Apple iPhone 4 Review

0. phoneArena 25 Jun 2010, 09:40 posted on

Another year, another iPhone right? Well the Apple iPhone 4 is here! Now and in the flesh! But will it be enough to withstand the onslaught of competition that's currently catching up, consistently evolving, and closing the gap?

This is a discussion for a review. To read the whole review, click here

They are going to give iphones high scores to avoid death threats from apple fan boys lol Because we all know if anyone has the slightest complaint or negative feeling towards the iphone. It'll be the end of the world! I'm willing to bet that they will give droid x only 8.5 due to not having a front facing camera and not being an iphone. I don't even consider phonearenas reviews anymore because they don't even make sense anymore.

Yet another apple prayer here, The apple is good but this analyze is very very sub standerd, for other phones they say directly but for this phone they say differently, not sure how this phone got 9.5 when there are some standerd features missing. For ex: FM Radio Here the review didn't specify the amount of actual talk time, music play etc... Does this phone has the office, pdf viewer/editor Does this phone has the MMS and message forwarding Backup of data in the phone TV out the most important was the multitasking and without word on this, they have given 9.5, gr8 now we need another site which analyzes abd grades the phone accordingly. Great work phone arena

I thought this was Phone Arena not the Whiners Coliseum Never seen so many get butt-hurt over a review. The writer clearly said that it all comes down to personal preference. If you don't like the iPhone, don't buy it. It's your money. You constantly complain about the reviewers and the reviews on this site, unless of course it's something you personally like, then it's the greatest thing since popcorn and you'll defend it like it was your sister's honor. Many of you complain, but oddly enough you keep coming to the site to read the reviews and comment on them.....LMAO If I don't like the taste of the food served at a restaurant you know what I don't do? I don't go back. There's plenty of places to eat, and i'm sure I'll find one that serves up what I want ALL the time.

Dear jpropin, That's exactly what all are saying there was no other phone review that these words were said except for iphone, also if we dont read the reviews and opinions how do we find out which site is giving correct info. Please allow me a correction here sir, if the taste is not good ok you dont go back but you will surely infor your friends about the taste in that restaurent right?, that's the same we are doing here :) cheers

But it's the same slop served at this restaurant all the time. The Android FanBoys don't like anything Apple and the Apple FanBoys don't like anything Android. But of course they all agree that the reviewer is biased....LMAO As far as telling my friends about the food. Most of them are independent thinkers. The form their own opinions, instead of depending on mine.

OS 4 PRO: NO FLASH AT ALL, no full java, videocalling like a new stuff!! and the iphone has issues like SIGNAL, COME ON!!! four_zero40 i agree with u with the score.....

how could the iphone get 9.5..... No Flash support in the web browser No true multitasking for all applications iOS4 for iPhone 3G has limited new feature set Poor performance on iPhone 3G No quick toggles for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or 3G No social networking integration No info widgets on lockscreen or homescreen SMS tones are still not customizable No mass mark emails as read No proper file browser or access to the file system No USB mass storage mode No vibration feedback when touching the screen No Bluetooth file transfers to other mobile phones Contacts lack a swipe-to-delete or mass delete feature No SMS/MMS delivery notifications No smart dialing (but Spotlight is a somewhat of a substitute) No DivX or XviD video support and no official third-party application to play that The whole iPhone is too dependent on iTunes - you cannot add the same type of content (video, photos, apps) to the phone from two computers, a regular file management interface would have been much better

It's funny how all these people talk about how this phone can't even make calls and they haven't even touched one much less seen one in real life. Stop believing everything you read. I waited to buy a nexus 1 before I decidedi like android bit it's not as good as IOS. I bought an iPhone 4 on launch day and I've tried several times to recreate the left hand thing and I can't get it to drop a call at all. And the sound quality is amazing. For me and those I speak to. But I do realize that doesn't mean it's all hype. But you ppl need to realize it's just a small amount of lol complaining about the signal problems. I've also not seen the yellow dots. But when a phone sells nearly or probably more than a million units on day one, even 200 people reporting problems is a small amount.

i'm with sprint and i own an evo and love it..if i was with verizon, i'd be buying a droid x next month and i'm sure i'd love that, and if i used at&t i'd own an iphone and again i'm sure i'd love that.. what a great phone and i hope all at&t peeps enjoy their phone as much as i enjoy mine.. how anyone could say anything as idiotic as the iphone sucks, either doesn't like high-end electronics or is just being argumentative.. every phone can do some things a little better and every phone released has growing pains..

Nice Review! I completely agree with this rating! The iPhone 4 is one of the best phones on the market today! There service issue is will be addressed in a later OS upgrade. As a phone alone it's great! But the service can be better in some area! But you have to give At&t a break they have had a 5000% increased data demand since the iPhone launched!

come on.. the iphone 4 is amazing and one of the best phone right now, but this score isn't true. it hasn't these important points for me: No Flash support in the web browser No true multitasking for all applications iOS4 for iPhone 3G has limited new feature set Poor performance on iPhone 3G No quick toggles for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or 3G No info widgets on lockscreen or homescreen SMS tones are still not customizable No mass mark emails as read No proper file browser or access to the file system No USB mass storage mode No vibration feedback when touching the screen No Bluetooth file transfers to other mobile phones No DivX or XviD video support and no official third-party application to play that............................ ................... I completely DISagree with this rating! for me the real score is 8.5 or maybe, maybe 9 like the htc desire or evo, but 9.5???? I'm not say that THE IPHONE IS BAD or something like that, i've used the iphone 3gs and it's cool, but for me the future is android ;) ..

People really need to experience the phone before saying anything. I was always against the iPhone until the day I actually started using it on a daily basis. I find the experience top notch with little to no slowdown. It's the best experience on any handset I think. Android is nice and has its benefits, but the iPhone 4's presentation is intuitive.

Iphone4 currently have so much problem and lousier features than the other phone!(Samsung Galaxy S,Wave,HTC,Nexus which is way better than the iphone 4) It's just because iphone got a better apps store and got more fans! This review will make PhoneArena reader loss trust on them because of this selfish review! (N)

what a horribly biased review. apple continues to give us incremental improvements and by so, so many account the iphone4 is plagued with issues, yet it still receives one of the highest ratings this site has ever given. when compared with other superphones on the market (all android these days) the iphone4 simply does not compete. there is something to be said for its ease of use, and the battery life, display and design refresh are very nice, but google is simply better right now. who wants to open apps to see information? apple basically invented widgets for the desktop, but they still refuse to use them in their mobile platform where they can be truly useful. epic fail by phonearena on this one :(

Don't forget, NO removable memory nor battery... All of that aside, you miss out on all the the full customization, various screen/widget options and all that fun stuff the Androids have. And seriously, it is a phone.. making phone calls well should be top priority. I know if I were in a detrimental situation I'd care more about being able to make a call then having the Apple sybol on my bloody phone.

What are you 11 years old? Did you not read the review. You CANNOT video chat on AT&T's network, only on WiFi hot spot, you might as well go see them in person, they will probably be in the same room

The iphone fails because you can't customize it unless you jailbreak it, it isn't on any other carrier except AT&T, and its big features are simply things that were all on other smartphones but they try to act like they invented it.

I Call Phooey on this review!! C'mon Phone Arena....a 9.5!! I will give the Retina display thumbs-up, but it's only marginally better than the Droid or Nexus 1 or other 800x480 screens. I thought the 5MP camera images were foggy, and the JPG compression was suspect here. And FaceTime is a JOKE, how many times will you be on the same WiFi hot spot on a phone call??? News alert, go see them in person and get REAL face time. Do you understand the how much area a WiFi Hot spot covers, not very much! And the main problem here is making a Phone call (it is a cell phone after all)!! And here it is a failure IMHO. Losing 2 bars on the signal strength meter means not making a call at all when you are normally at 1 bar. Do you know how many times that occurs on AT&T..a lot. AND!! no Flash support nor will there ever be any, at least Android can do it, and has not publicly disowned Adobe! I would conclude that this Review was written by an Apple-holic...everything from Cupertino is from Heaven above and cannot be judged critically. Phone Arena, you need to be more objective in your Ratings (don't care how much ad dollars you get from AT&T or Apple)!

I've had this phone for a full day and gotta say that this phone does not deserve a 9.5 Mine and all the other people have this same problem of call quality due to poor reception when holding the phone a certain way. yellow blotch on top right screen. this phone arena must be biased. when you rate phones, use the top functions, hardware, specs. that are out and go from their. this site is riddled with ads and spams. dont be suprised at their willingness for a few bucks to sway readers in certain directions. Would the Iphone4 get a ten if it had a 12mp camera? 1gz processor? carl zeiss lens?

Hi! It was pretty interesting to see a 9.5 overall score after i read the pros and cons. I think the one who wrote the review is forgetting some really cardinal things, like....a mobile phone is for making calls and to communicate with other people in the 1st place. Every other thing which is in the phone is just a multimedia extra, which some people use, some may not. So these little things like calling, signal strenght are nothing compared to multimedia features. It's like if the iphone 4 was an mp4 player with a camera and a gsm broadband antenna which is not that important in the big picture. Just remember how the phone arena team downgraded phones for it's sound quality. I'm not an iphone hater nor a lover, but i will always choose an android device instead of an iphone for particular reasons. Overall score for iphone 4: 8.5 at maximum.

people need to calm down. its obvious that phone arena does favor the iphone over other phones (along with the pre and the evo) but maybe where they test things they get good service and there is ALWAYS a problem with a highend phone its first couple of weeks and those problems are usually fixed. problems that OTHER people experience aren't relevant to PA's testings. if you really want to know how well a phone works, use a working model in the carriers store or BUY it! you have 30 days to return it.

A phone is to make phone phone calls. Basic! And if iPhone 4 as problems w/ the antenna, besides beeing quite limited in video call, 'cause another iPhone 4 is needed, and Wi-fi!!! Is this a phone or...a iPad? I'm an Apple adict, i use a awesome Macbook Pro from the last generation, I have a 160 GB Ipod, and I'm willing to buy an iPad, but iPhone 4?? Hey This site has allways given their personal feeling and brand image to affect their reviews. You can see it when you check for example Sony Ericsson reviews. Usually they give it better scores compared to similar phones from other brands. We are humans we have allways prefeelings about something but you should be neutral when you write review. Must say that I have used Apple, S-E, Nokia, Samsung allmost every brand. Some are good for business use or to talk or some in entertainmet, some have good batteries and some very bad. People don't trust everything in this world. Try it and feel if it is good for you.

For an unbiased review and score that the iPhone is actually worthy of, look at this review by CNET:

IMHO the iPhone actually deserves the score on CNET. PhoneArena's score is way too high for a phone that doesn't work that well as a phone. I say this impartially, I loved the 3GS. But 9.5 is too high for a phone this flawed.

Every now and then, a product is developed that revolutionizes the market in which it is designed for; this is especially true for the ground-breaking technology introduced in the Apple iPhone. First released in January of 2007 the iPhone took the cell phone market by storm and has not looked back. Not only has this device changed the way we communicate it has also challenged the cell phone providers to keep pace with an ever increasing demand for data transfer and bandwidth. As with virtually all of Apples products, the “gold” standard has been set leaving the competition to scramble to catch up.
The Apple iPhone introduced to the cell phone market many innovative new technologies such as touch such as the touch screen, mobile apps, flipping screen and much more. Later models of the iPhone have allowed users to talk and use data at the same time; this is a feature only available on GSM 3g networks which I will discuss in more detail later. The most popular and innovative feature of the iPhone are the app’s available through Apple iTunes store. As of June 2010 there were 225,000 apps available in the iTunes app store (www.toylounge.com). These applications cover area such as business, social networking, music, entertainment and games just to name a few. A recently released app, and my personal favorite, is the Netflix app, which allows you to watch movies, and television shows on your iPhone via streaming video anytime and anywhere.

So I've had the iPhone 4 since it's release and I have a lot of positive things to say about the phone such as: The smoothness of the OS, it's camera quality, display, phone build and battery. On the down side, which for me is a major killer of the phone is the call quality. I would blame it on AT&T but a friend with the atrix that's standing right next to me would have a flawless quality where I am standing their cutting out and it being very choppy. The second thing would be customization. Beyond changing the wall papers and app folders you basically have no control over the phone. Maybe it's just an age thing (22) but I would like to be able to do a lot more customizations with my phone. Next would be the speaker phone, I would rate it at a 5 at best out of 10. Again choppy and just not as clear as i'd like it to be. No flash on it, that isn't the biggest issue but it'd still be nice to have. Speaker for music is again sub-par 5/10. For me the negatives outweigh the positives by far. I buy a phone to talk on it and the call quality just isn't there. After seeing the rating of a 9.5, and reading the review of why. I must really ask if the author was being completely honest with his review. After this experience with the iPhone I will not be purchasing another iPhone devise for a while and I've been an iPhone user since the start.

Apple’s Iphone is one of the most sought-after gadgets in the world today. It has the most excellent features that can mesmerize anybody – which just proves that its popularity will not be waning out any time soon. Iphones, by default, are usually SIM-locked to just one network – which limits you to the services which that particular network offers and nothing else. Hence, you will not be able to avail of the better services that another network offers, or the more affordable fees that the competing network has. Fortunately, this dilemma can be easily solved by unlocking your Iphone.
