wtf...ios 6 looks like previous ios 5, just bcuz you got apple maps dont make it a new series bump. More like ios 5.1. Come on people wake up...seems like the walking iDeads...lol

I don't mind the rating of 9/10 for the iPhone 5 but if you'll be comparing it with the scores of other better and competing smartphones then I'm not really that satisfied. By the way, where is the video for the iPhone 5 ?

i wont go that far as to say this is a biased review, however,if ip5 deserves 9,then i would expect most high end android devices derserve the same score!,but it never happens, ray please explain ! the pathetic fact is that apart an upgrade of screen size,i dont see any worth mentioning of innovations associated with it, e.g. same boring os,same closed system, these two cons alone would deserve -2 already. iam sure the hypes will dwindle soon, and apples doomed in 2yrs

Now after reading reviews on Engadget, phonearena and other sites, I had made up my mind that I will not upgrde to iPhone 5, iPhone 4s is okay with me for now............ But I have to make my up mind between LG Optimus G, Samsung Note 2 and Nokia lumia 920; I'm whole lotta confused that which phone should I select as my new phone..........????
And ya next yrs. iPhone 5s will have NFC and 13MP camera, then also ifans will line up in numbers to upgrde.............

I'm not an iPhone guy, but the anti-iPhone vitriol coming off in these comments is ridiculous. Not liking the phone or the company making it on a personal level is fine, but that doesn't invalidate it completely as a product. There's a really weird sort of circular logic involved in most complaints:

Anti-iPhone: It has 2011 specs!
Rebuttal: Those specs out benchmark every other device available today.
Anti-iPhone: Yeah, but other phones will be coming out in the future that will beat it.
Rebuttal: How is that different than the situation with every phone? Eventually a new winner will emerge.
Anti-iPhone: But it has no innovation. It's just an evolution over the previous device.
Rebuttal: How is this different than the Galaxy S3? Evolution not innovation.

There is a reason that Apple is going to sell a gazillion of these. It's not all marketing and hype, many people truly believe that this is the best device for them. Calling them iSheep or what not as though you are completely right and they are completely wrong is egotistical to the extreme. Disagree with the score, by all means, and provide legitimate thoughts and discussion as to why you think the score is unwarranted (as many people have). But make the discussion meaningful. A lot of the comments here are as "fanboyish" and "sheep-like" as they accuse iPhone fans of being.

after coming from a droid x for 2 years.. i don't mind having my iphone 5 even if it is smaller just because of the fact that it's simple, looks great, and works like it's supposed to. i get so tired of android hiccups and the fact that as soon as you buy the "latest and greatest" moto phone, there's a new one 2 months later. it's a shame, too because the droid x has an amazing build quality. if motorola used their talent with making phones as thin and durable as they do and released one flagship phone annually, while still releasing other mid range variants, like samsung, they could dominate. they could be the go-to android phone instead of the cheap plastic s 3.
