A midranger that flies high above its class

AndyYan has owned it for less than year before publishing this review

Attractive package and LED strip, aluminum frame, 2000mAh+ battery, single-hand-friendly, MSM8960T SoC that even beats up my Nexus 4 in most benchmarks, microSD compatible, LTE and DC HSPA+, and now available with CM11! This thing is hands down the BEST midranger you can get! Or in other words, this does not belong in midrange - folks like S4 Mini and One Mini just couldn't match. Especially as I got this beauty second-handed for only ~$100 :)
Some minor setbacks, though: Screen has bad viewing angles, and touch sensitivity is bad, even with gloves mode on, I couldn't make it respond to my touch when my body is not in contact with the aluminum frame. Plus, it doesn't have good 3G reception. For the camera, autofocus sucks, especially when recording video, where it loses focus every 5 seconds or so. Also, dedicated camera key doesn't work as expected, often failing to focus when tap-to-focus works.
Overall, this is definitely the top of your short midranger list when you're out hunting for one! Won't regret it! (unless you really, really care about the setbacks above)

Build quality 10/10 Just solid.
Reception 8/10 Weak 3G signals compared to other devices I have.
Call quality 10/10
Internet 10/10 LTE, 42Mbps HSPA+, what do you want?
Multimedia 10/10
Camera 8/10 Autofocus and camera button doesn't work that well.
UI speed 10/10
Everyday usage 10/10 Like you won't believe this is only dual-core. MSM8960T is a true beast.
Text input 10/10
Display 9/10 A bit washed out at angles, and touch sensitivity is BAD.
Battery 10/10

Pros

  • Aluminum frame
  • Big battery
  • MicroSD compatible
  • LTE and 42Mbps HSPA+
  • MSM8960T SoC that's unbelievably fast!

Cons

  • Below average viewing angles
  • Bad touch sensitivity
  • Mediocre 3G reception
  • Occasionally wonky camera and shutter button

Best Mid Range Smartphone on Budget for 2013

gundamexia450 has owned it for less than month before publishing this review

This phone is one of the best smartphone that have been marketed in 2013. Reasonably big and excellent processors, it can be used in everyday usage. One of the great things about this phone is that LTE capable. For a budget phone, it provides a premium and LTE capable feel. It put it in different dimension than those low brand LTE capable smartphones.

Build quality 9/10 The plastic back cover feels cheap and seem brittle, but then again, I am used to aluminium back cover smartphone. But be careful because what made the back cover stick is small numerous of clicks that can be easily breakable.
Reception 8/10 It's unlocked, so any carrier with micro SIM card is compatible with it. That made the reception decent.
Call quality 10/10 With HD voice, call quality got better. That is a plus.
Internet 10/10 With dual cores 1.7 Ghz processor and LTE capable, this phone can run fast in browsing.
Multimedia 9/10 The walkman app make music such more easier and fun to listen to, especially with all these NFC accessories.
Camera 7/10 The camera is decent enough to post on social network, but in professional perspective, it is little under average which is a disappointment from Sony.
UI speed 10/10 It is very fast, it's that simple.
Everyday usage 10/10 Everyday usage is certainty possible
Text input 10/10 Simple and that is all you need, unless you want the emoji, then grab the app from the play store.
Display 10/10 Great pixel density, very crispy for mid range smartphone
Battery 9/10 Smartphones are known for poor battery life. With the innovated Stamina Mode, the battery life can last up to two days IF only for basic usage, not a heavy gaming.

Pros

  • Dual core
  • 4.6 inch
  • big battery
  • LTE capable

Cons

  • Plastic cover

Very good, but..

ahonda55 has owned it for less than 3 months before publishing this review

Hello, I have this phone after HTC wildfire S and HTC One V, and my sister owns S3, well, this device is brilliant, nice build quality, nice screen nice sound and those regular things, but, some of the most daily used features are not encluded, like turn over to silent and quite when picked up and pocket mode, no Beats Audio which made a noticable difference in sound, those were in HTC devices, SONY just added the LED and some very minor features wich are not that handy for everyday usage, sorry Sony, HTC is the king when it comes to software creativity.
This phone is cost effective and fast, but it suffers from VERY VERY weak WIFI signel reception, All in all, I like it and I recommend it.
This phone screen doesn't have the OGS technology, which means that there is an air gap between the screen and the touch screen digitizer, this doesn't make a huge difference but you will notice that.

Build quality 9/10
Reception 9/10 WIFI signal reception is extremely weak, but network reception is perfect.
Call quality 9/10
Internet 9/10
Multimedia 9/10
Camera 8/10 This is not a 8MP camera, and it will never be
UI speed 9/10
Everyday usage 9/10
Text input 9/10
Display 9/10 No OGS technology Bad viewing angle, cheap HTC devices are MUCH better this way.
Battery 9/10

Pros

  • Many, I really love this phone

Cons

  • Touch screen quality is not ideal
  • Camera focus and camera in general
  • A lot of practical features are missing

Peforms like a charm!More like a lower High End device to me rather than a higher Mid Range device.Camera sometimes work like a miracle but sometimes don't.It does possess with some software related problems. But with the 4.3 update,it will absolutely solve those and fully exploit the potentials inside this beast.Thankful to have this awesome piece of machine.

Build quality 10/10
Reception 10/10
Call quality 10/10
Internet 10/10
Multimedia 10/10 3D games runs flawlessly like Asphalt 8 and MC4
Camera 8/10 Image become very noisy and blurry.
UI speed 9/10 Lags when you open large RAM consuming apps like Chrome and Google Search.
Everyday usage 10/10
Text input 10/10
Display 10/10
Battery 10/10

Pros

  • More to a high end than mid range
  • Has Mobile Bravia Engine 2 that boosts the image's colour and saturation
  • Fits smuggly in jeans
  • Beats Xperia Z, Galaxy S2 and S3 in Antutu

Cons

  • Not so much in viewing angles
  • VGA front camera

Arguably the Most Cost-Effective Mid-ranger of 1st Half of 2013

Charlie_boy has owned it for less than year before publishing this review

What pulled me into buying a phone from the mid-range segment is that these model have almost all the feature a power-user needs, less the cost of the flagship devices. (I'm just an occasional gamer, so I don't need those quad-cores)

I was looking for an android phone with dual-core CPU, at least 1GB RAM, 720p to 480p resolution within a 4.5 to 4.9 inch display, with a battery that's above average. In short, a well-performing phone with some endurance. So after using the comparison tool I narrowed it down to these: Xperia SP, Motorola Razr HD, and Samsung Galaxy Premier.

And regarding update support, it recently got updated to JB4.3 (as of Mar2014) which improved it's camera performance a bit!

Build quality 9/10 Build quality is semi-premium: [1] All glass front (scratch resistant); [2] plastic/matte back; [3] aluminum trims. The decision to put all the buttons on the right is good. Feels natural.
Reception 9/10 Signal reception is OK. I have case comparisons to HTC One V and One X+. Xperia SP shines out in low signal areas, whereas the HTC 2012 phones are already without signal.
Call quality 9/10 Calling audio is nice. The extra mic at the back makes sure the other party hears you well if you're in an environment that's a little noisy. If turned on speaker, quality is just as nice.
Internet 10/10 Chrome browsing is very fluid (processor handles websites well)! Gives you great browsing speeds, if your operator supports LTE. This is one of the best bang-for-the-buck web-browsing phone for you.
Multimedia 10/10 If there is one aspect that this phone stands out, it is in Multimedia. So many options available to you: [1] Phone has Bravia Display and above average speakers in loudness and quality. It also has an expandable storage to put i more music and videos. [2] You're also given a lot of interfacing options: MHL, PS Dual-Shock Controller linking, and display mirroring.
Camera 8/10 Camera picture quality is an issue. Although still good enough for social media. There's something wrong with how the camera focuses. You'll see it focuses great a split second but the final focus turns out bad. (edit: Camera improved in the JB4.3 update.
UI speed 8/10 A highly clocked dual-core and 1GB RAM (766 if you check what's available to apps) provides a pleasantly fast experience. The only slowdown that you'll experience is when you open/close RAM-intensive apps like 3D games.
Everyday usage 9/10 Gives you anything you ask of it with little complain. Calls, sms, email, some gaming... You'll get through the average day usually without any hassle.
Text input 9/10 Pretty much standard performing keyboard interface like most 2013 android devices. Support for non-English languages in text prediction is a great plus here (if you live in a country where English is not the primary language like me).
Display 8/10 Below average viewing angles and smudge-prone. Forgivable at night and indoors. But if you're planning to watch a movie on the bus/car in the afternoon.. We'll it's gonna be a chore avoiding the sun's reflection... Oh, and there is also degraded touchscreen responsiveness when you connect it to a computer. Just try not to use it when syncing files, i guess.
Battery 10/10 Battery performance is great due to two things: [1] Good battery capacity of 2300 mAh. Gets you through the day with some juice left. [2] Performance management tools: Stamina mode, Low-power mode, and Location-based WiFi. They get you through those busy phone-intensive days.

Pros

  • LTE on a less expensive device
  • Tons of Multimedia features
  • Great Battery life & Power Management

Cons

  • Camera quality and focus (pre 4.3 update)
  • Display angles and smudge-proneness

Affordable price tag with Premium Feel

najib1312 has owned it for less than year before publishing this review

Bought this phone 3 months back for USD307. Definitely a bargain price for this specs. LTE 4G is an added bonus. The real show stealers however are Adreno 320 GPU, Transparent bar (I personally LOVE this) and the battery life (1.5 days on average).

DISADVANTAGES:
1) Camera - It's good. But when compared to other phone in similar price segment such as Xperia T/TX/V/ION/S/SL, the results are clearly inferior. The good thing is u can take a shot in less than 2 seconds and it's perfectly usable for sharing in social media sites.

2) Internal storage is limited to 5.5GB. For heavy gamers, even though the performance is flawless, the storage is a limitation.

Dont Buy White Version

VictorHu has owned it for less than month before publishing this review

OVERALL I like this phone.With LTE..SD card slot..corning gorilla glass..HD quality display...HD camera.

But the camera results is noisy when you zoom it (5MP) but it clear when 3.2MP.
The white version I had, got spoiled in silver paint for aluminium frame. One inside the edge between aluminium frame and the glass. Other in USB port. It looks the quality of silver paint is bad. WHEN I try to zoom it all over silver paint, I found many spoiled silver paint. I try to replace it one to one replacement on the store and I got same defect for all white (me and store open 3 sealed xperia sp white). When I look at other color (black), black version got smooth paint on the aluminium frame.

That is why I suggest you don't buy white version. Buy black or red.

This phone worth of it except the white version.

Build quality 5/10 White version has low quality finishing for silver paint on aluminium frame.
Reception 10/10
Call quality 9/10
Internet 10/10
Multimedia 10/10
Camera 6/10 Zoom the result and you will find a noise. Seems like software issues. But it goes well if setting was 3.2mp.
UI speed 10/10
Everyday usage 8/10
Text input 10/10
Display 10/10
Battery 8/10

Pros

  • All Future function ready such as LTE, big screen.
  • easy grip and cool lock button.
  • Illumination light

Cons

  • noise on camera result (pic).
  • bad finishing quality for white version.
  • navigation button in display.
  • no dual network.

Great Phone

samuelcl has owned it for less than month before publishing this review

The phone is great, it lasts me a couple of days even after heavy usage. And the LED strip is a really nice touch to the phone, It gives the phone a distinct look as compared to all most all the phones out there that look like a square with a round edge slab.

Build quality 10/10 No problems with the build quality, it just looks terrific (especially with the notification bar in the dark)
Reception 10/10 No problem with the phone's radios.
Call quality 10/10 Pretty loud speaker and doesn't have any stuttering in the sound.
Internet 9/10 Has somewhat a lesser wifi signal receiving range than my old phone
Multimedia 10/10 Haven't experienced any problems with my apps.
Camera 7/10 The compression algorithms ruined some of the photos I took.
UI speed 10/10 Swift and capable of multitasking.
Everyday usage 10/10 Lasts me an average of 2 days even after using a PSP emulator, browsing the web, texting and listening to music.
Text input 10/10 The on-screen keyboard is big enough to fit my fingers without the problem of sliding to other keys.
Display 10/10 Great display, crisp and bright.

sony's [sp]ecial

bhaskarkumar has owned it for less than month before publishing this review

best upper mid-range product
if u want an high-end performance at a decent price tag from a trusted brand go for it without any hesitation.
better than its competiters in this price range.
it also beats all the flagship models of last year like samsung galaxy s3 and HTC one x.

Build quality 10/10 it is surrounded by aluminium frame with plastic back panel(it is so thin and delicate)with signature power button. the transparent strip below is just awsome. it is mixture of metal and plastic and coated by corning gorilla glass for the display in one word about its build quality and looks [AWSOME]
Reception 10/10 its signal reception is good without any breakdowns
Call quality 10/10 call quality is also great can attend the calls even in noisy places
Internet 10/10 it has chrome as default browser. it can load even quite heavy pages with ease.
Multimedia 10/10 sony is specialist in this category.it is a winner among its rivals in this category. it has sonys media applications like walkman, movies, and album it is also powered by bravia engine 2 which is a treat to watch videos. it has also other apps like track id,FM radio to users delight.
Camera 8/10 it has 8 megapixel camera with exmor RS sensor. photos produced are just average. pepole who love to take pictures will be a bit dissapointed. but for normal use it is decent.
UI speed 10/10 it has snappdragon pro processor which is clocked at 1.7 GHZ and 1 gb ram. it can run any kind of application or game pretty smooth. even on multitasking there is zero lag.
Everyday usage 10/10
Text input 10/10 text input is good. it also supports number of regional languages.
Display 9/10 it has an 720 p resolution screen. display is pretty crisp and sharp.it is also powered by mobile bravia engine 2. viewing angles are mediocre but all the users will operate in head on position so its not a big deal. over all its a good display.
Battery 10/10 it has battery capacity of 2370 MAH which is more than capacity of sony's flagship xperia z. for heavy users it can last a day for moderate users it can last more than a day.

Pros

  • good looks
  • decent battery back up
  • fast processor

Cons

  • average camera

No doubt it's the best phone at this range. It's a beast ! beats the hell out of the S3 like it's nothing. People might say that S3 is better because it's a quad core. Well guess what you could google it if you want to a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro Dual Core processor is way above the Exynos Quad Core and if you need more proof, the phone's scores in Antutu is 16486 , Quadrant is 7584 and Nenamark is 59.9 FPS . Scores which the S3 couldn't even dream of. And it even packs the monster Adreno 320 GPU, the same one used in Xperia Z & ZL. Battery backup is really good indeed. Lasts a whole day with moderate usage like gaming , watching videos and listening to music and also with the internet switched on the whole time. The LED strip on the bottom is indeed an attraction. Don't hesitate ! Just go for it.

Best Mid Range Android Phone Ever

pritamraj18 has owned it for less than 3 months before publishing this review

Awesome Phone in its Range.
4.6inch Screen with Sony's own Bravia Engine,
1.7ghz processor,
Android 4.1.2,
A days battery backup with quite all types of uses,
Good camera,
A transparent light strip at the bottom which is quite sexy,
All games run very smoothly indeed.
What more do one need... Best phone till date.

Build quality 9/10 Sleeky Slim Design, Looks Very Stylish
Reception 9/10 Very good network reception shown by this phone.
Call quality 9/10 Very good audio & video clarity for voice calls & video calls.
Internet 9/10 Very Fast net services, but make sure you have a good internet service on your mobile network
Multimedia 9/10 Awesome Walkman player as always, which is the best feature in a SONY phone. Wish it could provide some more features like lyrics download in its inbuilt Walkman Player
Camera 6/10 Overall Nice Camera. Colors are little warm, but one can download any photo editing software from play store to suit themselves.
UI speed 9/10 Android 4.1.2, what more do I have to say. Hope sony will keep updating it till long with respect new to new android versions
Everyday usage 9/10
Text input 9/10
Display 9/10 4.6inch is more than enough. I dont wana carry a phone which looks like a big rectangular box in my pocket. This phone is just the right size for me.
Battery 7/10 Good Battery BackUp. Atleast 24hrs backup with some gaming, lots of music, video playing & internet accessing. What more do you need??

Pros

  • S4 Processor
  • High Graphics 4 all types of games
  • Awesome Battery Backup
  • LED strip

Cons

  • Camera pictures not upto mark
