Nokia says its a 5MP resolution but actually gives 38mp resolution?

jacobspeeds posted on 27 Feb 2012, 10:43

Can anyone explain it to me? I heard they oversampled 7 pixels into 1 SUPER pixel. Pictures of 5MP resolution but when i checked some original samples, they were 7152X5368 which is a huge resolution equivalent to a 38MP image! This doesn't make sense!

I cant believe nokia is into such an wonderful product, im sure this is going to be a massive hit of this year, its 41 megapixel camera is the key feature of this product if this situation continues im sure there will be no use for digicams, then all digicam companies will start producing mobile phones, I like the way you guys presented your website good keep rocking:) ...

You can choose the resolution of your photos; 3, 5, 8 as standard or max it out at 34 or 38. Many samples so far has been at max res to show off the cameras abilities, but ironically for most people the low res photos are the most interesting. The full 38 mp will still be utilized when taking lower res photos, though...

jacobspeeds;

The 808's defualt setting is in the PureView mode, at 5MP. This means if you are in a 4:3 format it uses 38MP of sensor real estate to oversample the native pixels at a roughly 7:1 ratio and algorithmcally create pactically noiseless and larger super pixels. The 5MP default results in file sizes more easily managed, stored and used in normal routines.

However, the camera is more than flexible enought to allow for FULL use of the resolution, with up to 34MP in 16:9 format and 38MP in 4:3 format. Some of the samples on Flicker, etc are in FULL resolution, NOT the default. Of course, full resolution does not deliver the benefit of PureView oversampling.

nokia fan here but very disapointed about front facing camera, only 0.3MP? 38MP rear cam? can you move 1MP from 38MP and put it on front cam?
