iPhone 5 headed to Cricket, to launch on September 28

0. phoneArena posted on 13 Sep 2012, 07:57

AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint won't be the only U.S. carriers that you'll be able to get an iPhone 5 from. Cricket just announced that it is hopping on the bandwagon too and will be offering the iPhone 5 starting September 28, which is a week after the smartphone is scheduled to launch via the big boys...

$499??? Who the hell has that type of money? I know people on pre-pay Cricket surely don't! LOL

I know your feels bro, but you have to think of the type of money they are saving every two years as to what some on Verizon or AT&T pays for service.

Buying the phone at $399 or even $499, they still make out better than people like me on Verizon, in the matter of 4-5 months on buying the phone at $199, and paying $100+ a month...

but anyways. Galaxy Nexus FTW... :P iPhone is cool too though... lol

Yeah but the level of phone service they get is comical. Cricket doesn't come close to providing quality service. Marginal service is about the best you will get on Cricket, even if you are in a major city.

Most true, but if you were on Cricket then it's a good option.

Anyone know if you can just buy the iPhone from them at $499 and then quit their service? Would that not be an easy way to get a cheaper iPhone.

considering cricket is no contract, you could.

Yea I thought people went to prepaid to save money.

Like skymitch says below, over the 2 years you would normally be locked into a contract you will save. And you also have to option to quit without a massive ETF or having a device with a bad ESN if you refuse to pay

4. rkelly posted on 13 Sep 2012, 09:02 1

Yes that make since, if you have $500.00 to put up front.

7. Jyakotu posted on 13 Sep 2012, 12:29

This is why prepaid GSM will never catch on in the USA. Most people right now either don't have over $500 or don't want to spend over $500 to spend on a cell phone. While we'd get lower monthly prices, we'd still have to shell out a ton of money if we wanted the latest and greatest smartphones.

Wonder if it'll support Cricket's LTE network that is only available in one city. As for why/how someone would pay $500 for a phone on a pre-paid network, Crickets "unlimited" plan for the iPhone is $55 per month compared to Verizon & At&t's $120-$150 per month. Over 2yrs, on Cricket a person would pay $1320 (plus taxes and fees) but on Verizon & At&t they would be spending anywhere from $2880-$3600 (plus taxes and fees). That's a savings of $1560-$2280, so $500 up front might seem like a lot, but over time it would be saved.

Cheap crappy service is still crap. If you save a lot of money but get horrible download speeds, what's the point?

Im more interested to know if it will hit Virgin Mobile.
