Green LED

Why does the green led stop blinking after a few minutes even if I haven't read or even woke up the phone? On my old Droid I use to see the green light until I picked up the message and or voicemail. I also notice it doesn't blink when I receive a message when it is charging? I wonder if this will be fixed in the first software upgrade?????
