iPhone 3GS to get iOS 6, first-gen iPad might pass
0. phoneArena 11 Jun 2012, 02:01 posted on
For those who own a first-gen iPad, the iOS 6 announcement might not be that exciting of an event, since the tablet might not get treated to an update. Links to a beta version of iOS 6 went live online just recently, and an iPad version was not on the download list...

Well, it's interesting that the 3GS is getting iOS 6. Considering how s**tty 5 runs on it (virtually eliminating any hope of smooth performance), I hope they at least took that into consideration.

or they can do what moto does.. just forget about the devices right?

For the first time, even though I am not an apple fanboy, I am very happy for apple on updating the iphone 3gs even though it was released a long time ago unlike other manufacturers who don't want to update old devices so they could just get more money, which is really unfair to their customers

Maybe it's because other manufacturers don't still sell phones that are going on 3 years old because they've moved on, and the customers with those 3 year old phones are usually looking to get new ones anyway.
You've used a 3GS with 5 on it, right? It sucks. The smoothness, that touted feature that everyone claims is pretty much iOS's big advantage, is pretty much gone for the 3GS. Even if it's brand new out of the box.

Yes, probably. Even when you compare an iphone 3gs and iphone 4/4s with both ios 5, there are many differences especially with their performance, they might have a few similarities with the features but many things have already changed.

My iphone 4 with ios 5 is still buttery smooth. I can't comment on the 3gs but the fact it was updated at all is impressive.

considering the processor limitations on the 3gs, its anything but impressive. that should tell you to expect small things from iOS6. Same ol same ol with a new GPS app... or worse they are sending just a smidge of iOS6 to the 3gs to say it has the update. We all know apple doesnt send full updates to older devices so people have to buy the new device to get all the features

I was have android base on doughnut version and it was already s**tty at eclaire. it just 1 version different. my device out 2010 and it has the same processor clockspeed with 3GS. my friends have 3GS and it still run game smoothly at ios 5 (better than playing game at samsung gs2). I think your 3GS trully s**tty hahahaha

I call BS to that 3 year old iPhone 3GS running a game smoother than a GS2.
Not only is it impossible, its a bad lie.

What the f.... are u talking about booy i own an iphone 3GS with iOS 5.1.1. and it flows like honey.
I know a lot of people who have 3GS-s and nobody complained.
So dont talk nonsence before you checked the facts.
Android jeloaous prick;)

I have an iPod touch 4th gen 64gb running 5.1.1 and it lags, forcecloses like crazy on curtain games too. My RAZR, and the DROID X before it would wipe the floor with this thing, unfortunately I'm stuck until the iPhone 5 comes out..... And NO I will not be updating my iPod Touch.

I guess, you must be JB your itouch. JB offered freedom but sacrifices stability.

Just a quick logic check on your analogy: "...flows like honey."
You are aware honey doesn't exactly 'flow' right?
19. iamcc (Posts: 1319; Member since: 07 Oct 2011)
It does actually. It's very similar to molasses... but yeah, I don't think that works for his analogy.
Well it does work... but he doesn't know it.

"Maybe it's because other manufacturers don't still sell phones that are going on 3 years old because they've moved on, and the customers with those 3 year old phones are usually looking to get new ones anyway."
not a lot of people update every two years, some people keep their phones until they no longer work.. I know you might be surprise as Android makers. well they don't last long.. but other phones with other OS's do last.. and regarding the upgrade.. remember how the upgrade to Gingerbread ruined the Droid X?... fandroids should just shut their mouths on this one. because ..please Android well we all know. upgrading is not one their strengths...

Or Probably they have loads of unsold 3GS stock and they can sell atleast some 3GS's by saying its got the Latest of the Apple software saying "The Very Oldest, Fastest and Most Powerful iPhone yet" now with iOS6...
Ok people... This is not the Place to Crowd at a time like this isilly's...
We don't have all day... Move on to Quad Cores...
16. Berzerk000 (Posts: 3643; Member since: 26 Jun 2011)
But the reason they don't update old devices to the newest software is because of the lag. I mean, if you put an Android device that's 3 years old, say the Moto Cliq, on ICS it would be unbearably laggy, and would probably just turn itself off. With iOS however, it's a different story. Because iOS is so simple, it can be run easily. The 3GS however, does not fit the requirements to even run iOS 5. iOS is just an app launcher, now with a notifications bar!

"...who don't want to update old devices so they could just get more money, which is really unfair to their customers..."
Apple and word 'fair' can't be used in one sentence.
Repairing the 'New' iPad sucks, almost everything keeps on hot glue or something like that... So good luck repairing, 'New' iPad if you want to replace battery. You think it is fair?
You can watch or download video from here and you will see:
Also remember antenna problems and what Apple told for customers... You think that it is fair?

I don't think Apple should update the 3GS to iOS 6. By the time iOS 6 rolls out the 3GS will be over 3 years old. By now most people have upgraded to a newer iPhone so there is no need to support it. Plus i'm sure the 3GS won't be able to run a lot of the new features in iOS 6 because of the outdated hardware.
7. biophone (Posts: 1884; Member since: 15 Jun 2011)
It would be nice if they did. Not everyone wants to spend 200 dollars on a new phone when they have a perfectly good one already.
11. mas11 (Posts: 1014; Member since: 30 Mar 2012)
Actually it's a waste of money not to upgrade. When you buy a phone on contract it's subsidized by your monthly bill. So even if you don't want to upgrade your phone you can buy a new iPhone 4S for $200 and sell it for at least $400. Plus if you sell your iPhone 3G on ebay the going rate is around $100 so that will help pay for your upgrade.
13. biophone (Posts: 1884; Member since: 15 Jun 2011)
Or you could just buy the iphone 4s sell that make a buck off of it and keep on using your perfectly fine 3gs. Also not everyone wants to deal with buying/selling on ebay.
21. mas11 (Posts: 1014; Member since: 30 Mar 2012)
There are places that will sell your phone on ebay for you, but you have to pay them a high commission. There are also websites willing to by your phone, but you will lose out on a lot of $.

i wonder if my htc hero would get ics. lol yeah in my dreams
25. remixfa (Posts: 13902; Member since: 19 Dec 2008)
the Hero doesnt have the hardware capability to run ICS even stripped down. it lacks the onboard memory.
what you should be thinking is "how small of an update is iOS6 that a nearly 4 year old phone can handle it"
When android sends out a major update.. its a major update. And they also only send it to devices that can handle 100% of the update.
When Apple sends out a major update, its a bigger "number" and maybe a new feature. But for the 3gs, its mostly going to be a bigger number. They will "update" and only send you half of the features.
Besides, the 3gs is still selling new as a freebie phone, of course they are gonna make people think that it has the new OS. Just another one of those apple half truths and lies.

Well guys let me just tell you one thing,i'm a happy apple customer who owns an iphone 3GS and an ipad 2 16gb wi-fi and my next phone is gonna be a nexus phone. WWWHHHYYY you ask. The 3GS has been the best phone that i ever had but i believe in choice. Why can't you have an apple and a google product. I like android because i'm a tech freak, but i also love apple and its beautifully designed products. My point is competition is awesome,if it wasn't for apple and the 1st iphone damn sure android wouldn't exist in this form either. From a healthy competition everybody wins a most importantly we the consumers.
